Why wont people show their work when prompted to? I understand the ramifications that may incur by posting on /ic/ if you are successful and all so if that's the case what are you even doing here to begin with?

I mean what's the worst that can happen? Becoming the next merc_wip?

>> No.2489939

There's really no excuse not to post your work, generally speaking; you can have problems arise if you trigger a mentally ill retard with nothing better to do though. Like what happened with BBC.

I hate to defer to this awful show but this sequence is actually pretty topical

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNGZo5gn_tc

I had a conversation about these kinds of people with an anon here some time back; I used to draw at this used pawn-style store I work at regularly during the generous amounts of down time I had but an obsessive compulsive mental case has started haunting the store when I work, calling a dozen times a day and visiting for hours on end at least twice daily. I don't have the heart to tell him to kill himself or whatever so I'm basically stuck playing his psychologist. You never know what you might say or do that might cause you to become some psycho loser's singular point of interest.

I can think of two reasons. One, this is an anonymous imageboard. Associating your opinions with your art would destroy that anonymity to some extent and could lead to people getting followed around and harassed for what they said in another thread.

Second and probably by far the more common one is that some people talk shit without any idea what they're on about and would lose all credibility as soon as others realised how shit they were.

>>2489943

I agree

Although there had been occasional cases where /ic/ went out of their way to doxx certain people, 99% of the time is because they're shit

>what are you even doing here to begin with?
I mainly just shit post here. I rarely post my work and even then not my full, "real" work, usually just quick pencil sketches or something I've done for this board specifically.

Why do I come here? Well I've noticed that during time periods when I'm shitposting on /ic/ I actually make more art on my free time than when I'm keeping my distance, so the motivational effect of talking to other artsy anons must be offsetting the amount of time I lose to "unproductive" browsing of an imageboard.

This is the only way I can think of that 4chan has affected me in some positive way.

>> No.2489958

because once you set up an identity in a completely anonymous setting (except you of course) you become a target for far more than the conversations at hand or even criticisms of your work. It's simply not worth it and you can only lose from the experience because honestly whats the point of proving yourself to some anonymous strangers that are probably heavily misinformed?

who barks the loudest...

but also the fact that no matter how much better you are, the other person wont accept it. So you need a huge difference in skill to actually overcome them.

Forgot to add that even though I also sometimes give legit honest advice I also don't particularly care if someone takes that advice or not. Actually teaching people is hard work and no one's paying me to tutor anyone here.

If someone doesn't believe me on the grounds that they don't know if I'm someone qualified to give advice it's fair enough (maybe I actually am not) but I'm not going to do anything to "back" myself up.

Isn't that a bit redundant

Nearly all of the concepts we consider to be "subjective" are so only because they haven't been defined well enough.

You can't be this stupid.
Artists post on /ic/ because it's anonymous, and it lets them discuss topics and critique art as honestly and as aggressively as they want, without it ever being tied to their name. In other art communities, people need to be careful not to offend people, and will often hold back when giving critique or discussing controversial topics, in order to preserve their reputation.
This is even more of an issue on 4chan, because people will judge your art negatively if they dislike you. So if you make an unpopular comment and someone asks to see your art, that art will not be judged on its own merit, but by people's attitude towards you. If you then try to defend yourself, even more people will call you out, and your reputation is effectively destroyed.

There is no work so perfect that it cannot be criticized, to argue otherwise is to claim the existence of perfection, which at best exists in the most minimal, abstract, and boring pieces like the Black Square.

Not only that, it's not even about people who don't post their work to win the internet argument, it's people that post work to continue it. Criticizing someone for not posting their work and refusing to get caught up in some internet pissing contest is childish,

Also let's not forget that theory and application are separate. I'm sure a doctor could give excellent advice and critique on proportion and mass of your figure drawings, even if he can't couldn't draw one tenth as well.

The only people who ask others to post their work are defensive faggots who want to feel validated in ignoring the criticism they've already disregarded by the mere act of asking someone to post their work.

At this point it's just a meme and a mean spirited one that only serves to disrupt threads.

It's because they don't have any work. Example: me. Lurking since 2-3 months, shitposting and giving critique and everything regularly since a month, but the only thing I did was scribing few pages with lines and ellipses.

And yeah, I'm well aware of sticky and all core books and artists and everything.

You don't give controversial enough advice.

You need to say something like "practice 6 months painting with your dick then Pixar will hire you"

Then when prompted to post your work you wow everyone with your awesome skillz and everyone will believe you.

I'm more or less known on deviantart. Once i remember i posted mywork an asked for some thoughts. Someone made a critique about some details done wrong but i wasn't agree, something about the perspective i think. Then he/she/it started to spam replies about it and suddenly tons of people (or maybe the samefaggot) followed that path until it became a fucking burn site. I don't post anything in here since then. Why? Simple. Some faggots think that if you are known it's for anything but the quality of your work and you don't deserve that recognition and feel in the right to trample all over you. It's free after all.
