Last thread: >>2559078

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, do you know the mahou kotobas that turn it all upside down?

Before I keep going, does the anatomy of this make any sense?

the top of her torso is twisting to the right, while the bottom and her legs are sort of facing forward. I am not sure if that looks right, or if I'm drawing the anatomy right at all. I just need some feedback.

The characters and the background feel like they really don't jive together, it feels like they're just floating there. Probably because the characters have cleaner lineart/color and the background is a bit more loose and painterly.

>> No.2568578

>>2568515
I like this concept a lot, but I'm not so sure about the heavy lines on the characters/animals. It clashes with the environment's style a lot and makes them look somewhat out of place in that sense. There's also a very distinct yellow-light blue-shadow kind of look to the background that feels very nice, but isn't reflected in the characters, again, making them look kind of "stuck in there"

Yeah, I'm going for something like pic related. With lineart figures and a painted background. Obviously I need to add a lot more detail to the bg, as well as some elements in the foreground. That's what comes next once I work out the shadows properly.

The shadows do have a slight blue tint on the characters, though I could defintely push it to a bluer color, I'll play around with it some.

>>2568584
Yeah, that's the idea.

>>2568556
Yeah man, that was me, haha. Yeah, I like my Zelda a lot too. It makes me kinda sad that the official Zelda probably won't look as cool.

I'm gonna do a full character painting of her holding a bow once I finish this. I really like the way her design came out..

Try to blend them if you don't wish to go for Anime renders.

It's not a magic tool though. If your colors and shadows aren't good it won't work. Try to look for some pro drawings and see how they do it. The skirt's especially looks bad. gradiant tool can look quite bad when you don't use it properly too, and in your case you'll need to work more on it.

The blush is too big, resize it. Same for the two dots of light, make them smaller and put them higher.
Don't go too white with the colors of the eye.
You should change the highlights of the hairs, they're too small compared to the rest, doesn't works very well.
And remove that shadow gradient on top of the head, doesn't works.

that caveman you posted has a very small forehead though. The guy you were replying to means the overall ratio between cranium size vs rest of the face. Little children and babies have very large cranium to jaw ratio, thus we associate it with cuteness. Literally one of the most basic ideas of stylization and design that you can find anywhere in western cartoons and anime. Disney even uses this principle in their animal designs if they want to show cuteness.

it's supposed to be a top lighting scenario, tho i guess the direction of the lens flare kinda contradicts that

at the end of the day the lighting is supposed to be more stylized than realistic, though. realistically a shadow would never just exist as a line like that, but graphically it looks nice

maybe if i inverted the direction of the diagonal? had it higher on the left and lower on the right? ... i think that would resolve the issue youre pointing out while retaining the graphic nature of the image. i'll try it out

my only concern with that is the diagonal as it currently exists has a nice rhythm with the shape of the hat, but experimenting with it going a different direction isn't that hard to just try, so i'll see what it looks like thanks anon

>> No.2570081

Even stylized art has to follow logic. You can totally have a shadow contradicting the direction of the light, but you need to have a pretty good reason for doing it.

I think the character itself is good as it is. I wouldn't change the direction of the shadow. It's the lensflare what's causing the issue here and the fix would be changing it's position or removing it completely.

You can also probably just leave it as is and it would pass with a less demanding audience.

My friend offline recommended removing the lens flare, too, when I showed him both. He said he had no issue believing the shadow until the lens flare was added. I just removed it.

Thanks for your input anon. sounds like you and him are about on the same page.

I went ahead and changed a lot. I tried to make the butt cheeks more visible by using a kind of a weird shadow + raising the contrast of the background. Also I would stop hiding feet, guessing you aren't so good with them? Don't take this as critic as I'm just bending your artwork to show you different ideas. don't change it, no need to do, it's more aestethic as it was before, it doesn't need to make sense, it's not a 3D render

it does not follow form, but who cares, it's cartoon

and the redline makes no sense at all, it doesn't even indicate the direction of the light source, there's no x/z/y on that redline, that's not how to give critique about shadow calculation kek

Try not drawing each individual stand, or if you really want that same look don't spew lines at random and try to put in more detail and uniformity. one tip with fists: don't make the fingers parallel.
1. they're not parallel in the first place
2. even when they are "parallel", when you consider perspective they won't be seen as such

this is pretty much a general rule. avoid parallel alignments on organic stuff or stuff in perspective.
in fact when considering perspective, just never draw any parallel lines ever.

specifically for the fists, make the "fan out" instead of parallel, you'll see that it is a thousand times easier to understand.
if someone has that 0033 image for hands and fists, post it since it's relevant.

