Last thread: >>2641739

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, do not respond to shitposts!

You forgot the cheeks. They extend much further out than the eyes, and you need to consider this when drawing the face from a top-down angle.
Even an anime face isn't flat.

sorry i made this confusing im not good at explaining, added alot of info on 1 sentence. I meant as the eyes should be more circular not consistent single line that can be broken down into 3 parts. Also the eye lid itself should be recolored to the iris color pic. related hope it helped the recolor part is your own style but this is what i see most of the time when i see moe artists they usually recolor the eye lid into a more lighter color usually the same color as the iris.

Ah, gotcha.

I'll keep it in mind but that's not something I'm even really considering right now. I'm still worried with constructing the eyes (their position, spacing, form of the curves and where they should point, shape of the iris, etc.) All the tutorials I've found so far have been garbo, essentially giving you a list of elements to put on the eye (which everyone can see lol) but not telling you how to place a pair on a face. So far I just draw 10-15 trash faces until I get one that looks decent through a fluke, but I'd like to understand better how they're made so I can sketch them naturally.

Maybe it's my face construction as a whole that's just terrible, though. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I do agree. Though in your sample the view is from below which gives an angle that causes the nose cartilage to block the eyes since the eyes are sitting at a socket.

The sketch on the other hand has an angle closer to a straight line so eyes sitting on a socket or the nose blocking the eyes wont be apparent as much.

I was stressed constructing perspective. maybe my unconscious mind made me apply perspective on speech boxes too. however I think they look blend. which is not good for dialog. and transforming text while keeping it readable was harder than expectation.

that perspective lines without actually any use at all... you're not working from solid fundies, you would have to remake everything witohut actually relying on it

to be honest, to work in a picture with that aproach you must be exceptionaly intuitive

we can see lot of pros aproaching painting like that, but you don't see how they think or the muscles behind doing it

you're not gonna progress too far going in like that, focus on one thing at a time if you plan to carry further that concept, and you might ask then for feedback on every step

that means 1. focus on the drawing, not the colors and values at the same time, you just make it harder
2. use one or few references for every single thing, that perspective shot, sea, city skyline, helicopter, etc

values of midground (city) are competing with foreground (dinosaur)
colorwise, it lacks unity and saturation variations, mind atmosperic perspective, it should tone down everything

atm ocean waves are like the dino is sized as a person, it should ge a gradient instead

let me teach you how to do it, even with 20 layers behind

first of all, select all, copy the combined image to make a new layer on top, liquify untill you fix it, don't liquify more than once till you get end results.

Why you may ask. Because photoshop saves your last filter properties, so you can apply the same effect on other layers later on.

You go to every layer and apply ctrl+F (the same liquify you did, will apply on these layers).

This is the way to liquify layered works, discovering this saved my life.

Explain these facial proportions. Comparing it to Loomis, the features are drawn much larger and the chin is raised high. I assume a large part of it is for a childlike baby face. You can have something that looks inhuman while being dressed. I'd just look at designs for "dark" or "evil" creatures and outfits, and see what kind of common design themes you can find. You've already made two design decisions, a color palette (black, gold and red) and a material combo (a mix of metals a cloth).

Think about shapes. Angles look more "evil", but curves are more pure and dignified. What about designs with "evil" curves? What makes them evil-looking? Are there any sorts of motifs or patterns you could incorporate in your design to make it more alien looking?

You have some good shapes. The hips and thighs look decent and you are using straights and curves which is nice. It's just that the figure as a whole feels disjointed - the pose is awkward and the rythms of the body just doesn't flow well, not to mention the escher shit going on with the supposedly foreshortened hand and the scabbard. I'm not feeling the sense of weight. I think it would be good for you to do gesture studies of sports action poses and martial arts to better understand how people stand and move.

Your understanding of form/perspective is in dire need of work. I recommend doing drawabox/Scott Robertson exercises.
The figure is a bit "fly swatted" where everything is viewed either straight on or in side view.

http://manlyspirit.deviantart.com/
http://manlyspirit.tumblr.com/

I got a lot of stuff in the pipeline, so expect a huge update in a couple weeks. I normally work on like 5-6 things at the same time.

>>2648728
Yeah, I agree with this train of though. I think I might make variations to it though, while keeping C as the standard.

>>2648923
Well, kinda. I am kinda following somewhat strict rules in designing the creature though.

Basically, it's for a monster-catching/raising game like Pokemon, except with a more competitive angle, and a more realistic art style (I'm not actually making the game, I just give myself little projects like this to work on, I did write up all the mechanics and stuff, so maybe some day...)

Anyway, it breaks down as such:

You have 20 different species, and you can combine two species. Hominids basically = bipedal and human-like. Hominids are a species that can't be unpaired actually. So anyway, Hominid + Fairy = Angels.

However, in addition, all Creatures fall into one of 8 Star signs, each star sign being either Yang (+) or Yin (-), for a total of 16 different types or Elements.

