Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Artbook Thread" to find your desired books. (Or look in the new sticky)

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Old thread: >>2536826

>> No.2540545

>>2540540

This sticky is overwhelming to a newcomer, in-concise, and difficult for finding a starting point based on an individual's skill. It's also just plain too long and littered with corollaries between main sections to bog down the uninvested reader.

The original sticky did it better because:
- Steps of artist development were clearly outlined with numbers (Step 1 - Fixing symbol drawing, Step 2 - Construction, Step 3 - Perspective, etc. etc.)
- Individual steps of artist development were briefly outlined in one-two paragraphs and a book to read for more information was provided in the same block of information for those who wanted to read further. This enabled the process of people painlessly reading the paragraph, being able to determine if they needed to spend time in those fundamentals, and then easily having a bootstrapping point with a single book (or two) to go to.

I hope your sticky improves and begins to read more as a section of fundamentals with a corresponding text for those wanting to read more as opposed to it being a self-enclosed tutorial (what it currently reads as) with a density of information that lacks enough brevity to be considered useful at a glance.

Maybe do a github with pull requests so that you can curate the informativeness of your content as opposed to a google doc?

>> No.2540546

>>2540540
As it currently stands, the original sticky is just plain better and there's no reason why I wouldn't recommend that instead of your Google doc.

Again, I'd love to see it come into its own, wish you well.

I'm still not sure what to do with touching the paper.

If you touch the paper the lines are usually steadier. But the friction is inconsistent, so you get more completely defective lines. This is especially a problem at the edge of the page. And you have to preload the hand at the start of the line or it will be defective because of the flesh squashing.

Maybe using a low friction glove would help. But then I'm stuck using a glove, and I still need to apply preload which slows me down. So I think maybe it's best to train non-hand-contact drawing. Do any pros draw non-hand-contact?

>> No.2540733

>>2540696
Pros are using an overhand grip while resting on the ring finger and pinky. But if your wrist has to touch the paper to draw a straight line, by all means do so. Except the fundamentals, there's no wrong or right way to do art.

>> No.2540736

>>2540733
>overhand grip while resting on the ring finger and pinky
Meaning same as a tripod grip except the pencil goes under the index+middle fingers instead of over? This does make it easier to rest on the ring/pinky fingernails (better than resting on skin) compared to tripod grip, but it also forces the pencil to contact the page at a shallow angle, which contradicts advice I've heard to hold it vertical.

>> No.2540745

>> No.2540750

>>2540736
>it also forces the pencil to contact the page at a shallow angle

The keyword here is pencil. With a pencil, you can draw tone (side of the lead) or line (at the tip). That's why the angle is shallow. Since you're following drawabox, they're recommending to use a pen. A pen only has a small tip, so you have to hold it fairly vertically and that's easier done with a tripod grip.

When I draw with a pen, I hold in tripod style while resting on the side of my hand. Don't pay too much attention to it though. It's just a matter of practice.

>> No.2540755

>>2540750
>Since you're following drawabox, they're recommending to use a pen
But the reasons are bullshit, because nobody is forcing you to use an eraser. So I am using a pencil because I like pencils.

>tripod style while resting on the side of my hand
The resting on the side of the hand is what I think could be a bad habit. I don't think resting on fingernails is a problem, but that's difficult and uncomfortable unless you use overhand grip, which is only good for tone not line. Does anybody draw line/steep angle with no hand contact?

Comparing this with photos of toucans, the body looks too small for the neck/head and the feet seem like they were drawn without reference. The leg connecting to the hand's joint appears like an extended palm, whereas on the actual birds it's more of a circular bulge. The toes are much too small and short, and a toucan has front-facing toes, two back-facing, the back-facing being the outside toes (first and fourth). I'll post the best front and back photos I could find, the second of them in a reply to this post.

Go slower with them. The goal with the first line is to get a straight line across the paper. After that, your goal is to trace over that same line as precisely as you can. Think of it as inking over a sketch and take it slow, but not so slow that your lines are super wobbly.

Last one is much too saturated, especially since your greens contrast with some amber backlight, which makes it look like the green comes more from a neon bulb than the actual ambient light of the scene.

Unless you specifically want to paint a super wide composition, you might have an easier time working in a format like 16:9. If you're trying to capture the feel of a "forest soil" rather than a forest, though, you can keep going with what you have.

Look at different photos of forests and study their palettes before deviating too much into stylized colors. There's two things that make stylized colors feel real: an accentuation of an unusual, but already existing (real world) lighting scheme, or realistic detail+composition. I think you'll have a lot of trouble making good thumbnails if your colors are too out there and you're unfamiliar with the subject.

I like the page in Loomis with the planes, because you can draw it with straight lines so it's easy to line things up. What you posted is like the aborted fetus version of Loomis. Like what the fuck is the finished product, there is literally no definition on the nose bridge area, which is the hardest part, and the eye plane looks un-anatomical as shit. Step 8 basically saves his head but he pulled it out of his ass so it's pointless. How will you know how to draw that shape at any other angle? He already knew how to draw and tried to put some shapes on it to make it repeatable for others but failed horribly.

