Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

To frustated beginners of any style:

http://artists.pixelovely.com/

Go to practice tools> Your desired real life subjects: and I recommend to take those classes to get into the mood of drawing gesture, action, flow lines, then advance slowly into longer sessions. Feel free to draw as big or as small into the page as you want, and fill out pages and pages. This will get you into the mood of drawing with flow and good poses.

i have a few questions about this. for the middle, im doing a straight copy of the ref on top, HOWEVER, i was going for somewhat of a vector paint, i know i pushed a bit of detail but as is, did i sort of hit it? im going to push more detail and finish it obviously.

for the bottom, where im mostly interested im trying something new. basically im taking a landscape and changing the lighting/season using the ref as a template. basically itll testing my ability to use color/light correctly without have to worry about the drawing aspect. so its like an intermediarry between a landscape study from a ref and landscape from imagination. is this an idea worth exploring? also, hows the bottom coming?

I think you need less detail lines, and focus on conveying the figure with one or two lines, first. forget the details and weird shapes/curves and do quick, smooth strokes. it helps holding the pencil farther from the tip and moving the whole forearm.

So, I have a question for my fellow beginners, regarding the critique you may receive, and my regarding my own experience. Throughout my attempt in getting good at art, I've shared my stuff with friends so they can call it shit and point out flaws. However, recently, I've gotten to the point where the only way they can find flaws is by nit-picking personal preferences. But, when I try to defend myself, they come back with replies like "oh nice muh style arguement" or "you don't have to be an artist to critique art". Has anyone else encountered this before? Like, I'm not great, and I'm certainly still an amatuer, but has anyone ever gotten to a point where minor mechanical skill errors are the majority of errors, and normies aren't able to just fling shit and claim it's criticism?

Eyes stand out as an issue. Work on your lines a bit - it looks like you draw each of them four times which gives it a scratchy feeling. Also in some areas (maybe ones you're not comfortable with?) it's clear you've pressed harder/gone over a few extra times and it seems really out of place (eyes/nose). You shaded the edge of the nose as a tactic to make it actually look like a nose, but because of that you've lost the depth in the rest of the drawing and it looks flat and unfinished (esp. neck). I like the sweater though, it's far more organic looking than the rest.

>>2615390
Not sure what you were aiming for with this so I'll give a general critique. The thumbnail reads pretty well, but upon zooming in the lack of symmetry in the smaller white vase-thing and the buck becomes more evident. Not sure exactly what the purpose of the vase is, but if it's to be filled from the bigger brassy thing then it's a bit tall to fill without tilting which doesn't make a lot of sense (a perspective/scale issue, or just an honest mistake?). The bucket looks unfinished, and the grayish blobs don't add much (same with the bigger thing), imo I find them distracting, but they also tie the subject into the background so maybe it's a matter of taste. The only part where it's a real problem is on the inside of the bucket, where you lose the edge you had going. I particularly like the bigger thing - most of your strokes convey the contours of the object nicely. Also not sure why there's a random orange stroke. One thing I'd recommend is some harder edges. Not all of them need to be hard, but it looks a bit like you added a blur after you finished.

Bug eyes, for real. If you look at the ref her eyes don't exactly follow 'correct' proportions - the spacing between them is not the length of one eye, yet you made it so.

Also, I know her hair is behind a headband but try to seperate hair into sizable masses of form and then put in highlights instead of stroking them like you do now. It'll look much more natural.

first off, be very grateful youre getting the help youre getting right now considering you didnt do us the courteousy of a properly sizing your pic. for now on open it in paint and resize making sure the LONGEST dimension is under 1000 pixels.

that said, you need to learn proper construction, learn to measure for now, and pay closer attention to details. the construction is fucked in that you literally didnt give her a chin. i did an overlay and your head/hair/jaw lines are perfect but where you have the features place you literally didnt give a chin because everything is shifted down. starting with her fuckng ayy lmao eyes that take up a fuckton more space than they should which brings me to symbol drawing.

you just drawing what you think is a correct nose, and not her nose, for example. you flared her nostrisl out way more than they should be and made it way wider than it should be. see pic for shit to look for.

all in all if you tried to say this was an animu you did from imagination i would actually say its decent. and its not half bad if you were just eyeballing it

That's why you post your work here, where people can tell you what you're doing wrong because they know how to do it right. It's hard to learn anything alone.

