For the love of god, I'd like some valuable input this time, as everytime I try to post a drawing that I barely manage to touch every week, no helpful criticism can be found. I want to get past this question of perspective, so I can begin to slowly advance, please. Now, does the giant crab seem properly aligned to be on top of the circular table and under the girl's elbows? I had to use a photo reference to do the crab, sadly, so it has me doubting its position.

Crab seems to be floating. Perspective is wrong. However I think that composition wise it's not smart put it below the focal point of the face. That creates a boring structure imho, since you are looking at the first coal point and then straight below it is the next thing to look at. I don't really want the crab there, LOL, but from where I had the table before, there was a clear gap between the elbows and the table, so I put the crab in to fill that. I just can't make backgrounds and settings for shit, honestly. The crab would probably have to stay, since no matter what, the table is too low to be the armrest. Would you mind doing a redline correction of the perspective, though, to help me out?

here's a quick thing while I'm here. You really need to pay more attention to colors and values. Values on the face are subtle, and highlight is not that bright nor shadow that dark. do not use grey dark colors for shadow, makes your painting look muddy. More chroma!
Cut it with the texture too, too much.

"I find bodily functions to be the perfect marriage of amusing yet arousing.
I remember once my friend tried to talk to a girl he had a crush on but she just kind of grimaced and said she couldn't talk. My bud thought he'd some how offended her when they hung out the other day and his chances with her were ruined. Having observed my older sisters soccer team during sleepovers I knew better and quietly shadowed her down the hall and sure enough she was making a beeline towards the bathroom. I "dropped" my binder and pencils on the floor 20 feet from the door and sure enough 6 minutes later she emerged with that classic glow and look of content relief on her face and I quickly sprinted to tell my bud the good news, to be honest he seemed more creeped out than overjoyed but I was correct and in two weeks they had a mutual masturbation session followed by vigorous oral sex!

Make your edges tighter, and give the eyes some focus. Edges and eyes are two things that the eyes focus on. If the eyes are muddy, you lose a bit of focus. Also, I bumped the contrast by 15 to give the eye a little clearer information, but you don't really have to.

true and false. Saturation are relative not absolute, What I meant is that for this case, you'll have to take the ambient light bouncing i up from the ground in account ( making the shadow very hot).
"Desaturate the shadow give the light part more importance" is right if you know what you are doing. After all, color is dependent on light, So if you just pick grey color for the sake of pushing the light part, you'll end up with the wrong color temperature, thus make the whole thing muddy. For starter, while it's also not absolute, the somewhat foolproof way of choosing color for shadow is make it a bit more saturated. You can try others color when you understand it enough, but for now stick to hot color for very dark ambient shadows.

You've got a few minor issues with it as is. For starters, the face is way too long, especially when comparing the distance between the eyes and the mouth. Draw the head without the helmet first if you don't see it. Second, the lighting behind the guy is splotchy and inconsistent. It looks like what it is: light values hugging the silhouette to make the figure pop out. This doesn't make a believable lighting scenario.

My biggest issue is that this currently feels like two very different paintings stitched together. Use your hand and block out the dragon, and you'll see the first painting: an iconic, cover-style painting of a dude looking badass on a rock or something. A lot of frazetta paintings are like that.

Block out the figure and only focus on the dragon, and you see a separate painting: an aerial shot of a dead dragon. This second painting is a lot more story-driven.

If this were my painting, I'd try to pick one direction and run with with it. I tried a redline fleshing out a more story-driven painting. It's crude, but hopefully you get the idea (the red is shadow, not blood). Here we see the figure from above, just like the dragon, and we see no sky. You have room to incorporate more of the dragon's body for framing. Most important you have the figure interacting with his environment: the dead dragon. Envision this as a scene from a movie, and ask yourself what happened moments before and what happens moments after this snapshot. I don't think having the figure looking at the audience works as well when focusing on a snapshot, but that doesn't mean you can't go in that direction if you want. Decide what kind of painting you want this to be, and change anything that doesn't line up with that mood.

Warning: I'm inexperienced, but maybe you will get some good from my critique:

That golden jewelry is clashing with the head/figure, it seems like it is just copy pasted on top of the original picture and not a part of it.

Also design of it seems kinda bad to me, ending of it looks like frames of glasses and you naturally want to place them on ear, not in arbitrary space above it. Moreover, a gem doesn't seem to be placed centrally on a forehead and in the nose line, seems a bit off to me as well as its perspective. Last but not least, as it is now intersection of brow with that golden wire from jewelry is IMO one of the sources of that "off" vibe the picture has.

I would focus definietly on trying to establish better perspective/volume for that golden piece , adjust design a bit so it will wrap around the head and not clash with brows and at the end think of sources of light because face seems to have different one than that golden ornament.

Again, those are suggestions of uninitiated.

>> No.2524959

>>2524855

It's hard for me to critique this one and I'm not really sure how do I feel about it. I think I have issues that you have sculpted paint in some places (nose) giving painting more volume while in others where you also should have done it (tits) paint isn't sculpted and thing is flat.

Also I would question use of edges, in places it feels there should be some gradient, in others I would like sharper transition, I don't understand why around raised hand and shoulder there's "greener" shade of blue while in the rest of the painting there's generally quite sharp transition to very dark blue.

Also excess of blue paint in the down right corner is disgusting and serves nothing.

...I like gradient of color in "horizon" though and I guess it's pretty neat that the face is drawn in yellow to show that it's illuminated (but then again, edges with the background here could be softer than instead on the hand or shoulder)

Btw I'm a n00b.

I lurk here mostly, but I know you aren't beginner, saw your progress collage and posts about what you are aiming for. Problem is though that most people, me included, can't wrap their heads around symbolism, primitivism or abstraction of any kind. If you add to this that most people recommend learning colors and how to paint "last" and don't really know art history, I can imagine that for someone who wants to paint as you do and get better - it's hard.

Thanks for sharing, I'll be observing your future work.

Well try to balance the blue in the background with her orange skin, since they're opposites it might be hard.. i don't have too much experience in palette mixing but try to mix the colors you have together to make new ones

>> No.2527019

>>2526986
>>2526999
Skin is super saturated and somewhat dark. Background is very dark and saturated. They're also opposite each other on the color wheel give or take. Lighten the background and desaturate it a bit. This will make the hue contrast less jarring, and will improve readability of the dark limbs and hair.

That would be a quick fix if you're keeping all colors flat. Ideally the background might have some nuance to it. Better still, have the background serve as your ambient light source.

>> No.2527021

>>2526986
>>2527019
And another thing to consider is if the background really needs any blue in it at all. Think about what kind of mood you want to convey, and let your palette work with that, not against it. There are a few exception cases of course, but I wouldn't worry about that yet.

Good that you're practicing from reference. You're still focusing on contour drawing instead of construction. If you don't learn to construct your non referenced drawings will always look weaker than the referenced ones. I'd recommend you work on building figures from shapes and worry about clean contours and rendering later.

Start with very simple boxes and make sure they are in correct perspective/foreshortening. Then fill the boxes with what you want to draw.

It also takes more precision because larger objects in foreshortened drawing space means a slightly misplaced line becomes a massively misplaced object.

Be aware of the fact that you can't apply standard proportions without thought when drawing foreshortening. This is obvious when you think about it but it's easy to partially slip into non-foreshortened proportions while drawing.

>>2529066
Your proportions are incorrect. Check the spacing between each feature (eyes to nose, eyes to mouth, etc.) and don't just blindly step into painting. Even a rough guideline would help and you wouldn't put in a ton of hours into fixing something that's already wrong from the beginning.
