Whoa chill man. Generally it feels a bit insulting to say that an artist just has "talent." There were years of hard work that went into getting this "talent." When someone compliments you that way, it almost feels like a backhanded compliment. Most of the time, artists will understand that the person is trying to be nice and just take the compliment. That doesn't make it any less annoying though.

The artists that I've noticed trying to defend the use of "talent" (you) generally don't have the skills to be called talented in the first place. I suppose you may know the feeling in a couple years when you git gud. Sry m8

This is such a cringe-worthy response. You basically turn something that's a compliment (you're so talented, anon!) into a self-righteous tirade about what a hard worker you are, even though they never implied you didn't practice. If you were smart/remotely socially competent you'd realize "talent" means you basically have mysterious powers that normies will admire you for. Then when you tell normies what kind of hours you're putting on they'll be blown away that you have both talent and discipline, another mysterious power.

Honestly some artists are just too fucked in the head to stop their anxieties about life seeping into art (and/or other things). So critical thinking becomes unnecessarily critical, not "fishing for compliments". However, that fishing thing does happen a lot with teenagers & younger artists just starting out. Hopefully most will be able to grow out of it when they are more mature.

Case-to-case of course, but if the overly self-critical thing still happens many years into an artist's career, it is probably a mental health thing. Trying to tell these types of artists to stop that shit (no matter how nice or harsh) will cause an opposite effect. It's something they just have to get over on their own. It can never happen in some cases due to whomever being too stuck in their mental state, either from a lack of trying or not getting the right kind of help, which is a shame.

I think a lot of comments are made with good intentions ("You're so talented!" for example). I really can't think of a good intention for people trying to get free art, though, so that's the one that annoys me. From my experience, it's never been friends who have tried to get free art, either. It's always some random person you added on Facebook or that broke family member you rarely talk to anyway or like your friend's roommate or something. People I don't even have a personal obligation to thinking they're worth taking time away from a paying gig basically.

I can appreciate a good trade offer, though. I drew an acquaintance's girlfriend for him, and in exchange, he took my graduation photos (and they actually turned out really great, too).

Joking aside, people that aren't artists don't understand that we artists sketch all the time and showing them an unfinished or unpresentable sketch is just asking to be insulted because they have no idea what fundamentals to pick apart. Most of them also have no appreciation for fine art as well so they won't understand something out there. You should only be looking to other artists for advice, but ultimately your own eye is the best critic because no one will be as harsh as you on yourself. Or you can just keep getting normies to shout "draw me!" at you. (Charge for your work btw)

To a lot of people "talented" begins and ends at "wow he's good at that."
It doesn't have this stupid fucking connotation about being a natural born artist who didn't practice a day in his life.
