Is there something I'm missing with this guy? When I first saw his stuff it was posted here, and it reeked of being a shill thread. I've since seen his stuff on other sites with lots of praise, but it seems like he's just like kinkade or that wild saturation broad stroke city night guy.

You're welcome. We are about the same age and grew up in the same city (Stockholm, Sweden). All his stuff are right in the childhood for me. The way he blends elements from the 70s, 80s and 90s just fucking does it for me.

God, me too. Classic science fiction is a genre that catches me on every level, and his seamless melding of robotics and the commonplace as a wonderfully painted whole is delightful. But not just that, I feel as if I'm looking at scenes that are actually real and believable, despite some of the crazy futuristic elements. And the thought behind some of these. I can't stop reading Asmiov for example, and just seeing paintings like his kid about to step on the smiling snowman outside a robotics institute makes me very happy.
(That's fantastic you live so closeby, since sometimes the areas we live in affect our art in small ways- it would be interesting to look around.)

What people don't get around here is that art is more than technique. While Stålenhag is pretty damn good, some of his figure work is a little shaky for instance. But that's not the most important, the narrative aspects of his work is what makes his stuff special to me. And agreed about the sci fi stuff. AI and robotics is going to have a massive impact on our society and evolution as a species I think, don't know if it will happen in our lifetime but it's extremely exciting to think about.

He's a bit overrated, but he's by no means anything remotely like Kinkade. I was really puzzled at first too when I first saw his stuff and the reactions he got. I think though a lot of it comes down to subject matter and it is "cool" stuff like dinosaurs or giant robots, and then it is combined with everyday landscapes that are designed to trigger nostalgia.

His stuff has grown on me though. I am really put off by his attempts at faking traditional paints where he only uses like two brushes and then overlays canvas and brushstroke textures on everything. But he is good at painting things with clean simple shapes and he is good at using light and colour in his images and doesn't resort to garish bright stuff like Kinkade did. Sometimes it's a little too much like he just copied a photo, but overall it's not bad.

shit man, throw a rock and you'll hit a couple artists who are better than simon. i agree his subject matter is interesting and he has cool ideas and tasteful designs but he is kinda shit technically. which is why his stuff looks so photographic and not impressionistic (like he captures the light and the way your eyes would see the scenario)

Simon is not shit from a technical standpoint. I'd consider him quite good (not a master, but definitely very solid). He just chases a different aesthetic in art than most of the people you mentioned. He's more in line with Hopper than Sargent, and there's nothing wrong with that, just different taste. He's more interested in a clean flat disciplined style than a very painterly flashy colourful one. And while his brushwork isn't all fancy, it is still very economical and efficient if you ever look at closeups of his work. Also worth mentioning that your list of artists there includes a lot of people who don't even do environments or suck pretty bad at them (though I would agree a lot of them are more technically skilled than Simon).

He is most definitely not "kinda shit" in the technical department. His control of values shows a lot of skill. If anything, I'd say it's his drawing skills rather than painting where he is most lacking. The guys on your lists are good, but many of them have way inferior landscapes in my opinion. And how can you even put guys like Theo Prins in the same category? They have completely different styles. I don't think Theo could do what Simon does and vice versa, just as an example. Honestly I get the impression that you're the kinda guy who can't appreciate a painting unless it is a super contrasty "muh brustrokes" color dodge fest.