Just use Loomis, or Hogarth if you like suffering. I already posted my head so you can laugh at how bad I am.

How the hell do I draw big with a stylus? Do I have to keep any part of my hand from resting on my tablet so my hand doesn't drag across it? It's really frustrating when I can get all right shapes and lines on paper, and then they all look extremely squiggly and misshapen on a tablet.

I just want to know because I'm going to fill out a sheet with a bunch of fucking circles so they don't look all mutated when I draw them.

When painting individual trees, I was told to understand foliage as 3d shapes. In a forest, I believe it might be better to treat it as "layers".

Look at your ref. For each layer of trunks you painted, try to identify the relative amount of leaves on the same level as these trunks, as well as their general shape and color. Consider how much variance there is between the darkest and lightest leaves - in some forest environments, because so much of the light is diffuse, there really aren't a lot of shadows in the leaves' mass.

Also keep in mind that environment compositions generally tend to have lowest contrasts in the background, and highest contrasts in the foreground. This might affect each layer of leaves to a separate degree, which isn't something I see happening in what you painted (it looks like all the leaves have equally disorderly contrasts). Don't be afraid to fog up your set with a soft brush - it's super easy to do if you work in layers.

For other stuff, palette is closer to life, though your highlights on the trees are much too pronounced (trees are rough, not glossy) and should be done with a soft brush, over a larger area.

Try starting with bigger brushes, and creating stronger value contrasts in your initial layout by using darker and lighter colors, as well as a harder brush (you can blend with opacity, but the edge of the brush should be hard).

Your initial block out of the forms and textures is still done with too small of a brush, which causes the picture to look too even and lack dynamism.

Your idea of a 'drawing style' is a misunderstanding of what goes into a drawing. Realism comes before style. There is no substitute for understanding what you're doing. Even simple well-made drawings are usually done by people who are surprisingly competent at drawing realistically. A style can appear to be more simple than realistic drawings, but still has to obey those rules and depends upon knowledge of the real structures and forms, to a certain extent. The rules of perspective and value always apply as well. You need to understand things before you start bending them, there's a fine line between 'stylized' and 'broken'.

You have to put the work in, there's no way around it. If you try to cut corners you will go nowhere. You'll end up like those people in the progress thread who don't improve for years and years because they can't be bothered to learn anything. Go read the sticky, and just start putting the time in. Just make it something you work on for a while every day. If you really don't care that much that you can't be arsed to put any work in at all, drawing is not for you. Drawing is fun, but it's also work. It can be a very difficult problem solving exercise, and is very demanding in terms of focus. If you're not prepared to do it right, do yourself a favor and don't bother at all. Find something you're willing to work on.

I mean there's more to anatomy than just drawing the contours of the body. I don't see the point of hiding your construction and landmarks of the body if this isn't a finished drawing because no one will be able to tell if you understand your anatomy. If you're talking about proportions then I think they most of them look a little short to me but it's still believable. Most of your figures look about 5-6 heads tall and I believe the ideal height is around 7-8.

i mean most of the key proportions are there. elbows to navel, hands to cock, 2 heads per upper leg/low leg, 3 heads for hips neck, torso, etc. also the poses were deliberatly in that i was trying to imitate figure refs from artspixelovely and do a few that were a little more complicated than 'front-view-standing-with-arm-slightly-bent'

anyways if these check out (im sure youll find a foot thats off 7 degrees that completely ruins the whole thing) i might paint a few and see how much detail i can get from memory

Your figures don't look 6 heads tall, the rest of the feedback was on point but idk what that anon was smoking.

The way you're estimating height is wrong, though. If somebody is leaning towards the camera, and you lay out the head as a flat measure on the paper, it's obviously not gonna line up. You gotta account for perspective (so your "seven" head drawing looks fine to me, but the way you calculated the height of it is wrong).

A great start! The anatomy of the head to body looks fantastic. I know drawing wings are hard, but if you can look at studies or photos. Don't be afraid to experiment with how much a pose can go. Adding a little extension, more of a movement in the pose will enhance it to look more lifelike in the photo rather than just a still life practice. Obviously, you're practicing, but it looks good. My last offer would to also look at the length of the torso; it's feeling a little short from her shoulder to ribs then from the ribs to the hips. It's also lending to the fact the curved side on the left isn't as sloped as the photo.

Hey guys, pic related is what I spent about 6 hours on.. It used to look a lot more rendered until I realized I constructed it completely wrong.

So I used the lasso tool and rearranged some parts and pretty much washed everything over with base tone again. Hit me pretty hard tbqh. This is the longest time I spent on a study.

What are your tips for preventing this kind of shit? I know now to check my proportions and lines. It seems stupid now.

I guess I was moreso asking about the 'look' that bigger brushes produce. I've always admired the studies of really accomplished digital painters, they left out the finer details but altogether it screams accuracy.
