To give this thread some substance, I guess I'll add a rule to say what makes these pictures your goals. I love the mix of practical clothing design and exaggerated fashion going on in these pieces. The matte cuts mixed with the camo patterns and the complex but practical webbing and suspenders make for a plausible but stylish take on modern military garb.

When I can paint as cool looking paintings as Masahiro Ito (Silent Hill) I guess I have met my goals. His digital paintings look so gritty and messy and like the looks so much. Of course I don't want to copy his style completely but I really like them and comparing they are not impossible tech wise

I'm a huge fan of Dan Chavezs work. More of painting guy myself but him and sparth got me into linework and solid drawing. Which I've recently come to learn is 50 times more important for CA viscom type work than painting... which is kind of obvious but when you grow up in the /ic/ bubble ...

>Which I've recently come to learn is 50 times more important for CA viscom type work than painting... which is kind of obvious but when you grow up in the /ic/ bubble ...
That's because most of /ic/ is interested in illustration more than visdev. The top digital idols are Jaime, Mullins, and Ruan, all of whom are painters more than designers. The work they do is mostly illustration/promo/keyframes or is more along the lines of mood and colour sketches than things like character design.

Does it? Marko has more dynamic qualities in the pose and structure and shapes. I feel Marko also has more emphasis on the individual small designs, like he will put a lot of effort into small straps and satchels and the boots and stuff, and that's not really evident here. The value use is VERY Wes looking. The foreshortening on the leg and the way the gun is handled and the general draftsmanship though makes it clear it's neither of them though.

Are you stupid? It's universally accepted that pretty, aesthetic people are far more difficult to draw than fat, ugly ones. Ugly leaves a lot of room for randomness and mistakes. Beauty standards require perfect accuracy because the slightest mistake is instantly noticed. Any artist who can draw beautiful people can easily draw ugly ones.

Drawing a beautiful, thin, muscular person is like drawing a tight industrial design, whereis drawing a fat, ugly person is like drawing clouds or rocks.

It's not the goal of a noob. It's a totally valid style and way of working.

IC is a retarded place to come and debate the merits of style. 99% of the retards on here are below beginner level and the only work they look up to is either ultra rendered Mullins or ruan jia style stuff. Despite what the idiots on here try and feed you there are tons of working artists using many varied styles. Especially in the concept world where you wouldn't be asked/have time to render out your work for most stuff.

Just draw however you like and what appeals to you. If you want to do this as a job some day you're going to be spending a lot of time working and you don't want to be forcing yourself to draw/paint in a style you hate. It'll show in your work. Focus on learning to draw well, once you can do that you can work however you like and you'll get work if you can produce quality stuff.

Take this >>2296520 moron for example. He can't even see the diff between >>2296147 and mercwip guy. I wouldn't be taking advise from him. Honestly, go study. Who gives a flying shit if merwip guy "gets work", you aren't.

I am thinking of the sense "oh this anon is totally just doing it to put himself on a pedestal".

But my attraction towards Zorn for example is not only that he is a great painter who is a master of being complex through simplicity. But also because he draws women the way he likes them and it feels like he enjoyed doing just that. It's a thing notable in Japanese illustrators as well.

If you want to put it in pseudo speculation from a basement dweller, it's like they are not afraid to show what attracts them to the beauty of women, inviting us to take part and share their love for the other sex. Which ends up making the painting attractive in a personal matter.

tl;dr: Through dick, unity.

And the rest are the usual Sargent, Sorolla, etc. master painters. Plus Saturnino Herrán and a few contemporary painters like Soey Milk and Benjamin Bjorklund. Largely all for their portraiture and the softness they bring to unequivocally solid and 'real' figures.

>>2299198
Does a lot of fanart that is fucking elevated by the editorial illustrative look. It's ridiculous how effortless they make all their work look. Very solid line economy on even their smallest doodles.

I'm more of a fan of this specific piece than the artist themselves but dang these colors. I want to be able to paint subjects that aren't cute girls like this and in a traditional medium.

