The second set of pecs should end at this things xiphoid process as well, the abdominal and sternal portion would have an extremely short range of motion if this is how you're going to keep it, probably affecting him being able to draw the shield towards his body.

Clouds will usually have the softest and most "lost" edges on an image. Also their shadows are too dark in value here. Given the plume's distance, it'll be higher in value, slightly bluer, and be "cooler" in the base shadow, while the top of the shodow will be warmer by comparison due to it being in front of the sky.

Confirm your perspective and vp's. Good start.

>Palette Knife (it's a really flat ellipse with angle set to pen tilt)
>Round Brush (the default lol)
>Leaf Brush (make a leaf shape, mess with the scattering and jitter)
>Dirt Brush (draw particles with a round brush that has scatter+jitter, turn that into a brush tip, then add scatter and jitter to that brush tip)
>Scratches (a dirt brush tip - just a few points - that has very tight spacing, angle variance - set it to direction or pen tilt - and no randomness

I also used 1 or 2 textured brushes from random brush packs as well as Shaddy Safadi's "one-sided" brush (one side has more edge than the other) to paint some of the creases in the rocks. Look up Shaddy Safadi brushes to get a free download as well as full explanation on all of those.

Honestly though, I'd really recommend looking up a tutorial on how to create your own PS brushes or tweak PS brush settings. 80% of the style in this picture is due to the palette knife but to use custom brushes to their full potential you gotta know how to tweak them and adjust them to your needs imo.

Be careful with how you shade/render the area between the front and hind right legs, there's some amount of foreshortening between the two but it's hard to detect in your shading right now.

It makes the two legs look silly close together on the same plane instead of putting them in a good spacial relationship.

The cape wouldn't extend that far on your foreshortened arm. It barely drops to mid-shoulder on the other arm (something the relative lack of folds on the left arm seems to confirm). But the way you drew it, on the arm that's extended it ends roughly at the middle of the forearm.

I'm by no means proficient at anatomy but you definitely want to check these arms without the clothes, and figure out exactly where your elbow is because it will help place things and figure if your perspective is fucked or not.

You have a really nice use of chromatic grays in these. I love how they're used to unify warm and cold tones, especially on the pitcher and in the flowers. The whole thing looks really moody.

>>2627742
The clouds and mountains are too detailed compared to the centaur, so the eye goes all over the piece instead of focusing in whichever you want to focus. The clouds are more polished than the snow the character is standing on, this makes no sense perspective-wise

Same with the use of white, the eye rests on what's white but the mountains and clouds to the left are as white as the character. The light doesn't correlate either, the helmet is in front of the light but the chest isn't? Why are both the character's back and the front of the hand and face shiny? What's up with the shield? The light isn't coming from a single source

I mean the technical skill is very impressive but you need to know where you want to guide people's eyes and train your composition. It's just a centaur standing there hogging most of the canvas in a boring posture, tense for no apparent reason, when there's all this interesting stuff in the background far far behind

My 2 cents

You're right, definitely not my best. I was having a lot of trouble with this one, but that's okay because you don't learn without mistakes.

Symbolism isn't obvious without introduction, but that's a whole another story. It also requires understanding the current situation of nordic countries, which is why I won't even try explaining it. Good point also with gradients, I've never thought about it.

This one I was retouching, adding some correct values on the field and rendering flowers from start again. Fun to see that it works quite well, even though it has been a week between sessions. Only thing is that scanning might not be the best option for making it digital.

As another anon has said reflection is fucked, I don't even understand why desu. If it changes compared to the source, it's supposed to indicate a change in the object's topology, which there shouldn't be here.

One thing that might help you with gloss/semi-gloss surfaces is a proper understanding of the fresnel effect (pic related). I don't really see it on surfaces like the teapot's cap which displays a really clear fresnel reflection in your ref, while it seems like you shaded it more with random speculars.

Anyway, if you're trying to improve your rendering look up Scott Robertson's "How to Render", it pretty much covers everything on metallic and reflective surfaces. And yes, studying it properly will let you "invent" details (by which I assume you mean create realistic gloss materials without needing a direct ref).

Honestly, one way to get it for sure is to plan out a box in perspective with reference points (to position your elbow and figure out how big everything is).

Given the rather extreme foreshortening (left hand is 3-4x bigger than the right) and the fact that she's not very muscular, you'd probably see the forearm/wrist get bigger too, not just the hand.

I think it's easier to start by learning basic planes and relationships (look up an art book on drawing the head). The most common mistakes I see beginners make is draw every surface with the same attention, instead of working from big to small (and instead of trying to remember 20-30 small planes autistically you'll be able to build those relationships through logic).

You put your subject in the right of the frame yet you have her looking distinctly at the right, out of frame. At the same time you show all this space at the left which is entirely devoid of purpose. You generally want to give your figures some "breathing space", leave a decent amount of room in front of them (more than in the back at least), else the framing feels cut off.

I would say you can either flip your figure, or change the angle of her head/shoulders (which could be interesting, having a composition where the body is turning off-frame but the gaze is directed at the viewer).

>> No.2630123

Your character is lit with a light coming from the top/slight front. Since it's lit that way, it is impossible for something else above him to be casting a shadow in that location.

If I understand correctly what you're going for, this character is facing off against some kind of giant or machine we're seeing from the POV of, and which is casting a shadow on him/her, right? The problem is that with a light angle this high, the shadows are not gonna be very tall, and mostly fall directly under what's casting them. If you wanna keep that shadow play, you'll have to relight your character from the front (while shadowing the proper areas that are obscured by the cast shadow of the monster thingy).

1. Your line quality is nice, though you could still push it further if you so choose
2. Keep working on your hatching. Try doing some stuff in pen and looking at comic artists inked pieces. It's the main thing that's detracting from the piece.
3. The bottom part of the shield is messing with my brain. I have no idea what part is touching the ground. Having some sort of indication of a ground plane will help tremendously.
4. Play with your values. Having different values on say, the crest or the loincloth. Make those a whole value step lower or two than the armor. Or visa versa.
5. Fix that background bro. I know what you're trying to do and if you're going to attempt something like that, better make sure it's clean.

the characters do not fit in with the environment, everything looks like a cardboard cutout. You need to work on your color composition and lighting. There are things with highlights that would be blocked from the light. There are too many overly-defined details on irrelevant things in the background.

The copy-pasted mugs extremely are unflattering.

The body language and expressions of the characters are nice, though.

I like bottom right because his proportions make him look slightly gaunt whereas the others look strong with the broader silhouettes below the waist.

This is coming from someone that loves the design of the Dancer of the Boreal valley so I'm not too interested in the realism of the design but the old, rusted and cursed parts. You could easily fade to black and darken the bottom right one in a similar manner to the Dota2 / TF2 concepts and just have a simple strong read.

Really great thumbnail. I think it can use more polish and it'd be a great portfolio piece.

I'm not wild about the shield design especially with how flat it looks (not just the painting of it but the design). There's small things hat could be helpful like the tree just behind the shield is so perfectly straight and cuts the volcano smoke in half and is planted directly center of the shield creating a weird tangent.

Don't forget the spear cast shadow wherever it would be located.

You mean paint them like metal? or like he's wearing them? his helmet is supposed to be a part of his head and same with his gear.
