It looks good, but it's hard to judge how close a likeness it is without seeing the model. It seems suspiciously lacking in erased sections, which makes me think you aren't correcting errors much. My old life-drawing instructor used to say that if you didn't have to patch the paper up by the end, you weren't looking for errors hard enough.

Mostly, I think you are doing something which is below your level of skill; drawing from a very easy angle, no background, simple clothing, no body and limbs. Looking at the quality of your line-work, I think you can take on tougher challenges.

Also, tell >>2617726 how to do hair, because you seem to have got it.

OK, it's not a bad likeness, but the photo has a degree of form which isn't visible in your drawing. You need to be more aggressive about defining the structure. Look at how flat the front of the shoulder and the area of face at the front of the cheek are in your drawing compared to the photo. Really make areas like that stand out as much as the 'landmarks' like the nose, eyes and ears. You aren't 'symbol drawing', but you're doing something similar; looking at the features which you expect to be there, not the unexpected shapes.

Try drawing pictures of people from weird angles, or just body parts. Draw a bunch of shoulder, or elbows, or necks. Black out the facial features and concentrate on drawing cheeks and jaws. Anything to get out of the habit of looking at a person and having your brain pull up all the specialised 'looking at people' shit which stops us seeing each other as a mass of shapes.

The way I tend to do it is start of with a neutral grey, then work up and down from there. Usually I block in roughly with 75% white and 25% white, then blend and define from there.

If I started with a drawing like that, I'd probably set a desaturated version of the drawing as a multiply layer over a mid-range grey to do the basic shadows, then re-do the lines which wouldn't be in shadow (i.e. the outline of the face) in white, plus a few highlights before refining it into a more coherent mass. Using white lines as much as dark ones is a major part of moving from drawing to painting.

yup i drew that. that ones good too, idk whats not to like. it's more concept art. it's too referential to be a pun.

usually puns are just really literal combinations of two objects. there's no real connection between the two objects other than they happen to be in a phrase together.

"Camel" isn't a pun. a camel with pyramids for humps is referential to the area they live in, not the word itself, so it's more a concept and not a play on words.

didnt mean to rant, puns just usually suck and when i do them its on purpose. and i try not to make puns unless it's something really really stupid, or it's a play on multiple phrases and words and not just something really simple. pic related is one thats ackchooaly a stupid pun i painted (bloody stool)

I'd say in the hierarchy of difficulty when making concepts it's

>pun
>concept
>pun with multiple meanings
>multiple concepts that fit a theme in a single illustration

You render with a lot of energy. You just go for it, I like that. But there are some things you overlooked. The lighting is unclear, ambiguous. First of all, the overall head shape is wrong. The model has a boxy, masculine jaw and skull which you turned into a roundish more boyish appearance. The facial mass takes up too much space (not enough skull) and tilts forward. Individual features are off aswell. You need to spend more time on the block in and get the angles and proportions right before adding features.

you're trying to show too much. look at how you've drawn his torso and think about how much of it we should be able to see from this angle. we're looking at him from close to a 3/4 angle, yet we can see where the external obliques attach to the serratus muscles. his right leg looks like its in profile view, yet we see almost the entire pocket.

one of the many advantages of drilling basic form practice is that you gain a better sense of how forms occlude each other.

The results might not be perfect, but I think your process is good. You are clearly working quickly, confidently and looking at the shapes, not the symbols. Although the last image is probably the one most normies would call the best, it's the one which you probably learned least from in my opinion.

Basically, don't get hung up on getting the anatomy 'right' over drawing what you see. Better to do a clumsy rendition of what is actually there than a perfect one of what you think should be there. Practise frequently with the same approach you are using now and you should see steady improvement.

Tried to put good effort in figured drawing. The reference is in the reference threads for those who needs.
I messed up at the position of the hands, probably because the angle of one arm isn't right.
I'm happy with it, but not so much, mainly be cause of the hands, foot and head. These are the ones I did with less interest.
But I had a lot of fun with the back and the butt

right arm values are the same from top to bottom, that doesn't help to make it pop out
you can make the foreshortening read better by edge control, contrast soft against clean edges
you should also start drawing forms trying to contourn the form with lines, scratch more

also think of of core shadow, your darker values fill with the same intensity all the shadow parts, it even mesh the figure silouette with the background, you must avoid that

Unsure if this should go in a beginner thread or what, but I really want critique on my proportions. Something I struggle really hard with in my art is focusing on one place instead of the whole drawing, so when you zoom out it looks off or weird. How do I fix? It really bothers me that when I attempt to draw faces, most of the time they don't really look like the original picture. Also any suggestions as I finish the drawing would be nice as well.

This was my first completed character design, and i'm pretty desperate for critique, hence me coming here.
My usual forums are dead, and my teacher is busy.
Im already working on a new design for a different character, but i'd still like to hear where I might have gone wrong with this one.
Lemme paste the design document

"The goals for the design were to create a dark-skinned girl who looked beautiful and powerful, used the power of her own "inner flame" adapted to a fighting style focusing on fists and grapples, and was confident and sporty.
The colors intended for this design, following the uniform she and her "unit" wear, were Navy Blue, Black, Purple as a secondary, and a brighter blue/teal as a highlight/tertiary color.
The client gave me references for the general style of the artwork he wanted as well as the design of the clothing."

How'd I do gu/ic/e?

>> No.2623036

I don't know if or how much is the actual quality of the draw tied to the quality of the design, like making a good design, but poorly drawn, or vice versa (I guess not much, since you can make a design with just silhouettes). But from what I heard of design cinema's videos, a designer doesn't draw, a designer solves problems for the client they are working for, in the form of designs. So, in this case, the problem would be literally the description, and the solution, the char design. (don't quote me on that tho, Ima a noob). So, as far as the design goes, one thing I can say, is that you failed on the "adapted to a fighting style focusing on fists and grapples" because from the pic (which btw, I think when you're making a design of something, you never do just one), she doesn't appear to know any form of martial arts, by just looking at her; so the pose may be a good place to start.

For that one, I guess a good starting point would be researching swordsmanship techniques, first, decided which influence you like the most (England, Nordi, Japanese), then search about the techniques they use, find some draws or pictures, and try to apply the ones you feel meet the criteria. As it is now, it gives me the feel that he's just standing there with 2 swords, nothing more.

Heh, best I can find for Dual Swordsmanship is literally just a guy holding two swords...
Which I guess stems from how impractical it would be, but Dual wielding is a staple for the design.
Guess I gotta get creative. Maybe look up some vidya games from reference.
Anyways, thanks for the input.

I believe there are a few fencing masters in the west who taught the use of two swords (called a "case of swords" or a "case of rapiers") as well
Oh, and the Chinese like two-sword styles too - hook swords are supposed to be sued together, and I think there might be some styles that use twin daos.

Hope some of this might lead to inspiration.
