How do you get your drawings to look like the stuff in these sketchbooks? I don't know where to put lines for anything and my drawings look like 5 year olds.

I see these drawings and see different line thickness and lines that aren't connected in some places, but I have no idea how to do any of that. Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm an uncreative person who really wants to draw.

This is the only picture I have saved on my computer that I drew in a lined notebook middle school style, and it's an anime style video game character (kill me).

Well, step one would be to buy a sketchbook. It doesn't necessarily need to br expensive, but the orientation anf binding is kind of a peeve for some people.
Step two is to simply git gud; or rather, practice gettin' gud. There are a myriad of ways to achieve this, but the number 1 method is to draw something every day. More importantly, draw a /better/ looking thing every day. Ask questions and be specific, show examples, observe shit.
This is my general advice for a general question.

>> No.2439180

>>2439140
Check out the sticky, take classes, read books on the subject.

Start with simple construction (like Loomis) and basic 1&2 point perspective.

With line weight the basics are thicker/darker lines at things in the front, and thinner/lighter in the back.

The thing with lines not connecting is about trusting the brain to do it for you. This usually means you have to create an implication for where the line should be, either by using the rest of the shape, or by leaving it up to the person viewing the art to have prior knowledge about the object or shape you are drawing.

Do you guys balance multiple sketchbooks, or doy you find it better to draw in one?

Since the only sketchbooks I can find are like 12-15 pages I tend to have several, one for regular drawing/doodles and the other for life drawing.

Simply telling someone they're "mediocre" is not critique, retard. You need to point out the flaws, but I guess you can't because you don't have the eye for it.

>> No.2449675

>>2449662
I start off with "mediocre" to capture your attention, and it worked.

As for analysis, I offered the reference pictures for you to see. And I stated the reason as to why you liked it despite the anatomical flaws and errors in copying.

The figure in >>2448644 is rigid, blocky and not very well proportioned. Notice how he left out faces and hands because he can't integrate them into the whole body yet, at his level. As for the face >>2449620 you can see what happened to the jawline of the guy when he tried to draw the beard but couldn't. The eyes are pointing in the wrong directions and the plane of the face is off. The nose is flat on one end and not the other. "Economy of lines" in this case is what he used to excuse how he didn't know where to finish. The folds of the left eyes are well done. You can tell he started there. The 2nd face, I'm not even going to comment on that.

>>2449103
Suffers from the same issues of compartmentalization. They're unfinished and not very well integrated. The planes of the body don't match up. He was lucky that his bad proportions ended up the way they did, accidentally accentuating the hips. Maybe that's the only part he's studied so far.

on the first figure I was more focused on drawing the 3 larger masses because I'm still having a little trouble with feeling the form and twisting and pulling things, that's why I left out hands/arms/legs/feet. these are just sketches, I was trying to do the soft/hard edge thing and left out major masses of the same value untouched intentionally (like the guys beard and hair) just added more detail in parts where there's high contrast, but I still have to practice that a lot more so I can get better lines and handle of my pen.

Quite promising (especially the page on the left) however I feel you're approaching eyes wrongly which spoils the drawings. I love the small sketch on the left page of an old man from the side wearing glasses. Just try focusing on the positions of the facial features and the general structure of the face.

You're probably long gone from thos thread but I thought I'd ask anyway.

How much thought is there when you're doing something like this? Do you just think "robots at a farmers market" one day then decide to draw it at a few angles? Or is there kind of a process of ideation and the result of that is "robots at a farmers market"? If so would you mind sharind said process?

it's actually for my (potential) thesis film at the college i'm attending. i wanted to do an idea about a robot helper that's advertised as being so independent it could find it's way from the factory to your house with just a map, but it ends up getting lost and has to work odd jobs to get money for bus fare or something like that. the film would be too long to get done in ~6 months, i feel, so i cut it down to an old robot cleaner that gets bought by a family farm and is put to work as a farmhand instead of a maid. he would feel really out of place until they go to sell their product at the farmers' market and he sees a bunch of other robots re-purposed like he was. the story... is still a work in progress, lol.

so this is just me working out how the market part might look. i feel it looks too much like a regular farmers' market with robots randomly thrown in so i want to amp up the sci-fi a bit, but still make it look kind of old-school and farm-y. i want to get more specific with the robot designs too, so that they look more like they were re-purposed from whatever they were meant to do as well.

i used to try doing the whole "think of a random idea and draw it" thing, even using random situation generators, but it was always kind of lame. at the school i'm attending, we're taught mostly to be storytellers and actors first and to draw things to support our stories. i'm not really much of a writer, but having something specific to design and draw for is definitely a lot more fun and interesting, and it makes for more convincing illustrations too, i feel. if you have any ideas for stories that haven't really gone anywhere, spend some time developing them and draw out a few scenes. they don't have to be climactic or anything, just simple illustrations that have a sense of story to them. just putting something down will help you see what needs more development and what changes you might want to think about (eg. more sci-fi in my case).
