I still don't know if I'm going to paint it or just slap some simple shading just to give some extra flavor.

Probably going to paint it eventually, but not my main concern.

Thanks for feedback.

Yo.
I'm very much a beginner, only having picked up a pen to draw very recently, about a week or two ago. I draw a few times a day, but am not very good yet, but I really want to be.
I have not yet checked out Loomis' books, but I will as soon as I get the chance, since I am not very good with drawing from imagination.
This was something I drew looking from a picture online, would be great to get some critique, I already know the mouth and hair look like.. well.. horrible. But is there anything beside that I need to focus more on getting better?
I very much prefer drawing on paper with pencils, not very much interested in using programs on PC.

I love seeing that you have an interest in beginning with art, I wish you lots of luck in your artistic journey!
I think you are starting pretty well, drawing from reference is the best way. I think you should concentrate on getting the values and shading right.
Also, I wouldn't suggest that you draw too many portrats. Rather draw figures and anatomy (lots of great websites offer reference photos). Start with sketches and at first don't concentrte on polishing your artwork. Maybe even visit some sort of anatomy figure draing class once you feel like you are confident enough in your work.
In conclusion: Draw as much as you can and you'll improve a lot.
Best of luck!

Listen, anyone can get good if they do this:

1: Read Perspective Made Easy and do all the exercises.
2: Read How to Draw by Scott Robertson and do all the exercises and watch the videos.
3: Read Figure Drawing by Andrew Loomis and do all the exercises.
4: Read Drawing the Head and Hands by Loomis and do all the exercises.
5: Read Force by Michael Mattesi.
6: Read How to Render by Scott Robertson and do all the exercises.
7: Read Color and Light by James Gurney and do all the exercises.

There you go, with 4 hours of focused practice a day (don't check your smartphone every 30 seconds) this training will last a whole year or a bit more. Also you need money to buy the books and a cintiq or intuos pro and ellipse templates etc.

After you complete that just do what you want for a while, explore styles, what you like to paint and such. THEN make a list of the things you are not good at and you want to learn and get to it.

i hope what im doing isn't discouraging you from doing something similar just because the improvements aren't as vast as if I was copying photos and doing concept art. life drawing is a much slower burn.

it takes months and years to see improvements in drawings that aren't just the speed with which you do them, cause how you draw is still how you draw.

Draw a figure from imagination in an interesting pose. Clothed or unclothed is up to you.

Not only draw the figure, but compose that figure in an environment.

Scratch that, draw a multi-figured composition from imagination at full size around 20"x30" or bigger

If you can't attempt to do that, you haven't improved.

Life drawing is only there to help your proportions/construction/perspective/light and shadow rendering. Life drawing is a vital resource to help an artist understand certain principles before he/she commits to a final illustration.

Life drawing has little impact in comparison to what a fully illustrated piece can accomplish.
If you aren't pushing for anything bigger than life drawing, then you are never going to be as good as you think you'll be. You'll just be a sad gallery artist who sulks around saying "My art represents the idea of balance within a society" attaching some bullshit description because your own art can't stand for its own.

Wake the fuck up and start doing actual illustrations. Otherwise, get used to the dust.

You might as well drop the art act and get a job in engineering. You might actually attribute something to society there than what you're trying to accomplish now.

Fucking great. Photorealistic as hell. Use those skills and do some sort of still-life on a big canvas and try to get it out there. Look at the still-life work of the old masters, then try to add your own spin on things. It takes a few years, but you'll eventually probably get really well-known.

I hate to admit it but I seem to just not have a fucking clue what I'm doing.

So I drew for about a month, just working through Betty Edwards book and then stopped and now I've just tried this on a wim and it took the past couple days but I just can't figure out what else to do to improve. I'm done with this for now but still want to do a few more drawings in the future.

I don't even know how to fucking shade. I just smudge everything and redo the same part over and over and over until it looks decently right.

Is there a book that's specific to what I need to help me?

ur measurements are wrong
for example check the placement of the straws relative to the cup
look at the shape of the cup's rum as it runs into the straws, you find a smaller sort of rounded triangle
small measurement errors make everyone feel bad but it's okay as long as we progress
see if you can find the errors in the neck, eyes, eyebrows, etc

Are you supposed to measure consistently as you go along?

It'd be helpful to measure during the whole sketch imo,
I use 2h to sketch just because I find it easier to erase
Probably would've measured from the base of the nose to the top of the skull, drawn a line, and done the same across the browline from one side of the head to the other, and used this to go on to make a longer vertical center line and stuff
always helpful to measure in different ways tho, like the distance from the top of the eye to the hair or from the eye to the center line etc

Your beard has turned into a bunch of scratch. Concentrate on masses, rather than lines.

See how the beard and facial hair looks on this Sargent? I see you're paying attention to the light source, but beards can easily become symbol.

Try another drawing, but this time try to make the beard more massy.

That's probably not a opinion you have formed yourself but rather just shit that you are regurgitating from some bitter art teacher you took a few classes from.

Yeah, I love painterly brushwork too. But that's just a matter of taste. There is no universal law that states that you must work this or that way. I wouldn't have any problem with what you wrote if you suggested that he could design the shapes more by deliberate brushwork, but instead you just had to bring up that "oh just make aswell take a photograph" crap that doesn't even make any sense.

I'm pleasantly surprised you actually did this. Hopefully this piece serves as a good reference to mark where your skill is currently. Even though this piece has its problems, it stands stronger than anything else you've done because there's things for people to look at. The objects in the scene have other objects to relate to and interact with. That's what separates studies and finished pieces.