>>2299204
Very pleasing mix of stylization and realism in their portraiture. They're very good at rendering textures like leathers and leaves. Also there's an unsettling atmosphere to nearly all their paintings (colors or style maybe?). I love that sort of mood and how it leaves a lingering feeling.

>>2299205
I'm really getting into American mid-20th century pulp illustrations. It's largely the colors and lighting. Very dramatic. This specific piece also has that weird foreboding mood going on with the cold shade of red everywhere, but still nice eye-candy with how soft the painting is.

Not him, but that level of skill is really all I need to achieve a much more meaningful goal, to me at least.

Firstly, I just want to become a concept artists to make money and live, among other things, but even getting there is hard. I can't even really tell where I am, but I've been practicing and drawing for maybe 8 months now, since I got serious about improving.

The biggest challenge I have is just finishing a damn thing, and doing shit digitally is just fucking abysmal to me.
A simple front view portrait line sketch in my usual style takes me like 10-20 minutes to do on paper, but doing something similar on my tablet will take me hours, and that's assuming I have the will to finish it after dumping that much time into it.
Literally, banging my head against a brick wall, but I really can't stop since it's all I want to do.

Pic Related is my goal. Kuvshinov Illya, Paul Kwon, Sakimichan, anyone of the sort. I want to be able to do what they can do, so that I can complete a different life goal, and get better from there.

>> No.2299472

>>2299466
I think the thing you're lacking are shortcuts.
If you have seen how these people do their art, then you'll easily see that they use a LOT of shortcuts to finish their work as fast as they can.

But if you're having problems with such simple things as a front portrait, then there is not much you can do except for tanking through the process. If it takes you 10 mins to do it now, your goal should be that'll take you 5 mins next month.

About the concept artist thing: I don't know how much you know, but the job will most likely not going to include producing art like the pic you posted. You just have to get an idea across.

Oh, and I can really relate to the struggle of using tablets. I had to get myself a cintiq to actually be able to use a drawing tablet, since I couldn't work with an intuos or similar devices.

>> No.2299473

>>2299472
>About the concept artist thing: I don't know how much you know, but the job will most likely not going to include producing art like the pic you posted. You just have to get an idea across.

Oh I know. What Kuvshinov Illya and Sakimichan do are full illustrations, not simple concepts.
I just want to do concepts as a job if I can. I love doing character art, portraits, clothing and armor designs. I want to get into environments, but that's a whole different beast.

I'm not really sure what you mean by short cuts through. I've looked at the process these and other artists go through when making their illustrations. I've been trying to follow along and have had... varying degree's of success.

I recently just sold my cintiq 12hd and bought an Intuos 5 medium. I actually really like it. It seems to work better for me, since I would never use the LCD screen on my cintiq, and when I did, it always fucked up my color correction and lowered my screen resolution.

Something else I think goes under-appreciated on /ic/ is stepping stones. Achieving the level of Kron or PK is enough to have companies actually start taking you seriously, and like you said will open lots of doors and, what I think people miss, more opportunities to learn. If you can get to that level, you can work towards an even higher level. Just because it's a goal right now doesn't mean you're beholden to it for the rest of your life, I don't know why people automatically assume you'd ever stop at any point you might reach. To me it makes way more sense to set mini goals along the way to make steady progress instead of setting your sights on The Cistine Chapel from day one and feeling miserable every time you don't shit gold. I would love to be on the same level as them, because it would mean I'm that much closer to being even better. I feel like I'm not far off though, just a little more practice with render and color.

>> No.2299483

Color is a bit far off for me right now.
I can do decent line art on paper, but doing even line art digitally is just a crap shoot. Like I said, Abysmal. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong, but I would love nothing more than to learn.

Still trying ever day, still feeling like shit for not shitting gold.

