Why wouldn't you believe it? I've met several amateur artists over the years who put those kinds of hours into single images. Usually it's a case of them not recognizing diminishing returns or them not knowing what they are doing and keep changing things or being indecisive. Spending 100 hours does not automatically make your art good.

It's good to force yourself to draw, but you shouldn't hate it all the time. Draw stuff that you like doing or do a mindless doodle sometimes to keep the seriousness off.

Make sure to mix in actual pieces. There's studying theory, there's practical study to apply it, and those are really important. But the REAL application comes when you're actually working on your own stuff. And when you're actually excited about what you're doing, you'll feel it all clicking into place.

Smoking weed has different reactions to different people. For me, I played around with smoking while starting a piece, which IMO is the hardest part. Sometimes it can help get things moving without over thinking it, which I think is critical when starting something new.

I can't say it helps beyond that. When it comes to fleshing things out more, being high is a detractor. I lose focus on the things that need to be done to progress the drawing, and tend to get more distracted.

This is coming from someone who doesn't enjoy smoking a lot.

This used to be me before I started taking art seriously. Every drawing or painting I did I hated. Then, after a few months of drawing every day, I drew something I actually liked. Never felt that before. 8 months later and I like most of my work, and I am making some pretty decent money from commissions and prints. Also I decided to skip this semester and am putting in about 10 hours a day, which is easy, because I am always working on a commission so I am actually getting paid to get better.

>>2307082
It should feel like homework, but you should still enjoy it as a challenge. Don't just mindlessly "study." Give yourself goals and challenges. I almost never drew vehicles and machines, so once a week I would find a bunch of references and take notes/copy ideas from really good work, then spend a few hours applying those notes to drawings and finishing one or two. Did the same for things like anatomy and perspective. I took a sketchbook with me everywhere, so between classes or when drinking with friends at a bar it was life drawing time.

>>2307471
There have been a few times when all I do in my free time is watch tutorials or discussions between professional artists. Threw away trying to have a love life. Steam has sat unopened for months. Up until 3am drawing and my drawing arm is starting to spasm from fatigue, and I get this really sick feeling in my stomach because I put so much into getting better and I still suck. Almost have tears in my eyes because I feel like I'm trying so fucking hard and I am getting nowhere, and no one around me has any fucking clue how much work it takes and you can't just go around telling people that you almost cried like a little bitch because of ART. So I choked that shit back and just kept going because I realized that it is 100% up to you, and only you to get it, and even if you do cry like a sensitive bitch, no one is going see it. The only thing they care about is if your work is good, so just keep fucking going.

is right, but i'll try to explain this in a nicer and more thorough way because i keep having to reiterate this for friends:

the joke image you made is instantly appealing to much more people because it's designed to be quickly digested along with instantly conveying a positive emotion (laughter) in a way that people like sharing (laughter is communal, even on the internet).

the type of person who enjoys a well made and thoughtfully crafted illustration is a lot rarer than someone who enjoys jokes.

jokes (or anything that seems to be much more popular than your finished work) can bring eyes tho, and sometimes they stick, so don't discount the rampant popularity of seemingly low effort work. until then, keep grinding and improving your illustrative skills [field of dreams quote]
