Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

→ →
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>> No.2645192

>>2645167
The two main things you'll want to improve for ten minute sketches like this is efficiency, and anatomical knowledge. Even though your figure has relatively few lines (and thus elements), each line is still chickenscratched more than necessary. With experience, you'll be able to define a major body curves in 3-5 strong lines, rather than a dozen tiny overlapped lines that blend in. This gets easier to do with practice, and with knowledge of what anatomy actually fits in your figure. For example, having a complex understanding of the elements of the neck, torso, pelvis and butt/leg would allow you to make that long, flowy curve at the back much more dynamic, and have it describe complex anatomical structures rather than a simpler outline of the body.

In general, though, don't forget to keep working on 3d construction. Your right thigh is too long and doesn't seem to be connected to the pelvis, which I'm assuming is happening because you didn't picture the form of the whole leg, but only the bit you could see.

>> No.2645194

>>2645192
Forgot to add, but having more extensive anatomical knowledge will give you more "meat" to add onto your subject, so you won't stall having to rework the same curves in your 10 minute sketches because you're not sure what else to add. This'll help you practice line efficiency too.

Don't forget you need good bases in construction and 3d visualization to do this.

Yup it's definitely matching the ref more, the lack of polishing is making it difficult to focus.

The main shapes are much better than before, there's just slight flashing around the cheek to our right, it's not matching perfectly.
I think I also see flashing on the bottom lip, but honestly I find it really hard to focus because it's 5am here and I'm extremely tired.

I can focus perfectly on the eyes and pupils though, very good! Less so around them, but it's because polish.

I'll go to sleep now, tomorrow maybe I will be able to point out some more flashing contours and shapes, I'm just too tired to do it properly right now, I'll just collapse in bed in a few minutes.

Keep it up, I really like it and want to see how it goes!

The eyes are balls covered by the eyelids, you drew them as outlines.

If that's a widow's peak it starts only slightly under the hairline, probably at 1/3rd of how far you actually drew it.

You're spending way too much time detailing individual muscles when you should be putting more work in learning gesture, simpler muscle groups, and making quicker sketches that have good flow before you start putting on the detail.

Yes, because you probably don't have the self control to not erase, and it's far too easy to adjust line weight with a pencil. It also puts you in a sketching mindset.

Using a pen means every line is permanent, so as you keep practising you'll slowly see the improvements from your first exercises to the next.

There's a difference between drawing all your life, and learning to draw all your life.

The main issue I see is you've not done any basic construction - you've got no underlying forms to build up from.

Study construction for a while, and don't focus on shading/values just yet.

And when cross hatching, try to keep it neat and uniform, while following the form of what you're shading - otherwise it can end up looking flat.

charcoal pencils aren't really that necessary, unless you really want to explore that medium. make sure you get a good quality eraser, both regular and kneaded one. also you might want to buy some sand paper if you sharpen your pencils with a knife - helps sharpen the lead into a perfectly sharp end, better than a regular sharpener, at least for me!

clearly you don't know the basics. you have to measure what you are doing and check the directions when "building" the head. you have done none of that here and that's why there is no construction.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE why the fuck does everyone just lightly smudge on charcoal and it softens for days, but I have to press hard as fuck and it barely smudges 1mm if that?

Is it the paper? The charcoal quality? I'm using Printer paper and no matter what charcoal I use, 6B pencil, hard pencil, big stick, small stick, it all smudges about the same, which is basically nothing.

Also whenever I do a stroke with a stick only one or two sharp lines come out, yet I pressed it a lot on a piece of paper and it looked flat - do I have to grind the stick for a long time? Is paper good enough?

With extreme angles, think of the head as a box in perspective. If you divide your face into thirds and give it a vanishing point (as in this picture), you can gauge approximately how much chin, nose and forehead you should be seeing as well as figure out where to place landmark features.

Ghost your lines before you trace them.
Read Figure Drawing for all its worth.
Don't worry about drawing from imagination just yet.

Ghosting means to go through the motion as if you were drawing without actually touching the paper, once you get the motion down you actually throw one line, remember to use your entire arm and not just you wrist. With a little practice you should be making good lines,

That's always the problem, knowing something is wrong but not knowing how to fix it.