The arms themselves doesn't looks too bad, which makes me think you copied them from somewhere else, because the rest doesn't follows at all in quality. The blue dress looks bad, the head structure is wonky, and that whole yellow ligntning would need more work. What's with the shading of the dress being white instead of yellow?

I didn't copy anything from anywhere, I just have more practice with nude models than anything else, and arms are easier to stylize for me I guess. I don't know what went wrong with the torso in all honestly. The sketch looked fine, but when I added color to the dress, it just fell apart. I used the bright blue on the dress because that's how it looked in the reference image and I didn't think about it.

I just can't seem to make faces look good in any sort of style either.

>Something to note is that anime tends to be very zoomed out compared to the original

No it isn't. Most anime gets drawn at around A4 size or sometimes even smaller. All you need to do is look at making of videos of anime productions.

The reason magazine scans are so big is because scanners scan at really high resolutions.

You can get good fidelity out of an A4 scan because it's not like blowing up a small resolution image to a higher resolution on a computer and it ending up blurry.

You're scanning something composed of real life atoms with a lens to translate it into image data a computer can view essentially.

You can try this yourself even. Scan an A4 or even A5 page of something and you'll see just how big the image will be.

no emphasis on the right lines, no clear shapes and lines. also you rely too much on hatching and your hatching isn' very good at all.
try to create clear shapes when hatching. when i look at the shapes of your hatching, the edges they create are always random, fuzzy and soft instead of defined and deliberate.

FUCK. Something's bugging the hell out of me and I need someone else's eyes, I hope this is the right thread to post this in.

So, pic related is just something that came up sketching, nothing particularly special, but after a lot of erasing and redrawing there's still something at its core that's annoying me. And I think my eyes are not at a level where I can say it's wrong AND justify why/fix it. It's just a sketch, I could jump to something else, I'll delet this anyways, but this is literally telling me there's a weakness right under my nose. Maybe it's something with the proportions? the neck? face? something inconsistent? whatever it is, I know it's definitely the next thing I need to improve on. Which is why this sketch is slightly more important than usual.

Please /ic/ just tell me everything wrong with this picture.

Whenever you sense something is off (and even when you feel everything's fine) take a couple hours away from the drawing, maybe even a day, and then look at it again. Another tip is flip it to see if anything looks weird.

At the moment her head is too big for her shoulders. It looks like she has a very stubby neck. She needs wider shoulders. Try fixing the shoulders and then see if her head & neck look okay.

One thing that is still sticking out is her weird baby hand that was told to your earlier. You attempted to fix the other arm but completely glossed over that- given that your angle is from the front, that hand should be more normal looking.

The arm holding the camera still seems a little...off too, its hard to put my finger on it but check out the picture, it might help clear up what I'm attempting to say despite it being a slight different angle.

her right hand is too small, the perspective isnt working on that arm at all, it just looks proportionally too big instead of the elbow coming at you. and her left wrist looks chunky in a bad way, doesnt flow into the hand right.
same issue with the left legs perspective, maybe slim her left leg down at the knee?

That's very debatable. The original drawing is at the worst "generic non pro drawing" level, it's not cute at all, which is kind of the first point of moe. Ton of different possible faces exists based on the appealing features of anime.moe, and that right one is for a much better example because it's what it aims to be, cute and good looking.

That remade drawing still have lots of stuff you can find in eastern art, the nose especially. The head size looks good, It could be bigger but it's good like that, which is what matters.
The body looks wide enough to me.

He just redrew it in his style in the first place.

that's the exact opposite of cute, the proportions of the face are fucked (eyes go way too high) which make the head look smaller and ugly, the nose and mouth are ugly as fuck and the opposite of moe (just look at the picture you posted).
It's still a better drawing, but it completely fails in the moe department which is the point

Not sure how much you've been crit'd on this, so if there's anything I've noted that you're already on the way to fixing or prefer not to, sorry! Pic related. Pink notes are more subjective, since I think the stylization on the faces is a little uncanny, but it is 'style'.

Didn't have space or stamina to write it in the pic, but I think you need to revisit the drapery in the Bougureau. Looser fabric folds much more loosely and in bigger shapes than stiffer fabric.

Love the palette, especially in the black hair and the foliage to the right. It's really turning out great.