Saturn creatures are basically either Spirit (Yang) or Chaos (Yin). As a whole though, all Saturn creatures have high Resistance (S.Def), and Agility, but poor Luck. Saturn associates with the ritualistic, spiritual, mystical, and occult. They use somewhat underhanded tactics in combat to gain the upper hand, such as Instakill moves, life drain, or even the ability to "corrupt" foes to have them turn on their allies.

So basically, Hominid + Fairy with a (Yin) Saturn Attribute = Dark Angel. Hominid + Fairy with a Sol Attribute (Yin or Yang, mainly Yang though), would be a regular Angel.

>> No.2649211

>>2649206
cont:

I already have Demons too as a species, which would be more edgy and evil-looking. It's an entire species too, so I have plenty to work with there, especially if I combine it with other species. Demon + Hominid would be something more human-like in appearance, but still with that distinct demonic look. So like a Succubus and stuff would fit there.

A Dark Angel, I feel, is still an Angel. It's just dwelling with Darker and more Taboo elements. Like Black in MtG. It's also fallen to decadence and stuff. It's not longer pure and altruistic like a regular angel.

Oh yeah, I also didn't draw any of the refs I have for species in the last post. They're all strictly refs for monster ideas.

And if anyone wants to give creature design a go using these rules, I could better explain myself if you'd like. I'm also working on a Mystical Dragon with feathered wings that has a Sol Attribute.

>> No.2649212

>>2649206
>>2649211
Oh yeah, forgot to add. A Dark Angel isn't the only type of creature you can get by combining Hominid+Fairy with a Yin Saturn attribute. You can have pretty much anything that fits that criteria. A Dark Angel was just the first that came to mind for me.

I normally use real life models and people as ref for stylized characters. Pic related, all of them used a real person as ref/inspiration.

It often helps lay down that base for you to tweak and work with. It's also a lot of fun. People are interesting man. Everyone has certain unique shapes and forms to them, and it's quite fun to stylize and exaggerate certain features. If I don't use ref, my characters often come out a lot more generic. Using ref often helps give me that edge that really makes them stand out. Also, use real life ref for stylized characters, don't copy other anime or whatever. I often find that if my ref is from other stylized work, the characters wind up looking less unique and original.

Keep in mind that you're DESIGNING, not drawing. When designing, using ref is not "not a bad thing" but in fact absolutely imperative. If you were to just draw, or churn out some poses or whatever, then yeah, you don't really need ref. But if you're specifically designing a character, research and reference are two very critical steps man. The only exception being when you already have a very clear picture in your mind of what you want the character to look like. Or if you're working with a hyper stylized look that uses shapes rather than forms (Johnny Bravo, Dexter's lab, Old Disney cartoons, etc...). My two cents.

>> No.2649281

>>2649245
It's kind of a stylistic choice, I find flat faces and prominent chins appealing.

>>2649246
Yeah, although I have a severe case of same-face I often find it that I get more natural facial expressions when using reference.

I feel like the style I look up to the most really restricts me but I really like the way it looks, I hope that someday I can break the rules a bit but still make it look like that style.

you might want to do constructive lines like you did on her shoulder to suggest more forms more consistently everywhere, so it reads less as a shape
linework wise, you might want to push weight on some shapes to make them read before the shape that is behind, to push hand above forearm, hips above sword, and so on

it doesn't seem necesary, as rough as it is, it reads perfect already

Joining a Discord group and chatting with a bunch of people routinely means you will likely end up distracted by retarded social bullshit, so it's better to stay in threads of anonymous people and draw. If you find yourself craving contact that badly that you seek an internet community, go see a therapist and get some help (then find some friends in your real life).

That's my take on it, but that's largely colored by my own experience.

Your background lacks a horizon, which is why it looks terrible. Spend a day or two learning about one and two-point perspective, because the rest of your stuff is pretty decent.

Also, giving the bg its own lineart would help at this level. Keep in mind doing a full background is a lot of work, so if you neglect it it will come out looking bad. Setting your character in a "space" (i.e. sitting on a chair with a few objects around it making a composition) might be easier.

you're begginner tier, art is a rabbit hole with so many layers, you're at the second one, as you're not doing symbol drawing, but you're still a beginner, not so nenligent tho

if you want to take the art trip, check the sticky or beginner thread resources to start learning what art fundies are about, how to understand and practice them

you don't have to quit copying what you like, but if you really want to git gud to make your own stuff, you need to grind fundies and challenge yourself with personal work

you have patience and focus to spend on rendering, invest it on useful studies instead
www.drawabox.com
learn to draw form to stop thinking 2D shapes, this is your main priority to get better

3D can be made copying a photo which already resembles 3D or you can actually design 3D in 2D trought construction/form/perspective fundies

you need to grind the second approach (I myself started minding it 1 year and half ago thx to ic)
