More tests, india ink and kids plastic crayons on glossy cardboard. Subject and proportions were all fucked, so I ended up testing weird combinations.

This is quite interesting mixture, because it works in a similar way with overlay in ps on grayscale. Also that surface is quite durable and handles water better than I thought, at least it's about 3-4mm thick. I happen to have this material hundreds of square meters, because it's used as a packaging material for industrial printing plates.

If you want feedback it helps to ask specific questions, otherwise people feel they need to write essays to cover all the things they might not like, but at the same time that's subjective so it helps to for you to give some direction for the criticism you want.

As for these though, there's nothing horrible, but there's nothing really great either. They're just kinda meh designs I guess. But you seem to know where you're going with them so it's hard to tailor advice for you.

There are far eorse artists that regularly post in draw threads. In fact I wouldn't be suprised if you were one of said artists as any one of real skill wouldn't make a big deal over sich a trivial thing.

More to the point there are no rules or tags that state that there is a "minimum requirement" to post in drawthreads. Even still the work he is posring is not excersize based. I see how you may have had a point if all he were posting were beginner level shapes, perspective and other such excersizes but since that isnt the case his stylized shit is right up the alley of this thread along with every other shitty style poster up in here.

I think it's a good picture without them but I really really want there to be some element of a supernatural entity (witch) showing in the picture. I think the disembodied hand really detracts from the image. Given that this hand would have to be a right hand considering the position of the thumb and palm too it's a wonder where the character it's attached to is, but regardless, in my opinion it simply looks overdone. The moths alone should be enough to illicit a sense of mystery and the supernatural provided there are other images in the series to give their presence context.

That must be an awfully tall couch if her head is on the same level as those other two people who are standing up. Also it's messy. And perhaps a little contrived but thats my opinion.

Truthfully you should enjoy your breakthrough. Its not a bad drawing and you are not a bad artist. But the journey to having great expressive powers only starts with being "not bad", and its a long road. So dont tarry.

How is the face? I'm not going for something realistic looking thats not my thing, I just need the face to look believable like a comic book or an illustration.
My main issue is the mouth, I haven't trouble rendering it with a cigarette in it
The neck is a bit long maybe but I don't think that's a big deal, the character is supposed to look slim and gloomy

What you did right: Your base colors were good, and the general values were good, but it seems you aren't sure where to go from there.

I'm not a good teacher so I guess all I can say is you need is more tonal and value range within the general values and tones you already established.

Wood, for instance is brown, yes, but what colors is it made of that amount to that brown color? There's actually lots of blues and greens and reds in there. And if you try to throw in some blue and find it too over powering, de saturate it. And that goes for all colors. But don't be afraid to have a highly saturated color in there, but just be aware that to compensate you'll have to add in a less vibrant color somewhere else to keep the over all balance in check.

yeah they do look p good, but I feel like it needs more depth. it looks rather flat. Maybe add some lighter clouds in the bg

>> No.2612716

>>2612667
Much of the flatness is in the composition, everything is basically on the same distance plane, combined with a foreground wall thing that runs horizontally across the image, there really isn't anything to help indicate depth.

Consider looking at the composition at a different angle, use the water tower to help give depth by moving it closer or further and changing the size accordingly. Having smaller clouds closer tot he horizon would also help. The foreground element doesn't really do anything but chop off the bottom of the image.

Just some initial thoughts. Also consider using just the first 5 or so basic brushes in the default set, and a chalk brush for texture, it makes things easier so you can just focus on shapes.

usually somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes. i do them on 11.75"x14" cheap sketch paper. I don't really care about coming across as creepy. I make small talk and generally be friendly. I'm not uncomfortable drawing cleavage or legs or any of that that's just a part of getting a good drawing done.

what usually helps is showing them drawings I've done already in my sketchbook so they have an idea what a drawing of them entails. I've never had a girl say no just that she's busy. girls like being drawn.

here's another one i did today. i drew her whole figure and we still chatted for like 20 minutes afterwards and she's down to model a again. you gotta just start asking people. You don't have to draw everyone that you see, but if there's someone you find attractive or looks friendly go for it.

My only advice is to keep your damn sketchbook upright or at-least angled toward your face. Your drawings are always good but they're also always top heavy, like you're over compensating the top of the drawing because you're drawing on a flat surface so you wind up with big heads and tiny legs. I can't think of a single drawing you've done that hasn't had this problem.

I mean, yes, "sucks" is a word that could be used to describe this but don't think of it as being good or not, just think of improving. This is where you're at, now just keep moving forward. I think I've gone as far as I could go with this one. I repositioned the water tower and added some more clouds.
As far as the critiques about the road or 'wall' cutting up my image, I didn't change that but took it as a cautionary tale I could apply to future images. My brush choice was a little... ambitious, and unfortunately I was unable to change that so far in the image. I struggled with the clouds the whole way through, trying to make them thick but aesthetically appealing, I ultimately failed, but overall I am happy with the image and with continue to practice my environments.

another thing is that it seems that your hiding feet i don't blame you but it kind of suggest that maybe that's a weak point for you like almost every artist.

to a more non technical critique im left wondering what you are trying to accomplish with this piece. i mean yeah its obviously wizards or illustration based but it feels super generic. here clothing is basic and the sihlouetes of the cunts in the background don't bring up to much interest either which is fine i guess/background charecters etc..

