Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

→ →
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

after going through keys to drawing and perspective made easy,im lost on what to do. I figured out that im a grind-a'holic. Exp per hour was my shit in vidya and realised i learn anything the same. I have to grind out something a shit ton. Im try to nuke a sketchbook per study type. book on hands and another on cars. shit like that. Im just not sure what to focus on or have a few sketchbooks dedicated to. I would even work a small sketchbook per excersize in the books i already have. i just dont want to waste time. Any ideas where a beginner should focus on and start making a check list to reach internediate level.

Drawing the models will help you understand how certain muscles work in different positions, and use that knowledge when drawing from imagination.

Here's a way to make *sure* yo7 aren't just copying them.

Draw them once. Then draw them again without looking at any reference or your originals. Most likely it'd gonna look bad, but doing this exercise will get you to focus on understanding what's going on, because if you understand you can construct without reference. I'd recommend doing this with every piece you do that has reference. Once using the reference, oncell without. It will help.

Right side of the picture, the eye in your drawing has no white showing on the side, where as the photo does, the mouth is open in the photo, where as it isn't in the drawing, there's not any value in the face in your drawing and has nothing else to really suggest form, outside of contours around the eyes where the sockets are.

You've also drawn the chin line as a smooth contour, where as in the picture the bottom of the chin is flatter, with the arcs puffing out more at the sides, baby fat filling out the cheeks and hanging down a little.

Also, as a question: how do you resist the urge to draw small? I cant help but feel insecure when drawing larger than pic related. It just feels like I'll make a mistake and it'll be unfixable, which is ironic since erasing mistakes with a small drawing just makes a smudge swamp, especially after I use a darker pencil for finishing. Maybe I'm insecure with measuring, or maybe it's because I only have 10 pages of charcoal paper left and I'm poor. But I need to break the habit. Tips? Don't worry about clothes at this stage. First you need to git gud at drawing a realistic human figure, then you'll have the ability to feel weight and form, which is crucial for drawing clothes. Clothes are just silky covers that hang over and bring out the fleshy forms underneath, they don't really have a form of their own.

I have no idea how to start with light & shading. I've been practicing traditionally for months now, and I still don't really shade anything. When learning perspective, I did a shitload of boxes, and that helped hammer in the basics. Is there anything similar I could do get started with shading and values?

Just to overclarify, I'm not looking for some 10 minute video or a book, I'm looking for an exercise I can do repeatedly to get the basics. It's how dumb me learns best.

As for your drawing, the whole face is at the wrong angle. Look at how her right eye is higher than the left, at the tilt of the nose and how one corner of her mouth is higher than the other.

The lay in is off in a lot of ways, I think it would benefit you to take a lot of extra time to just measure things out and make sure that the drawing is laser accurate. Everything really depends on getting that accurate lay-in, getting your shadows, planes, and edges mapped out neatly. After that it's almost paint by numbers and blending. If you just open up the painting and reference in two tabs and go between them you can see where things are off.

Take a lot of time and be patient with it. Don't use black or dark brown in your skin shadows, you want to warm up towards red as you go darker or you'll get a muddy look. Lay in clean tiles and just blend the edges out where you need to, don't over blend. If you're working the hell out of something trying to fix it, you made a mistake earlier and you're just going to make things muddy. Simple indication > complicated detail.

Beyond that it's just knowledge of the figure and practice. Study anatomy, the planes of the face and body is a great help for painting, gesture drawing, construction, all that shit.

Try doing your next one in just black and white, so you can just work on refining one thing at a time without worrying about what colours you're using and how they interact. Keep practicing your drawing too. If you can perfect your rendered pencil drawings, it's a lot easier to move into painting and you're not juggling so many balls.

This is my very first attempt at learning how to draw, from the first exercise in Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing on page 13. I don't really expect anyone to reply to this post since it's literally attempt #1 of somebody reading a book already telling them what to do, but I just wanted to be part of the conversation. The point of the exercise is to draw your own crossed feet while attempting to draw what you see instead of symbols, and avoid looking too much at your paper and instead blind draw.

Don't feel bad about it. You didn't make a master piece but you pushed yourself forward and that's what matters. As for your drawing it looks pretty boring. There is no interesting technique like cross hatching or line weight. There is no balance in light and dark, you just have these two patches of dark for the hair and beard that look nothing like hair, gotta practice that. Plenty of other problems but for now just focus on light and dark balance with some shading and more interesting line weight.

