Rembrandt painted indoor portraits and in a time when there were limited pigments available. Brown was used as a shadow colour for centuries but with the advancement of chemical technology and paint tubes in the 19th century artists had new colours at their disposal. Plein air painting and Impressionism were allowed to flourish. These things began bringing purple and blue into shadows. This is often the case in outdoor scenarios because of the influence of the blue sky.

So as a rule of thumb it's not a bad thing to use in some cases (mostly outdoor images), but obviously not every case will it apply.

I don't want to start a shitstorm again, but the arguments for it are that it gives very believable form and lighting and is very consistent because it is a set process. The arguments against it are that it can be stiff and lifeless, is difficult to do unless you really know your forms already, is too reliant on digital methods, defeats the purpose of 2d since it is using 3d lighting approaches, is formulaic, only works well for matte surfaces, there are other better techniques for painting, and in that particular image the end result throws a generic blue over it and flattens it a lot which defeats the purpose of the method. Those are some of the main points, but there's obviously more to each side. You can probably tell that I'm personally in the camp against that method, maybe someone else can chime in with more pros instead of cons.

Shadows can obviously be whatever color you want. If things in light are warm, it can be beneficial to have cool shadows and vice versa. But that rule gets broken successfully all the time and in the end it doesn't even matter how hard you try. Keep that in mind I designed this rhyme to remind myself how I tried so hard.

Years ago, just as I was getting into drawfaggotry, I saw a tutorial for making alien/ insect soldiers from a starting base of flat-coloured blobs. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? I'd imagine the actual tutorial isn't worth a damn, but I'd like to see it for nostalgia's sake.

Originally it was accompanied by a blog post that explained the whole process. In a way it was a tutorial because he showed off each layer individually and explained what layer modes they were and how to stack them to build up convincing lighting quickly while being able to make quick easy iterations. That's because it's not in sunlight. Most standalone design things like characters are lit with an imaginary ambient light source because it shows the design better and doesn't get cluttered by harsh shadows and values that hide things. It's good lighting for clarity of the entire thing. You don't get rimlights like that in nature either but they are included because it helps show certain forms or shapes better, especially ones that are in shadow.

>It could just be fake then.
It is. Look at the half assed initial sketch, that goes to almost perfect in one step.
It's just a bunch of flash bullshit for a portfolio and missleading on purpose.
He probably modelled the thing in 3D (which is a feat in itself, but less spectacular than someone applying perfect ambient occlusion based on a chickenshit sketch) and then went back and made it look like it's handpainted.
The same trick that all those patreon "scammers" use.
They like to pretend it comes easy to them and it's not hard work at all, to demoralize competition and to misslead them about their process.
Their end results are still great, but it's all smoke and mirrors as to how they really do it.

Does anyone have any reference on painting shadow tones?
Like how to mix a good looking color without killing the overall color, how dark you should go, what colors you should mix to get darker/reflected light

I'm fine with light planes, but shadowed planes really kill my paintings and it's super frustrating.

Don't know of any references like that off the top of my head, but chances are you aren't thinking about shadows correctly.

Anything you can observe that isn't pitch black is the result of light emitting, reflecting, etc into your eye. This includes dark shadows. Ambient light (often bounce light) illuminates shadows, and that light bounces back into your eye.

From this standpoint, the color and value of a shadowed area depends on the environment. There is no universal for what looks good.

Your best bet is to learn how colored lights affect colored objects, as your ambient light that reaches the shadows will likely be colored bounce light. It also helps to be aware of the temperature of your primary light source. A warm light source will give you comparatively cool shadows because the object is presumably exposed to the same temperature of ambient light all around, but only the lit portion is exposed to an additional warm source. (The reverse is true for cool light sources)

Check out pic related. In all frames, the main light source stays the same. The first frame has a black environment and a black ground plane. The shadows are black because there's no ambient light. The next frame has the same ground, but now a dark gray environment. Even that light is enough to start filling in the shadows and make the form there visible. Every other frame only changes the ground plane, and you can see how bounce light from these nondescript materials can color and illuminate the shadows.

I should also add that pic related dealt with purely diffuse reflections. Specular reflections, subsurface scattering, fresnel effects, etc will all affect the forms you're painting. You can think of each effect independently stacking at various strengths. Light is additive.

I don't know if there is a direct name for it but it is commonly taught in ateliers. You could call it the "Bargue method" because the Bargue drawing course teaches this blockin method.

Looks like he is setting the bw sketch layer to color burn or something like that and then adds a base color beneath it.

Could you explain with more detail? This painting method looks really interesting

>> No.2303962

>>2303955

Well keep in mind I'm just giving my best guess here, but I know a lot of artists do something similar. The main idea is much like a traditional underpainting. You just want to capture the major shadow shapes for the block in to have something to work with. I don'w know if there really is that much more to it. You could however take note that when he turns the bw sketch into color the saturation is quite high. A common beginner mistake is to paint with really muddy shitty colors because they shade with black.

To make a color darker without loosing his "power" you had a little of the next color on the color wheel and a little of the opposite color.
For example you have orange and want it darker you add red(the next color on the wheel) and green(the opposite of red)

>shadows can't add. (they can)
No, they don't. Shadows are an absence of light. Light adds, shadows do not. And in this example he is showing how it is incorrect to have the same light source in the shadow, since the shadow blocks it. So having the specular in the shadow and the other form changes from the main light are indeed incorrect.

>overexposing (why teach this?)
So you can recognize how it differs from proper exposure. You would be amazed at how many people copy overexposed images thinking it is right.

>"no shadow" when in fact the object has a shadow. (it doesn't have a cast shadow)
It's showing what the cylinder looks like without two cast shadows upon it (like in the two examples to the right of it). So you can see it is not banded and that the form is round throughout.

>space filler poop
It's a part of a super long tutorial actually and this is just one part. He threw in several joke things throughout.

oxerexpsure is not a digital camera onyl issue. or a camera issue.

Its a very really physical thing. And even if it wasnt it is embeded in our visual memory long enough thus can be used as a tool.

Why not talk about it.