From this we can see that you have no problems putting lines to paper, which is good. There's an amount of confidence that I can appreciate. I'm glad you aren't afraid to put multiple figures in a composition and make them seem relatively sized to each other.

What I think happened, though, was that you read my challenge and got straight to work. You dove in not really thinking too much about how everything is going to be laid out. Did you do any thumbnailing? Did you do any small value compositions? You would have solved a lot of problems when it was sized small.

You seem to also have a lot of anatomy issues. It looks like you ended up guessing a lot of the time. You want to know how I can tell? The back of the left figure is waaay too crooked. Even if she was a normal hunchback, something like that would NEVER happen. There's not enough "torso" for the sitting figure. Boobs don't act like that. The sitting figure's extended arm just has a lot of bumps on it...where's the deltoid, bicep, triceps? where are the extensors and flexors? It doesn't feel like that arm is rotated. I know it's a woman so they are softer than men, but I still have no idea what's going on with that arm. It seems like you struggle with knees, hence the "space" you left where they would normally go. I have no idea how you've done those nice hand studies but completely botch up these hands. The feet are something else.
You say you're learning from life, but it's totally apparent you're just drawing down what you see and not actively trying to internalize it.

To keep critiquing...

There's no light and shadow statements. At all.
Yeah you put shadows on the figures indicating that the light source is Top Right, but if that was the case, you would have a lot more cast shadows where you haven't put any. Arms tend to cast shadows onto torsos if the arm is blocking the light, you know. The girl on the right would be almost enveloping the sitting girl in shadow except her arm. That could have been a cool moment to have, but you didn't include it since you didn't have any idea how that would look ( or maybe you didn't want to ruin anything ). That's what the small value studies are for.

Also, take the time to actually define some of the objects that these figures are interacting with. What are they holding? Staves? Rifles? Swords? Spears? Give the object volume and a reason to be there. What is the girl sitting on? A stump? Study bark texture and make sure you indicate that next time.

I'm glad you attempted an environment. Like you said, it looks the way it is because you haven't done enough studies, which is fine. But when you do these studies make sure to actually INTERNALIZE what you're looking at. Look at other artists who simplify landscapes with pencil. Look at Nathan Fowkes or James Gurney for that type of stuff.

Anyway, I can keep going but I won't.
The main problem that I keep seeing from you is that you say you're improving, but when you post your work you're posting the same stuff. It all looks the same. Why? Because you're not actively internalizing anything when you're drawing from life. Learn to construct things such as heads, arms, torsos, cars, trains, dogs, cats, bowls, diamonds, anything you can think of. Don't just copy what you're looking at, try and construct a 3d version of it on your paper, as if you were looking at a wireframe of the object in 3ds max
Perspective > Construction > Anatomy > Rendering

I'm not trying to "save you"
I'm just sick of your shit. Man up.

It's stiff and out of perspective. Face needs some work. The character design is kind of lacking. Like what is he suppose to be? Elf monk fighter? Sure bro, just make sure to have a bit more storytelling with his gear. Silhouette looks a bit funky. Try fixing his bushy pants, they make him too pear-shaped. Hair can tell a lot, try adding some sort of jewelry/ hair ties. Just make him more interesting in general. And also give it some good line weight to really pop out focal points and give a good sense of depth.

Overall, I think it is a good start. You could really learn a lot if you do some research and incorporate some more design. Good job man. Keep it up!

You're probably not the type of painter that would want to do this...but I'll say it anyway

In the photo with the actual model, look at the shadow shape. Look at the very edge where the dark meets the light. FUCKING look at it. Holy shit it's such a good saturated red. It would definitely be a missed opportunity if you didn't at least pop a saturated red somewhere at the edge between shadow and light.

There are a lot of problems with construction. The values are kind of all in the same range like your other picture but as with that one I think you can balance it by putting lighter and darker ones next to each other. As for the face well anime sometimes doesn't translate well to a more realistic look. The heart shaped face with pointed chin is especially problematic. Right now this looks like a woman with stubble because of that. You've got to reverse engineer the stylistic choices to the type of real life face it would represent, if that makes any sense.

The whole point of having a civilization is so that we can live and thrive rather than just survive for the moment. I'm not sure you need to go to the beginner's thread but personally if it were me I would start over. I find it easiest to structure a drawing in lines before starting to paint and render. There are some people who like to work in blocks of value moreso than lines and you can do that too. The key thing is to build the structure correctly, keeping it simple until your base is solid, and then begin adding detail.

This is probably dumb idea, but listen to it. I try to learn to draw, mainly i try to find like manga style tutorials, but all of them suxs, like they show basic proportion and there its done. Ok cool, but that doesnt really help me, how do i actually understand and learn to draw figures i want, because i dont know how to draw them, even if i know there proportions and i can draw straight lines it wont help me. So i had idea of just copying already drawn manga and anime pages i like. Do slight alterations to them. And i actually starting to understand the lines somewhat, how to draw them, ye i might not draw good proportions but i think just copying already good manga/anime is a lot better, then following random internet manga tutorial, which looks like shit compared to master drawing.

Something that confuses me when trying to focus on somehting to practice is how different many artists render faces. in the japanese style they often competly ignore coloring the anatomy surrounding the nose and mouth area and just work alot with lineart, making my confusion worse is that the "sketch" before i put in color / rendering often looks okayish at least not so horrible deformed like they are looking now. so should i follow more that lane?

Due to the fact that I am an anxious wreck, and I can't tell if this is the sarcastic 'blog?' meme, I don't feel confident enough to post my blog, but if this is you nosebro I think I'm already following you.

I really like that one, even though the nose is a bit flawed. One of my favorite I have seen here on this board, big fan of the chunkiness. Do you have a blog or something?