I'm not sure if this is a 'muh style' kind of image, but you've lost the likeness of the original. The shape of the face is really off, like some other anon said it's lopsided. It's okay to give your image the 'turned' look, but that means the ear (viewer's left) should also come forward. It's obvious that the face was your main concern, but those scratchy black lines in the hair and the sweater are ugly and really take away from your piece. It looks unfinished and rushed.

I'd recommend spending more time on making an accurate underdrawing before you paint. Also try some line exercises

.>>2615481
The folds on the lower parts of her vest-thing (sorry anon, I don't know clothing terms) read well enough. The ones around the breasts are the main issue, the (viewer's) left breast doesn't even look like a breast. Speaking as an avid viewer of breasts, most materials aren't that loose around them. Try adding a darker colour in the folds to add depth, and have a look at some cloth/drapery references.

>>2615572
This looks alright anon. In the ref the jaw line is less round though. the (viewer's) right eyebrow seems a little high too.

However, two things: the way you've drawn her neck messes up the position; it looks uncomfortable to copy and you would not normally be tilting your head forward whilst sticking out your ribcage like that. Look at pic related and compare.

Firstly, welcome. Secondly, please resize your images in the future. 1000px on the longest side max, it makes viewing easier and for those of us with shit internet, takes far less time to load.

Keys to Drawing is a good book to start with, or Sculptor's Guide to Anatomy. Loomis' books are also a nice introduction.

>>2616331
What the other anon said. If you're serious, start with something serious and do stuff that you like (this?) on the side. You can still enjoy yourself and get good. Also, maybe up the contrast before you post next time, feel like I have to squint to get an idea of what's going on.

>>2616355
Anything you can make a mark with to start is fine. Copy stuff from anywhere - mug on your desk, lamp, plants from outside, bricks, whatever. Read some beginner's books on the side - keys to drawing and sculptor's guide to anatomy is good. So is Loomis. Have a gander at the book thread and come back if you can't work out where to start.

>>2616468
Pls rotate and resize. If you're the landscape guy that I annotated before you've already made some nice improvements. On the viewer's left side of the image, your drawing is more curved than the ref and it squishes some of the other details. The hills are too plain though, even just shading them in would look a bit better. If you intend to copy the trees draw in the skeletal ones first (lower centre of ref) and work outwards. Keep at it anon.

I think the upper left sketch is the most successful one of the bunch. It looks as if it's drawn with a greater sensitivity than the rest. It has a nice gesture and isn't too harsh and angular. Don't get me wrong, I like to draw in a angular style too but you need to do it with a light touch. Overall your drawings have a very stiff appearance and some of the shading work looks a bit feeble and lacks purpose. But all those problems are self correcting as you gain more pencil mileage.

You're welcome, I think doing some Peter Han/Vilppu/Scott Robertson fundamental practice would be really beneficial to gain more confidence in drawing shapes in general and to loosen up a bit. Also this might sound weird but I've actually found it helpful to just look at good drawings every day. Constantly remind yourself what you're aiming towards and try to see whenever you are able to catch a glimpse of that in your own work. I printed out some copies of the rough gestures from "How to draw the Marvel way" and had them stuck to the wall next to my monitor for a long time. I also studied Proko's gesture drawing videos and copied them stroke for stroke over and over again, trying to achieve the same lightness in my hand.

Can't help a lot without pics. I'm not a weeb anymore, but there is some decent variation in anime. Naruto is an alright example of in-show variation, but also compare to Mai-Hime or Bleach. Otherwise, do what you like. It's your art - if you've already got an audience (or one in mind), maybe ask them what they think on the topic. Maybe also bring up the discussion in Alt/Sty

Day 1 beginner here. Is there any definitive guide to drawing just by observing the mental images in your mind? Being able to draw anything I want from imagination is why i wanted to learn to draw in the first place.