>> No.2299485

What I mean by shortcuts is that illustrators will use hair brushes for bangs, use perspectives that hide some parts of the character, simultaniously showing what's important about said character.
They will abstract certain aspects and use filters to polish them etc..

If you're about designing clothing/armour/characters then learn some basic poses, if you don't know any look at PKs deviant, he has concept art on there, try to design skins/alternative versions of characters.

Try to get a LOT of refrence you can work from. Knowing what has been designed is a key point if you want to design something completely new. You gotta develop workarounds for your problems, use shortcuts and make your art sharp and direct.
That's the key to professionalism.

I was having the same issue with not seeming to adapt well to drawing with my tablet, I didn't know what the hell was wrong with me. Randomly one day though someone on /v/ of all place mentioned that you can change the tip feel of your stylus in the tablet settings, and he said the lowest setting lets you get nice, loose lines. When I very first tried it, I didn't notice much difference, then I really started noticing it and it wasn't working out so I went back to the middle settings but that seemed to be somehow worse than before. Now though all of a sudden it seems to have clicked, and I've been drawing digitally like never before, even my paintings have been better, and this has all been within a couple weeks. If you haven't messed around with that, I really recommend it.

Anyways, lets discuss the finer points of pop-culture on another board some other time.

For now, lets get back to our artistic goals.

As much as I like PK's style, I'm not really one to draw NSFW stuff for indulgence's sake. That's pretty much why I decided to learn from Ilya instead. His art is much more modest.

Still, PK's stuff is good, and I'm on my way.

Whether it proves that Pikachu is more popular or not, all the better for you, then you'll know which path to follow to market whatever you're trying to create, although judging by your attitude I don't think you're gonna get very far. Secondly I didn't switch, I said "and whoever else" as in "etc" as in whatever characters you think are most appropriate to ask about so I don't have to sit there and write an entire list. A pretty basic concept, I think.

Maybe this sounds shitty, but I think maybe I never aspire to be like artists like this because I don't think I could. Even if I could learn to do it physically, I don't see myself having that kind of patience, at least not for one image. If I spend a long time on something I'd want it to be a comic, so that I keep moving on to new images, even though collectively I may be spending a long time on it. That is a beautiful piece though.

I prefer to think in terms of plans instead of goals.
Anyway:
1. Build a habit of studying 3 hours a day.
2. Learn how to render like on pic related in next 3 weeks, by studying Robertsons "How to Render".
3. Go through all the videos on Ctrl+Paint (+ premium content) and learn basics of colour theory with "Color and Light" and "Imaginative Realism" before 15 of February, 2016.
4. Start building my own fanbase on porn sites and get my first 50$ (cumulative) from commissions before September 2016.
5. Make a patreon account popular enough to earn 400$/month, so I can quit my job. I think I should be able to achieve it before September 2017.
6. Draw, play games and masturbate all day, every day.

Admittedly, I like the colors in it a lot too. Still, there are other sources of inspiration. I don't know how you feel about anime, there are a lot of Japanese artists who make great use of color while also keeping up with strong fundamentals though. Just something to consider. This is from Casshern Sins. I'm the worst at thinking up recommendations off the top of my head, I'm sure you can get some great lists of fundamentally strong artists who use color well here though.

Inb4 furry trash, I'm not exactly sure what I want my subject matter to be, but the renamon painting is just for the painting aspects itself. I'm starting to look into rendering and color while I've been experimenting with what kind of subjects I want to focus on, including lewd. I'm unsure of whether or not I want to do more humans, and realistic looking artwork on a professional level or to do porn. I like both honestly, and right now my goal is to have the ability to do both, not so much settle into one subject or the other, mostly because I lean towards rule 34 and I like aliens more than anything, hence the left pic.

Anyway yeah, look to places like that. Casshern has crazy stylized anatomy, which might not be the best thing to learn from. I know there are others out there who keep closer to realism that you could study. If you can ever find them, there are a lot of anthology type books of japanese artists, and I think I usually see a lot of what I'm thinking of in those. Good luck man.
