Somebody posted these on FB. I guess it's from one of Ruan's workshops and he's using his works for explaining stuff. I wonder why he doesn't post these on his site or blog, since he has no problem with showing these on a stream? His work is insane, the greys, the soft edges and his incredible sense of scale is great. I think it's the softness and greys that really sell the realism so much. Really love Rapozas applibot stuff but set it side by side and it's crazy how much more realistic Jia's stuff is.

I'm always in awe at how good he is in oils too. I really wish he did more, or tried to do a big illustration in oils (even one based on a digital painting of his).

I would guess he does (or at least used to do) a lot more oils and traditional stuff than he's showing. I remember in some interview he said that practicing traditional art is very imortant in getting better, meaning you shouldn't rely on digital shortcuts too much. Seems like an obvious advice, but it feels legit after seeing his earlier works >>2637795 >>2637796 >>2637797 which are crap and looking digital as fuck.

Yeah I remember he once posted a photo of a stack of sketchbooks, and that was just ones that he had filled drawing people on the bus on the way to and from work.
