>Trying to get better at light&shadow.
Are you guessing where to put the light and where the shadows fall? Your eye can't develop if you don't try to actively seek to understand light. You have to take real life or well-lit things and place it as an example against your image in order to understand what you're doing wrong. Also, your forms and lights are being lost, likely because you're painting over top of them. Don't erase the shadows you create. If you must paint over top of them, then paint over top of them again afterwards to keep shadow. Be mindful of what you're doing anon, you'll never improve if you just zone out and go into autopilot.

The head is huge. Overall your proportions are pretty off, like the hands and feet are too small too, and her legs are too short. horrible composition and colour balance. Start from the symmetry and weight, everything is in the middle and those are squeezed by rocks(?). Very strong lines are pointing towards girl.

Those lights from flying things, they make a really strong and disturbing composition. Perspective destroys depth and your lights are everywhere. Whole lower half is opposite colours, you need to refine your palette and add contrast. Lacks all the whites and blacks.

But good that you made a whole picture. Now just try something else and learn from this.

hey, like the other anon said, there's a lot of empty space on the right side which could easily be filled up with the dragon. the figure's placement is also a little weird here, you've shoved him straight into the corner! giving him a little breathing room would help the composition i feel, and it would get rid of the nasty tangents his staff and feet are making with the edge of the painting.

here's my take on it. i tried to use the bridge and the rocks in the composition too, to try and pull attention to the dragon. i wasn't sure if i should spotlight the figure in the foreground or leave him in shadow, but it might be something to think about.

Dragon-and-monk OP here and not that anon but, from a technical standpoint he probably just used the lasso tool to cut of the dragon and the rocks it was standing on to separate it from the rest of the picture in order to avoid putting the two main subjects on the same side of the painting.

I like the colors a lot, but there's a few major things differentiating from the reference.

The first thing is his hand and the mug. It looks like you just kinda winged that and didn't reference it as much. The mug doesn't look like ceramic, his hand is in a different position, and there's no shading on his sleeve / the sleeve looks almost skin tight.

Second, he looks sad in your pic, but perplexed in the reference. This isn't too big a deal really but since it's a study it's something to make note of. His nose looks a tiny bit bigger / fatter in your pic too.

Those are really just the glaring faults, everything else is pretty minor and should be practiced, like rendering the clothing especially. I think the skin looks fine in that style, but if you were aiming for a lot of realism you should try to render that too.

But after ripping that apart, I have to say I still like it a lot. You captured the idea of his face very well and got his important features like the hair, jawline, and eyes. Good taste, anon

you shouldve just made her hand bigger. dont stick to ref if it looks unnatural. remember that lines are tricky. eyes look at what's contained within them. they are a weird divider. you want your lines to be just on the outside of what they are describing, not on the inside or in the middle. that might not make a big difference when you are doing large forms like her body but for fingers it makes so much difference. especially in small drawings.

Pretty sure i fucked it up, main thing i want to point out is related to composition. Try to make it so that most of the objects in the scene points or directs the eye towards your focal point, in this case being the dragon im guessing.

Basically you pull apart the reference to have something as basic as possible, reduce it to large chunks (or blocks), that you fill in on the canvas. Then you define them more precisely but that isn't the exercise. You should be able to make something loosely look like hair before even trying to render.

Go to the beginner thread, they're used to giving advice on this shit. But I'll tell you off the bat the first response you'll get is to stop symbol drawing.
Look at your eyes - do you think eyes look like that?
The eyelids wrap around a sphere. Learn how to draw a sphere, then learn how to wrap something around it, and you'll start getting an idea. Think more about the forms than the features themselves.

Here's a good one too. When painting really think about how much value range you have in your picture. Practice with this exercise to get you in the mode of thought: Make a small frame with your index fingers and thumbs and frame something in your field of view. Now a basic tidbit for you to think about is that every thing we see can be separated into one of three value ranges. These are White Grey and Black. You can have lighter values of white and darker values of white, same with grey same with black.
Now, looking through that frame study what you see and identify what elements would be white grey or black.
When you're painting you must keep this in mind otherwise your picture will wind up looking muddy and flat. If I look at the thumbnail of your picture all I see are a medium grey background and a slightly lighter grey blob. I don't see black and I don't see white.

Really try to separate your picture into these three values and have clearly defined "blocks" of value. For instance, the woman's neck in your picture could be black. And you could have variation of lighter black and darker black to add depth to it but looking at the picture at arms length you should still be able to read the image well and that means you have to use large blocks of value ranges. But also the farther you zoom in the more variation in those values you should see.

Tldr I dunno, keep painting