What I mean is, how do I learn to imply foliage? Mullins didn't paint ever single plant that would be in the image, but it looks like he did and I can't figure out how to start learning how to do that.

>> No.2596972

What you are wanting to achieve in terms of brush economy and implying form and detail go way beyond just foliage. It is some really difficult stuff to learn, but it's really cool that foliage is motivating you to think about it. I really like foliage too. But there is nothing that anyone can really tell you that will be much help, in the end like most questions the answer will come down to just drawing/painting. Draw some bushes and grasses outside like I said before, think in different terms than that of drawing every blade. Draw the forms that the grasses create, lay down a solid value structure. OR do draw every blade of grass, go and have a look at some Andrew Wyeth, probably some of the most beautiful grass ever painted.

Before anything in the way of an explanation, you've answered your own question in a few different ways. If anything short of reverse engineering won't help you learn how to go about these things, why not reverse engineer it? Anything you learn will be infinitely more valuable because you took the time to figure it out, and in this case it's doubly important because implication of detail is useful to know with any subject. What are some steps to take when you do reverse engineer it? You said it yourself; don't draw every individual blade of grass. You know that Mullins didn't, but it looks like he did, which only leaves a few possible outcomes of what he actually did. Luckily for you, it's all right there in front of you if you've a fresh set of eyes to see it with.

I won't take a chance to learn away from you, but there are a few things you can watch out for. Learning the exact technique he used is besides the point - it makes as much sense for a writer to memorize really great sentences from his favorite books to use in his own, word for word. Instead, try to take into account the purpose of each area before you learn from it; the bottom-right in the segment that you posted, for example, is of middling importance to the piece. It's not the focal point by any means, but it is the foreground, and it will go a long way to set the stage for the rest of the environment. It's rendered appropriate to it's importance to the piece, as opposed to other areas which range from being looser to more refined - he does the exact same thing with the figures.

With that in mind, here's something small from the same piece. All I did was blur out the high lit portions. Take from that what you will. For comparison, look at the full piece from what you posted, and the stock photo here. Look at the photo, squint your eyes heavily, then lightly, then not at all, and then look at the Mullins bit. Don't squint at the Mullins bit. Connect the dots.

Best of luck!

So what you're saying is, use a textured brush for low-contrast areas to imply more details than is actually there and then add a few high-contrast actual details to draw the eye?

That's the start of it, but it's still surface. That's the "how", now figure out the "why". The "how" will let you do it just as he did without regard to suitability or appropriateness, the "why" will let you understand why he did it that way so that you can approach it however you want, with whatever you want.

The "how" and the "why" together would be this; you look at a reference shot and by squinting discern the effect of certain foliage. To imply this effect, you start with a texture brush proper to that foliage to lend some noise which feels like crossing ferns, or tangled dried branches, or leaves upon the ground.

Then, you think about how important this section is in the piece - will it fall under viewer scrutiny, or be in their periphery? If it's the section I posted, when compared to the full piece, it's actually somewhat negligible - so why would we add highlights to draw the eye? If that area falls under any extra scrutiny it'd probably fall apart, so it probably would not be to draw the eye. Instead, we would be adding just enough information with the little highlit portions and leave it at that.

Most importantly, if you're tired and you know you're tired, then rest. Don't be rough on yourself. Hard work ethic means nothing if it'd take you 4 hours to learn something tired as opposed to an hour well rested. Look at this again tomorrow with fresh eyes. For when that time comes, here's another painting with the exact same principles, done in a completely different manner. In this, a section of foliage is the actual focal point, so take that into account as well.

Not those other anons, but this does NOT mean you can't try to develop your style in tandem anon. It does mean though that you should always, always, always be striving to create realism first. Study it, learn it, get it down. Do that before devoting the majority of your time to style. Again, this doesn't mean you can't have fun on the side.

This gets a lost a lot sometimes I think, especially for beginners-

Studying is important! BUT So is having fun! Do BOTH.

But remember it is studying that will allow you get better, which means you have more skills to apply when you are having fun, and so the wonderful feedback loop continues and you will someday make it.
