I was playing Xenoblade Chronicles X and realized how little creative most people are when it comes to designing aliens.
Most of them are just humans with alien features which is really gross considering how much freedom designing an alien gives you.

Don't forget, aliens or really any designs you see in commercial products have other motives besides creativity, they're trying to turn a profit. A big game studio would rather "play it safe" and just give you snake tits than allow an artist to create a truly unique looking design and risk it being lost on the viewer. The average consumer and pencil pusher at a company like what's familiar, people who want something really different is niche by comparison. If you want to see that kind of thing though, you could probably find it better on tumblr or patreon, places where artists have more freedom.

Wasn't sure whether to ask this here or in the beginner thread.

The average person is 7.5 heads tall and the ideal is 8 heads tall. I've been checking several porn artists and most draw adult women at around 7 heads tall; that is, lower than average rather than higher.

I guess this is because rather than wanting to depict an imposing figure most want to draw women with neoteny (child-like) features. Is that right?

To be fair, XCX is going for more of a space opera approach (plus a big part of the plot is "man, this planet and everything surrounding it is just a bunch of unexplainable nonsense and coincidences"), but yeah, even in Space Dandy, where each species was designed by a separate artist, so many were humanoid, bipedal aliens. The familiar human-like aliens are just more approachable and guarantee boners outside of niche groups, so it makes sense to stick to the same design as >>2321086 stated.

Don't cut the hand out of the frame at the wrist. It hurts the composition and it kind of gives an impression that you don't want to draw hands. Ideally, don't leave any limb out of view at any of the joints.

What do you mean by "good"? Good enough to start selling my stuff? I thought I was good enough 5 years ago already. And I actually started making a living off of it. Then after 2 years of complacent stagnation I discovered porn comics and how hard it was to create more demanding content. In 2-3 years I improved more than I did in the past 10 since I started drawing more seriously.
So to answer your question more broadly. How much time do anyone needs to get good? There's no universal answer imo. It simply depends on how much are you willing to devote yourself to get better based on your talent. And by devotion I mean trying to get out of your comfort zone by drawing stuff you might find impossible to draw at your current level.

Yeah, what sucks is that, at the end of the day, it's the shitty western artists that make the best looking feet with the most variety. Like toe spreading, wrinkles, high arches, toe scrunching, etc. Artists that focus ALL their attention on JUST drawing feet, but literally everything else looks like shit. Yeah, to be honest. Like, his art is quite good, but the feet just aren't nearly expressive enough for me. I'd be cool if we started a foot thread, dedicated to getting better at drawing feet, but I doubt people would respond well to that. Too often do people ignore things like how the toes bend, and how they conform to the ground they're standing on top of. I also almost NEVER seen people correctly draw the soles transition to the top of the foot correctly, nor have I seen anyone have knowledge of how the tendons work in the foot. All this stuff you're more likely to find from a "fine artist" than a porn artist.

I guess not everyone agrees with me on this, but I heavily believe in order to draw well, stylized or not, you have to be able to draw realism, to some degree at least. From there you can exaggerate features and play around with proportions, as it'll still be based on fundamental knowledge you get when drawing from life, learning anatomy, still life and the like.

There are a lot of shortcuts you're free to take, like keeping your anatomy knowledge on a level where you can block out of a human's primary muscle groups in simple shapes. But skipping fundamentals, anatomy, perspective and just everything that isn't included in cartoony/anime drawing you'll always have trouble creating anything interesting, atleast from what I've seen.

Pieces don't have to be very complicated, but basic fundamental knowledge applied can really carry you a lot further very quickly. Picture related from an /a/ drawfag - it's simple but I really like it just because of the interesting angle, it's nothing advanced, but obviously something that's been studied outside of the artists interest in drawing cute anime girls.

with Thomas Fluharty on Schoolism? They basically give you an idea as to what you should be doing when breaking things down into shapes.

This is wrong in a lot of places. The main problem is you didn't establish a perspective which the pose would follow throughout the entire illustration. This results in a broken neck, hands and feet not being planted on the ground, unaligned extremities and torso bent into a fisheye lens. You aren't good enought yet to be able to construct just from memory. Next time first set the space your character is going to be placed into, and then construct your pose based on that space.
