Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email lava@lavaflake.com.

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

If you made the animation in photoshop on the timeline or made timeline from layers then you should be able to preview and save it.

If you're importing the gif from something else you need to go Import > Video frames from layers, and type *.* in the search to make gif file types available. Then go to Window > Animation or Timeline or something depending on your version, and then in top right of that little window is a menu. Click "make frames from layers", and that should give you the animation.

You then need to save for web and devices.

But really ball bounce anon, if you tweened that in something then ofc it will look wrong and unnatural. Tweening is best for when you want a smooth motion, like the background scrolling by at different speeds as you look out the window of a car. For a ball bounce or a movement like that you should do the keyframes and then figure out the rest. I saw from the layers that it moves almost the same distance up and down each frame, when it should be moving down faster then slowing as it rises, maybe have 3-4 frames of it just sitting at the top then the slow fall back down, etc. You also don't need to animate on 1s except for particularly fast movements, but maybe it's simpler for starting up.

Animator's Survival Guide is gold for this stuff btw and might be in the art book thread, there's downloads of it for sure at least.

No problem anon and that looks better already. The last few frames rising up could be dragged out a bit more, you want it to feel like it slows right down, almost hovers, then starts teetering over the edge to fall back down.

I appreciate the input man. Honestly though I was streaming the movie for others. I've seen that movie umpteen times and I know how slow I am at drawing. figured I'd give the people something else to watch instead of paint drying if that makes sense (I actually had the movie minimized on my monitor). I was looking at my monitor quite a bit at my reference (pic related), as I'm way too shit to draw from imagination. I need to stop trying for 1:1 replicas I feel soon, as now I feel like I'm plagiarizing. Thought everyone here knew I was too shit to draw from imagination.

1:1 replication is fine as long as you are learning something from it. Especially for beginners, it's good for honing your perception. Just practising measurements and breaking things down into basic shapes until it becomes second nature. Use it to practice your sense of distance and angles when blocking things in. Turning the image upside down and drawing it like that is a good exercise, it makes you stop paying attention to the subject and start seeing exactly what's there.

It doesn't really matter what you use as ref to practice those things, line drawings like the one you used are actually very good for it, for now at least. You should never feel like studying something is plagiarism (as long as you're up front about it).

I'm not participating or even lurking LAS, but I saw it first few months ago and I see it still goes on so I'm curious:

Hi, trad artist/LAS here.

Is there a way (like a filter of sorts) of making my whites "whiter" without affecting the rest of the colors of my artwork in photoshop?

I usually go to adjustments/brightness and contrast and or Levels, but unless I make very specific selections through the "magic wand" or "Lasso tool" everything gets messed up.

you can use the magic wand or quick select to pick all of one color (you can hold shift to make multiple selections or click on the modifer that should bee the normal tool icon with a plus sign, located in the bar on the top under the menus. this way you can select all your highlights at once) and then hit ctrl U you adjust hue saturation and brightness.

Well with the current system, no challenges require daily checkins/submissions. People can do 140 gestures on the last day if they want to. imo it's a bad system that only allowed for one type of challenges - not the daily type. And in this type that's 'supported', people should be able to join whenever. Shouldn't even really be a sign up, just a submit being open for the duration of the challenge

I'd still rate grach over others just because of the line control but I can see what you mean other people having more interesting uses of lineweight and such.

You are right and you are wrong, Style is something that has a lot depth, and how you approach and think about even the simplest thing ( even stick figures) is a part of what CREATES that depth.

And on another note dont feel bad about taking cues from or studying the methods of artists you like. Just like everything else, dont let it develop into a crutch. I remember when I would stare out the same like 3 or 4 catbib drawings and sketch pages and wanting trying to learn to draw like that

I changed that a while ago so it's pretty close. It used to be "countdown until 00:00:00" and if your PC's time was different than the server it could cause issues. I changed it to have the server figure out the time til 00:00:00 then tell your computer to countdown to that number. It's as accurate as I can make it but it can be off by a second or two
