THANKS JASON

People still bother with CA? It died years ago.

Also on the topic of Jason, whatever happened with all those lawsuits? Last I heard he actually had evidence that proved everyone WAS out to get him and he wasn't just paranoid and making baseless accusations. But that has to have been like a year or two ago now.

CA back in the day was just the gateway drug to me. I bought Jason's lies and this what I ended up with. Now I'm part of a fucked up industry full of narcissistic assholes, who can't draw or even name three masters from the last few centuries.

It was during the TAD lawsuits and stuff. I never followed that closely and there was tons of suing and counter-suing. Most people assumed Jason was guilty because he has a bad track record and has burned a lot of bridges, and then everyone else in the lawsuit was putting blame on him. He claimed they fabricated stuff but it was dismissed as him trying to save face. He then came out saying he had evidence--there was some system in place that auto-recorded meetings and had captured the TAD people discussing how to fuck over Manley and cut him out and stuff. There was also that thing where they tried to discredit him by posting that conversation with the camwhore or whatever where Jason had weird fetishes and was really pushy. But that was the fakest thing I've ever seen. Still a lot of people believed it. I think in the middle of all this were some of the Massive Black videos suing stuff where it turned out the artists never received their royalties from it.

Hard to tell the truth of most of it though since it was a lot of "he said, she said" and it came out at various points that I think both sides were lying to a greater or lesser degree. Also at some point I think both sides' lawyers told everyone to shut the fuck up because they were publicly talking shit and posting private emails and things.

That's on you. Many of the biggest pros today got their start on CA. The amount of resources and the community that existed then was something that isn't available anywhere anymore.

this sucks. I grew up on forums myself and realise that nowadays young people dont have that much of stuff to learn from except Tumblr and thei SAI tutorials + videos.

Actually if you are willing to pay you can find the same resources now, probably even more. Between things like Gumroad, NMA, CGMA, Watts Online, Schoolism etc. there is a ton of information around.

Of course the community is gone, which was a bigger contributor than any resource when it came to development.

Conceptart is so 2005.
Cool kids go to cghub now.
Also I blame conceptart for starting that whole "speedpainting done in 3 minutes with no reference and without using my hands" powercreep.
Before that it was like "hard piece, took me 40 hours" and with conceptart people went to lengths to make elaborate FAKE step by steps how they did amazing pieces in 4 minutes.
Randis Albion was busted tracing japanese photomodels for his work for a tutorial where he claimed to have used "no reference, all constructed in my mind" shit

I think the no reference circlejerk started on forums like CA yeah, but the whole speedpaint in 3 minutes thing is more recent, and definitely has been more of a fb thing.

>Randis Albion was busted tracing japanese photomodels for his work for a tutorial where he claimed to have used "no reference, all constructed in my mind" shit
Shit, haven't heard his name in years now. Did he ever claim to invent things completely? I always was under the impression he was pretty open about using reference. I mean it was obvious even just looking at his work where he used ref.

The thing he got busted for was this specific tutorial where he claims "no photo reference was used"
http://www.3dtotal.com/index_tutorial_detailed.php?id=823#.VmBpfL8pXPM
turns out the thing is basically traced from some japanese bikini model.
The thread on conceptart is long gone, but maybe someone who is really into japanese porn models still recognizes the lady.

what you expected is actually what got. those old photos of studios had the same like minded artist you implied in the third image, a bunch of money crubbing boys using formuliac systems to make mediocre art--sometimes executed with superb technical ability. but in the end nearly all of those people from before, just as those today, created boring uninspired cliched crap that was hustled around as art.

Ah wow, never seen that. I seem to remember him being a lot better than that, the end result (never mind the initial sketch) is very disappointing. I find it funny that he takes the time to say that using ref is good and common practice, and then immediately says he didn't use ref on this. Why lie?

I guess it's a sign of insecurity. Frazetta late in life started claiming he never used reference at all, when there exist multiple examples of it where he swiped from photos or master paintings.

Interesting. Also I notice it was done in 2003, which explains why the result was so shitty.

I think people nowadays are more accepting of reference used and photos being used directly. Just compare the response that Linda Bergkvist received to that of Maciej. One gets death threats and is outcast from all communities and forced to quit art, the other gets work on top projects and makes a fortune selling tutorials.

Randis is a good craftsman but he was too high and might to admit that even he uses photo reference.
Which is missleading as fuck for newbies who assume he constructs all his shit out of his mind.

>> No.2304307

>>2304305
Yeah maybe it was an ego thing, or maybe it was an insecurity thing, or maybe it was that he was afraid of legal ramifications with copyright stuff especially since it was client work. The fact that it was 2003 probably helped him feel he could get away with it.

And while it is misleading, there ARE people who can do very good things without ref. And there are also plenty of people who do recommend using ref.

>And while it is misleading, there ARE people who can do very good things without ref. And there are also plenty of people who do recommend using ref.
It impressed me enough as a teenager so I learned how to draw photorealistic faces without tracing.
So in some way randis did good with that tutorial.
It's just puzzling why he felt he had to claim no photo reference was used.

I gave some reasons already on why he might have said that. Also now this is more harmful to his reputation, but at the time if he just flat out said "yeah I copied a photo" then he probably would have been really looked down upon and it would hurt his career.

The fact of the matter though is that lots of artists, even before digital, lied about their process for fear of how they would seen. Some old masters hid the use of camera lucida. Early illustrators claimed to not use photos and would do it in secret. Artists would claim to not use any ref but then it would be found they swiped from a National Geographic photo. Artists swiped from each other a lot too. And today people do photobashes or paint on top of photos and claim it is painted. Or just don't mention the use of photos and imply it is painted. Hell, the biggest names in the industry have all done swipes without saying anything. Jaime, Mullins, and Ruanjia have all been caught. Also, I think it is worth noting that as far as I know there haven't been many cases where there were serious repercussions. At most they tend to have some anon shit talk them on /ic/ or a forum with a side-by-side comparison image.