The images are extremely hard to focus on in my mind but I can't help but feel like the potential is there to grasp the detail and information in a mental image and be able to draw it. I just have to figure out exactly what I need to do. Idk.

Also I don't have a tablet. Would it be ok to try drawing with just a mouse in a digital art program?

Anything. Shit from your desk, your pets, landscapes, etc.

If you're struggling with figures go back all the way back and learn the skeleton, then simplify it for yourself. Then try only using your simplified skeleton and see if it holds up with figures. Add muscle and form from there.

>>2617260

I don't know if there is a structured training method for this exact thing you're asking but I know I have improved my ability to focus on my mental images with mindfulness/vipassana meditation. I read some other d/ic/k who said the same thing. General art training will improve it over time, but meditation specifically trains your "mind muscles" to have it more under your control. It's by no means easy though. It took me two years of meditation before I really saw any benefits, but I stuck with it because I had read so many anecdotal stories about the benefits.

The best advice I can give you is something I wish I was told by someone as a beginner. Don't be too picky in what you draw. Sure, if there's any particular subject you enjoy then draw that, but if you don't know just draw anything. Chairs, cereal boxers, your cum stained undies laying on the floor... It's really not that important. It's a nice feeling to just let go of the idea of drawing nice little interesting drawings and approach it like a workout

If you're beginning, for the love of god don't use a mouse. If you really want to go digital you can get a UGEE tablet on ebay for $60 (AUD, give or take depending on location obviously). They're not as pretty as wacom but they do exactly the same stuff.

Drawing with a mouse will nearly definitely fuck up your hand. You won't get good, natural results (unless you use vector line tools and you're patient). Draw on paper - if you really want digital art scan in your sketches and clean them up with a mouse, but honestly if you're that set on it $60 is probably a good investment.

As for drawing from imagination, do it. But also draw from reference as well. I find that as I've gotten better I've been able to get it out on paper easier because I'm not limited so much by my abilities.

Often it's not as black and white as 'from imagination' and 'from reference' when it comes to learning. If you only draw from reference that's all you'll be able to do, and if you only draw from imagination, good luck with making accurate renditions of whatever it is you're doing.

This is starting to get annoying. Not everything wrong is a symbol. The angles are off, yes, but that does't mean symbol. Over-correcting is a beginner problem in which the beginner learns something (how to construct a head), then applies to to the figure they are drawing (wrong angles and all). This does not equate symbol drawing. Stop.

You are drawing stick figures. You're not explaining how the sections of the body flows from one to the next. The use of alternating lines is helpful in guiding eyes in a smooth manner.

Proportion is somewhat important in executing a good gesture, and it's obvious you have little knowledge of it. Alongside gesture, read up on your anatomy, it is helpful.

the thumbnail reads well and you're pretty good at getting down good colors, but you need to improve your rendering skills and those lines are just really bad. you could always try lineless though.

perspective is off, one of the legs is much longer than the other. not sure what you were going for so i can't help much more than that.

looks pretty good for a first attempt, but you need to concentrate on getting the proportions right next time. you also need to work on noses and lips.

her face actually looks pretty good, but the rest of the anatomy kind of falls apart. some problem areas would definitely be the legs in general, as well as her torso and butt. i'd say feet are probably the most in need of improvement.

maybe try working on ways to improve your art then come back to it when you can? just make a folder for art you can't finish yet and don't want to delete. eventually you'll decide whether you want to come back and finish it, redo it, or delete it.

try getting the basics of body construction down first

personally i wouldn't spend money on paints before getting down the basics in pencil. it's much cheaper that way. if you have a lot of money do what you want i guess.

looking good! i like how you did the hair and your line quality is very nice. the face doesn't match too well, so you should work on that

lots of symbol drawing on the eye, especially with the eyelashes. your line quality kind of sucks too, try drawing them lighter at the start then making them darker in areas with lots of shadows after shading. and try to improve from there.
