I made one for the end of the year, but may as well post it.
Given how often people get shit on in these threads I'm expecting the worst. Quality is a little inconsistent but my baseline is at least better, I think.

tfw some of my favourites were in May.

Your line confidence has gotten immensely better (the banana-man and mech especially) but you really need to work on your overall anatomy, especially arms. Also try doing different angles and (horizontal?) poses for portraits/figures because nearly all of them are static 3/4ths busts. Focus on sketching for fluidity and experimentation instead of rendering for a week or two, as well.

Keep it up! You're steadily improving.

I'm bad at drawing every day but it's still the ideal. Usually once I get in the mood I can go for 3 or 4 hours, I'll skip a day now and then or have days where I only draw for like an hour but now and then I do days where I draw all day, too.

This seems to be a feature of this board that seems stupid me. /ic/ constantly slaps these bizarre expectations for progress as if there's some objective metric for where you should be in a given amount of time. And the most people ever seem to give for their metric is "I saw x person reach x point really fast."

After you get the fundamentals down it becomes subjective extremely quickly. People also seem to think that it's a steady increase from start to finish, despite the fact that the improvement in the first year or so will inevitably be the most radical because you've got so much to learn that can improve what you're doing. After that you hit a point of diminishing returns and either slowly refine your fundamentals or start stylizing and developing your preferred approach.

I'm telling you that once you hit a certain point with fundamentals "good" becomes very subjective to define. You might have a point if someone's posting their same sonic fanart after 5 years which we've all seen, but once the fundamentals are covered it's a different ballgame for progress.

What do you consider 3 years worth of objective progress? Have you done it? Is this what you consider what the average person can attain, or the ideal? Are you going to post some Ruan Jia shit and say everyone should hit that level in 3 years? What's the checklist? Surely there's a criteria. If you don't have any formula and are going solely on your opinion, who fucking cares?
I'm willing to bet all you're going to do is take some artist you like and post it, and go "he should be like this." because that's all anyone does when they say "bad progress for 3 years."
At the best you can say "I don't like where you went with it" but if you don't have a metric, that's just your shitty unfounded opinion.

my progress is pretty shitty and I'm disappointed how much time flew by where I could've been practicing, anyway here's a snapshot of my year, I didn't really catalogue everything but I was mega bad at the start of the year when I started my journey.

for next year I reaaally need to take something, anything to completion, but I've got some savings and entering a part time job next year, where I will endeavor to fill time with study.

cheers all. happy 2016.

I'm pretty scattered with my more finished work since I scrap so many sketches/ideas, and I guess it wasn't the best idea to post a big jumble of random things that I produced that I liked at the time.
The 2 full paintings at the top were for the AP art portfolio, so I definitely tried and made them as best as I could. That's both true and untrue. You can still benefit from loathsome work, though yes, if you like it. it will go in way easier and you're more likely to internalize it.

The problem is you have to find your rhythm, find music you like to hear or play little games with your exercises, such that you do feel like you can make things you like to look at or like thinking about.

A spoonful of sugar etc etc etc

There is tons of overlap actually. The mental fatigue and self-doubt affects athletes as sure as it does an artist. The real difference between artists and athletes are that athletes are high test and don't have emotional baggage and suffer from nihilism like artists seem to.

most people who are real artists in traditional media would kill to be able to do life drawings as well as you. Seriously, don't listen to weaboos, listen to people who might read Drawing Magazine or some equivalent tome. Great work.

What are you practising?
You'll hit slumps but if you keep going you get to experience the satisfaction of breakthroughs. I can't speak for everyone but in my experience my artistic progression seems to go on a regular cycle of no improvement/discouragement to sudden bouts of "oh wow I really like this piece." and my baseline just seems to ratchet up a little. Usually it's after I get so tired of everything looking the same that I experiment a bit.

No one criticized his life drawings, he's already pretty good with rendering and observation, but still bad with basic construction, composition, anatomy and gestures when drawing without a reference.

That happens because he is too focused in landing massive amount of details, ignoring the basic things that make a picture look correct.

If he practice gestures, anatomy and composition, his work will come to life.

Why are you telling that to other responders instead of to the artist himself?

And to say that there's been an improvement is simply a fact. That doesn't mean there isn't still a long way to go, so you're perfectly right to bring up these points. But there's no need to be a dick about it, or address people in the third person.

Disregard progress, you're not reaching for a destination. Just approach it with a genuine curiosity for how things work, and revel in every little 'aha' along the way.
Stay pumped with music, observe the pomodoro technique, make it a habit.

Observing your own progress is an indulgence for way down the line when you've put in enough months of practice to actually show some. You don't weigh yourself every day when you're trying to get fit, it takes time.

I think it's important to keep in mind that athletes have a default level of removal from their 'work' that artists usually don't. A lot of people don't think of the self as the body. They think 'I' am 'in this body', 'I control this body', etc. So when you're working out, it's easier to see it as if you're dealing with an outside source. Art, on the other hand, relies heavily on how you see (not the eyes, but the mind, how you perceive). You wrangle your own perception, rather then an 'outside' force like your physical body, in an attempt to communicate something to the world. To create something entirely new, rather then improve upon something.

They're not crazy-different imo. Both require discipline, hard work, and dedication. Seems like the best athletes have to have a deep understanding of their minds too. But you don't have to understand how you perceive the world to successfully run a mile, and the goals are clear and defined. 'Lift more weight', 'faster time', 'going farther', etc. Artists don't have that. It's an important difference (and probably why artists struggle with emotion/mental problems more then others).

Also thanks for linking those vids. I meant to watch that watts vid ages ago but never got around to it. I enjoyed it.