For a simple spell caster it works overall but i think you should be thinking about how to stand out and make something awesome at this point since it seems your have the basic gist of anatomy and comp down.

Let me answer this for you. The original ref is from a series of shitty photos I took out of a car window.
I thought having a ref would be sufficient so I am currently kicking myself for not establishing any perspective lines. I didn't even use the reference enough for my laziness to be justified.

I guess backgrounds and such are trial and error, and I find this all really interesting.

Your perspective is bunk unfortunately, you've probably noticed there's something off but you're not sure what. Basically while the elements of your picture are following a one point perspective correctly, your buildings/objects, if viewed from the side would be SUPER LONG. That trough is like 50 feet long and those buildings at the back are like 200 feet high. The best way to think about what your'e doing wrong is that you have to assume that your vanishing point is about 5 miles away give or take so as objects get closer to it they should proportionately shrink along the x, y and very importantly the Z axis, your problem is that you haven't taken the z axis into account as much as you should thus you have super elongated architecture and objects that seem to be distorted even though, technically, you're following the one point perspective correctly.

This is very nice, Brian. The combination of pen and pencil is perfect, nice line weight, nice hatching all around.
The only flaw I would think to point out aside from the massive head as always is that you tried to shade her face blurring the graphite with your fingers? I don't know if it's the fault of the quality of the photo giving me this impression, but it's pretty sporadic, and it leaves the face flat, specially the forehead.

Overall I am liking how you are getting closer to Leyendecker's style, all this good use of contrasting values, angular lines and hatching, despite you having said numerous times you don't like his style...

On another note I would like to remind you that I hate you.

im actually trying to emulate ingres more than leyendecker. that drawings all pencil no pen, i just cheated by messing with the levels and making it darker. agreed that it has a bit uncanny valley in the forehead, I wasn't thinking enough about texture, and i probably shouldnt have left so much of her skin the white of the paper. i did find a better way to draw the hair with that drawing though. more subtractive instead of completely additive, where i blocked in the values for the entire shape of the hair then subtracted the hightlights with an eraser and added the darker areas on top of it. I'd like to try it with a live model when I can get someone to sit for a longer pose.

I always think of an ellipse as something that's not a flat plane. I try thinking about it more like a piece of wire warping and twisting in space.

possibly. but i can't be 100%. but when you're looking at an object, say a box. and you see the left side of it and the top of the box. you can easily say its below the horizon line and to the right of your center of vision.

The proportions aren't terrible but your colors and values are. Read Color&Light ASAP and pay more attention to the actual colors/values of the subject, not what you assume they are.

To compare values put them both in greyscale and see how much of you are. For colors it's a bit harder and you just need to understand them + observe them better. Mainly your issues are washed out grey colors. Her shirt isn't actually grey if you look closely. it has tons of juicy bounce light on it which is reflected from her skin and the surrounding. The skin isn't saturated enough, particularly the shadows.

>>2613838
It's not bad but there are some color and lighting issues.
The white/grey parts are too grey. There is no bounce light anywhere, it really adds life to a piece. The gold isn't rendered like gold at all, look closely at some ref, it should be much more reflective. and it would affect the color of its surroundings as well, like the floor.

It's a little unclear how much creasing there is in the armpits, but my instinct is that a little more would be good. Skin folds and squashes at joints. The breasts look suspiciously firm and idealised too. A bit of sag will add realism. Possibly drop the left one a tiny bit lower as they tend to follow the shoulders.

Overall though, it's really good.

The fabric looks really great and the hands and feet are excellent.

The head is a bit problematic though; the face-on pose seems forced and unnatural. The ears seem like they should be more hidden; they seem to be drawn as if the head were at a slight angle to the viewer, but if so one of them should be mostly behind the head. The hair is too symmetrical and seems to be caught in the middle of a strong movement which isn't reflected elsewhere in the figure.

I'm also missing any idea of what she is meant to be doing. She seems too off-balance to be crouching still, but she seems too calm to be jumping or something. She just seems to be floating in space.

Any tips on making this look less boring? (this is just the rough, obv) Its supposed to be a card for a card game I think. I was asked to draw "a creepy trench coat mafia guy, like just a guy in a trenchoat with his face in shadow) easy enough, I'm just afraid it looks too boring. (please ignore the boarder and background)

My main issue at the moment is now determining the shape of the plane from life.

It's very hard to eyeball it.

Should I draw it from reference as best I can, and then base my vanishing points off of it?

Thanks for the crit! Haven't had one in a while

Yeah, the head is a little bit forced to turned. And the crouching bothers me a bit throughout the drawing, I guess that's the reason why