Basically, your judgement of proportion and shapes is not up to par. But you don't just read a book and instantly know how to see better.

Seeing better comes from looking at the same problem over and over and gradually building up your knowledge and abilities.

The only answer is constant, painstaking studying day in and day out.

Now I will say that perhaps you can make it easier on yourself by taking a step back and studying basic shapes and forms.

For example, as a beginner you'd have an easier (but still difficult) time learning to draw cubes in perspective compared to say... a complex engine.

You could of course start out with the complex engine, but you will progress much more slowly than if you had broken it down into simple shapes and understood the pieces before you tried to understand the whole.

And the human face, the skull, and everything that makes it work, is pretty much a complex engine. It is debateably the hardest part of the human body to become competent at. For most, it takes years.

The good news is that, as long as you make mistakes and make a concentrated effort to figure out what those mistakes are, the more you can learn what not to do. And the more you learn what not to do, the closer you are to getting on the correct path. Part of it is knowledge, and part of it is technical skill. But you have to be able to see your own mistakes. You wont start seeing them as readily if you don't compare, and you wont be able to compare if you only do one drawing a day. The number of studies you can do in a day will increase over time.

In every field of every profession be them creative or not, every beginner starts out only being able to do a little at a time. So it's best to use that little you have available to you in the most efficient manner.

Think about where and in what direction the bicep is placed, the muscles in the forearm should be placed relative to the bicep and the rotation of the hand

Also the entire butt region is fucked, i cant tell where to torso ended, or where the legs begin, women in particular have larger hips and therefore have a larger gap in the crotch area.

One more thing, when practicing, dont stylize anything. manga/ anime is terrible for learning, because all of the instructional videos and books are anatomically wrong. Anime limbs are meant to be longer, and all of the characters are abnormally thin. If you are trying to learn anatomy my favorite book is called "an atlas of anatomy for artists"

It's called muscle memory. They take a long time to build the correct synapses, so your art will be inconsistent in the mean time until your muscles gain strong enough of a control. This is what it means to git gud and can only be gained by drawing a lot. Consistency comes from discipline. So don't sweat it so much, every beginner goes through it and therefore everyone has bad weeks. As long as you power through it and don't give up, your muscles should continue to grow and stabilize.

Op here. I think the main thing is it is hard for me to stick to doing something every day. For example, these "Gestures" were from the last week of July. I said I was going to do at least 30 mins of gestures a day. I did two days before I stopped for no real reason. Over the past few years I have noticed I've become incredibly inconsistent in many things. One day I feel like I have the spark and the next it is like I am in a black hole.

>> No.2646877

>>2646872
>I think the main thing is it is hard for me to stick to doing something every day
It is for a lot of people. It's called making habits.

Anyways, the thing is that you haven't quit, so you can still start and continue that routine. As long as you haven't stopped drawing forever, you haven't quit. People need a break every now and then and that's okay.

>> No.2646879

>>2646872
Gestures take a lot of thought though.
30 minutes a day doesn't seem like it would even scratch the intricacies of gestures. I doubt it'd be proficient enough to give any sort of mastery over such an important thing.

I don't think you should allow inconsistency to get to you in the first place. I used to be like you, but I designated a time (6:30) and I've been drawing 1 hour of gesture/boring study every day.

I've been getting progressively better.

You should always do an hour a day. If you don't feel like it, do 20 minutes and quit. The important thing is you started, and you'll follow through the next day.

>> No.2646889

I'm no pro, but I am a beginner who does bad gestures just like you.

I think you should read this Micheal Hampton figure drawing book if you haven't already and focus on the figure drawing section:

https://mangodrawingsatuni.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/michael-hampton-figure-drawing-design-and-invention.pdf

Then go download this Vilppu torrent and watch it with the knowledge of the Michael Hampton book. Pay special attention the river/water pressure scene and consecutive drawing where Vilppu goes from a flat drawing to a figure drawing.

I advise you to draw both of those things.

That's what I did, and I had a major break through in drawing gesture. I hope to save you the time I wasted.

First traditional, first charcoal, ~8 months of digital deliveries for drawthreads

Unless you count literal straight strokes on a piece of paper to get used to some pressure with a stick as the first drawing, then sure, it's the second.

