FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email lava@lavaflake.com.

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

the problem that I have with the tribunal is that I draw shit stuff for an hour, then I draw something cool and post it. That piece might not look like 30 min to someone, but I drew certainly more than 30 minutes daily.

Put a barrier between you and your addiction that would be a large enough hassle to bypass to make you do the work instead. For example, I've wasted loads of time on the internet, so I've setup a personal server to act as a dns filter for my network, forcing me to do work. While I could get around it, the effort is enough for me to either come back to my senses and do the work, or simply let laziness take hold and do the work as its typically the easier task. Put a real barrier between you and your addiction, the only other substitutes are social contracts and willpower (but you may be under the discipline threshold to make improvements on it, so the other two choices are more effective)

Winning isn't the point, focus on improving. But there's nothing stopping you from being the last artist if everyone else fails. And there's an unofficial 6 hour group, but I doubt anything like that will ever be made official, because the point is that almost everybody can spare at least 30 minutes to draw. Most people do at least an hour, though, and many do several hours.

If there's going to be an incentive for voting correctly, and there's a bias toward pardoning, wouldn't people just want to pardon everyone unless it's an extremely obvious punishment like cheating? I feel like having no incentive would make people more honest, I don't think there will be trouble in getting us to vote since there's been a lot of interest in catching cheaters/slackers. And most people enjoy voting on things. I think if there's an incentive, people may try to guess what LAS's collective opinion will be, rather than deciding solely upon their own opinion of the submission.

Yeah I played around with rewarding correct votes but I was afraid it'd cause exactly what you described so I figured it'd be better to reward participation and maybe lock out the punish/pardon spammers. How well you vote may or may not affect how much your vote counts for but I'll need to test that to see if it causes a super user effect.

This is why I favor mercy. There's literally no point in eliminating others if they aren't cheating. A warning may encourage some to work harder, but to most beginners it would probably be discouraging.

his books are like a buffet of art knowledge. There's a little bit of everything and none of it is the best but it's all pretty good. It's probably best to start with Successful Drawing but it'll leave you wanting more. I'd say the best Loomis book to start with is Scott Robertson's How to Draw

I'd say that he could have spent a lot of time refining and undoing-redoing the lines, but that hair looks really rushed, even for a beginner, the lines are very loose. And the fact that he's drawing on a smartphone makes me suspicious, too. Maybe he didn't have computer access all day, but still, that seems like something where you'd have a bit of waiting time when you're out and just quickly doodle something for LAS. He could have at least cropped the image or drawn on paper and photographed it, I can't imagine drawing with your finger is good at all.

The rules don't state that it has to look like an experienced artist's 30 minutes. It's just to draw for 30 minutes. Personally I would pardon that image if the person's other work showed a lack of skill, even though it looks bad and most of us could do better in a few minutes, it's lined, colored, and shaded. The light source doesn't make sense or describe the form well, but shading is usually tricky for inexperienced kids. And they probably did it with a mouse, since there's no pressure and the lines are kind of jerky and stiff. So in short, it looks awful but I remember stuff like that taking me ages when I just had Oekaki, a mouse, and my shitty preteen ability.

Think about the environment of the planet it's on, and what challenges it needs to overcome. High/low gravity, high/low temperature, how does it get water (assuming it still needs it for its chemical reactions), how does it take in the necessary gases from the atmosphere, is it terrestrial, aquatic, subterranean, or even permanently airborne, etc. Consider how an organism could evolve to meet these challenges. It's actually a bit of a pain to add that since for security reasons the database accounts don't have access to DELETE for security reasons. I'd have to setup this whole system with checks to see if a vote has been invalidated by the user, either that or add a 3rd vote option that isn't tallied which means I'd have to go back and change a bunch of code.
