Stiff, because he's just standing straight. Bend that leg, bitch. Work it. Also, if he's supposed to be holding that leaning shield, lift it and make his body sag or strain with or against the weight. Right now, it's just kind of floating. Also his fingers are huge. The away facing lion faces are missing cheeks and cheekbones. The shields are way thicker than they need to be, but that's fantasy.

Noted and thank you. I saw the arm in the upper right but for some reason every attempt I made to correct it failed and after a certain point I've found that it's best to just let those problems be and move on so the piece isn't a total bust.

But damn I didn't even notice that tiny head thing anon. Scary. I was feeling pretty good about them only to find I didn't even notice they were all critically flawed. Fuck, back to the drawing board I suppose.

What I do to help me see colors better is I unfocus my vision so that everything is blurry. Once all the details are gone it's easier to see what colors you're missing. Also don't be afraid to use jet black. Your background on the right side is too light and is messing up the colors you want to use for the shaded area of his face.

The original has a cooler temperature background and warm reds and oranges where as you've gone more purple and grey. Which isn't a bad color scheme but it's not the same as your reference.

I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse but those are my 2 cents. Good job though, this is mostly pretty good.

Fair enough. You could make the sword be a ghost sword or something too. Most normies wouldn't recognize the proper use or misuse of a sword anyway, so it probably doesn't matter.

>> No.2594803

The intention isn't communicated clearly enough. It looks like a mistake. The woman won't be enough. The issue is that the sword and armour are drawn too deadpan. Give the sword some eccentricities that imply it's no ordinary sword. Maybe change the lighting scheme to something less typically medieval fantasy.

Is it your intention to practically work in grayscale? The composition and perspective is as if someone took a photo of what's happening on a theatre stage. Or it's a screenshot from a point and click game. For foliage, you should define out a few bushes/trees and just have some sort of interesting brushwork and colors elswhere that kind of remids foliage. There is no point on focusing everywere.

Another thing, look at a similar scene in the woods by Mike Azevedo, the composition works much better here, in your painting the giant almost blends in with the forest and does nothing, just sits there near one side of the painting, also check the value structure here and the powerful light source helps pop out the important elements.

Good perspective, good use of foreground, mid ground, and background, overall composition though, kinda weak. Do you want to show the girl, I hope not because she's way too tiny to be the main subject. Just show off the cool china room? If so you've got way too much negative space. You could lover or raise the camera to show the room in a more extreme angle, for instance. It's also too balanced, not sure if I want to look out the window (which is not good) or at the girl.

For digital colouring remember to take into account the reflection of the armour unless it's going to be scuffed and dirty. Since it's such a basic picture of just a character, remember to use a decent amount of vibrant colours to make it interesting.

Your line work can be improved unless it was just a guide. I recommend practising by drawing two big lines, and connecting them together with smaller ones like train tracks.

The armour itself is well put together, and the pieces seem like they all fit together except for that one knee. It looks like a circle floating next to the body. I'd either put some straps on it, or make it look like it's a joint in a bigger piece of leg armour.

dude you should really try to get some value shifts going on, it can sometimes feel too 2d and flat when you don't have a clear indication of 3 dimensional form, which is done through a solid understanding of lighting and values, as well as material rendering knowledge. I like the lines though, seems like this must have taken you a long time. I personally dont have the attention span to force linework for over 30 minutes. Keep going with it would be nice to see end result. Doesn't hurt to have a little bit of perspective in there either btw.

It's mostly just to push the color temperatures. Since your picture has mostly designated the light to be warm, that means shadows are cool. Adding subtle hints for blue make it cooler.

Love the values in these. Would suggest softening your touch on certain drawings however- for example, the stomach/torso area of the woman in the top image, left/topmost picture looks very harsh. It's almost like she's a block of stone rather than a soft, fleshy human body.
Generally keep doing what you're doing, though; I think I've seen your other sketches on here and you're doing the right thing to improve.

hmm for the blue misty light stuff, use more saturated color at the point of focus, and let the rest of it can a less saturated color, maybe a slight different hue as well.
having a limited palette is good but make sure your character doesnt blend in with the background,
beyond that its too early into this drawing to say anything else really, the blues are a little overwhelming is all i can tell but the three colors harmonize well

Got it, thanks. For some reason I thought the characters sharing the background colors was a thing people do. It doesn't make much sense thinking back on it. Would using shadows that are similar to the colors in the backgrounds work, though? (in this case, making the background distinctly purple and the foreground distinctly orange, but having the shadows on the helmet be in a similar shade of purple to make the orange focus stand out even more? if the bright blue thing wasn't there stealing all the attention, that is)

yeah definitely!
in general say your darkest/heaviest color is a deep purple, using shades of the same purple will almost always look good and it will unify your palette and its a great way to avoid black.
same goes for whites. try using a light cream color or pale turquoise as your white as well for highlights and rim light. you can get something more interesting than just defaulting to white

His foot is so broken it hurts to look at. We need to be seeing the bottom of his right foot or it at least needs to be angled more toward the viewer.

Colors look ok, all you need is more contrast. If you look at the values you're using I'd say your range goes from 20 to 80 so you're missing out on the high highlights and the low lowlights.

Protip when adding highlights to his skin, most people will just take the color and then basically add white to it to lighten it. Don't do that, instead do this:
Look at his shin for example, in photoshop, color pick that color, now bring up the color picker window (pic related) and use a cooler, more desaturated but lighter color as your highlights.

So basically color pick his skin, then drag that little slider on the right down to the reds or even back up toward the purples, then move the hue/value selector over to the left a bit and then up a bit. This will leave you with a color that will give your skin a lot more depth. Conversely when you want to add shade, do the opposite, use a warmer (more yellowy/orange) more saturated color. (move the slider up a bit, then move the hue/value selector to the right and then down a bit)

I'm sorry if all that is super confusing but I'm away from my tablet so I can't show you via paintover.

Fiddle with the flow and sharpness of your brush, ie: very low flow (2 to 5%ish) and a very soft round brush coupled with frequent use of the alt (color picker) button and there you have it.

I am working on a Banquet still life in the style of pieter claesz.
This is the initial drawing in vine charcoal on a 40 x 30 canvas.
My goal is to have it e in a dark background with the light source coming from the right. It will hang in my dining room and the window is on the right.
So my drawing still has some issues. Need to refine the folded/crumpled cloth, as well as adding more detail to the purple cabbage.
I need to figure out what is my focal point in the painting.
All comments welcome.

I would do an exercise where you create a few lines for the initial skeleton. Circle for the head, with 3 lines showing the 1/3 position across the face and torso and limbs.
Yes it is a simple drawing but not sure what she is doing.? Sitting with her head in her knees and 1 foot raised?
The face looks too profile, a 3/4 view would be more interesting.