I started on digital with a tablet, from scratch, pretty idiotic move in hindsight but I got into drawing because of the technology in the first place, then I started to appreciate the craft after.

Now that my blog is written and the accusations were thrown, let's hopefully get some critiques

Here's the ref so Timmy here realizes I'm not worth throwing a fit over.

I think I'll focus on traditional to hopefully fix the shit measuring, that should help me since it's more limiting, I think, unless that only works in DBZ.

I think your main issue is that you're paying too much attention to the contour of the figure. You're putting down lines (like those in the middle of the thigh) without really knowing *why* they're there. That's why it's a good idea to learn construction, so that you can use the figure as a reference, rather than just blindly trying to copy what's there.

I wanted to try sketching the figure myself, so I made some notes for you that you should take with a lotta salt, but hopefully it'll point you in the right direction. Keep it up anon!

Looks really good, are you planning on leaving is in a "brushed" style or give the skin and clothes realistic textures?

It's just missing a bit of refining in the ear, slight lightening/shading adjustments and an angle is slighty off, it doesn't feel as "3D" as the rest of the face. The rest seems OK and looks overall perfect.

Keep it up and in a few more updates I'll be able to cross-eye ref and drawing without any flashing :)

Charcoal tends to be much messier than graphite. It makes it easier to blend but easier to fuck up too, and it takes much less effort to get darker darks in charcoal. I've heard a lot of people say charcoal is faster to work with but it really comes down to how an individual works. I personally prefer charcoal just because i like working with broader, messier strokes but for the most part if you can do something with one you can do it with the other. kneaded erasers are really good for erasing really small bits and clearing off big chunks as well, if you mess up on shading (granted if you didn't just ram the graphite into the paper while shading). it can also help you pick up the dust from the lead if needed! generally it's much more flexible than a regular eraser; you should be able to find one in any art supply shop, they come in small square chunks, usually grey or blue. just make sure you do not leave it open and on your work, it's known to react in really weird ways with paper sometimes.
hope this helps at all!

You should be using a harder brush to keep the edges clean, you don't want a soft mushy appearance.

There is also too much variation within each plane, basically each one should be one flat tone throughout. A value change means a plane change. So the bit of reflected light you put on the far right side looks almost like it has a beveled edge or something. Also the value of the shadow side is too dark.

I think you should first do some studies from photos or life of simple objects rather than trying to invent them because you are making many basic errors without realizing it.

>> No.2647433

>>2647418

The reason yours looks bad is:

- You don't have good control over your lines yet, eg. you can't properly draw circles, ovals and curves

- You're not following and visualizing the form of the ball. Look at the line connecting the eyes. In his examples it is curving around the ball, yours is straight horizontal

Don't worry, this is completely normal and expected if you just started drawing! You just need to train line control and drawing/visualizing simple 3d forms in perspective.

Try drawabox.com, it will be very hard at first but if you keep at it you will improve surprisingly fast

For accuracy, Keys to Drawing has a section that talks about proportions and how you can eye it with your pencil and that will help you place things correctly as well as fit it on A5 paper.

I tried.

What can I do to stop being scared of drawing bodies? Whenever I draw something that is not a face, my brain hangs up and I fuck everything

You need to brute force it if you don't have the willpower or self control to Just Do It™

Try some gesture drawing.
It's the first step in learning how to draw people.

Actually, on second thought I see you can't observe correctly.

Your angles are wrong.
You're not looking the negative space.
Look at the angle of your nose, and the angle of the reference.

Your lips are symbols. There is a significant dip in the top lip that isn't even there in your drawing.

You need to check out keys to drawing or one of those books that teach you how to really look at a reference before you worry about drawing bodies.

You also need to think in 3D before you attempt to do gestures. So, if you haven't already, do draw-a-box.

When you're doing draw-a-box, it's not something you just blow through so keep that in mind. Do every exercise for at least an hour.

Be sure to measure angles.
That fucked up nose can easily be remedied by holding a pencil up to the screen and estimating the angle on the ref. Lock your arm, hold a pencil vertically to a point on that line, estimate the angle, and redraw that angle in your drawing.

You did a good job with the face shading. It's mostly the mustache that looks weird.
