That's a difficult question. That line between painting as a profession and painting "for yourself" can be difficult to point out, especially as a fine artist. I can't take commissions, I simply can't paint or draw something I really don't care about, it always turn out to be very below the level of what I can do, my ability to draw is spoiled like that. It's my big limitation. But still, I paint and draw everyday, I'm really taking it seriously and wanting to put my ideas into paper. I want to expose my works, I'm working for that, and I want to sell them. So yes, I aim to be a professional, while making what is sincere. But since we live in planet earth I will have to find another job to pay my ways hah. Sorry for the long reply.

Feasibly, if you want to do commissions having people actually notice (and if they like you, disseminate) when you're doing them.

As far as I'm concerned its just a little bit of self gratification. I throw my shit up there and getting followers is just a sort of 'by the way somebody liked your art enough to keep an eye on you.' It also gives me a (even if imagined) sense of obligation to do stuff.
It's better for motivation than sitting in a vacuum or constantly solely having /ic/'s cynicism shoved down your throat, even if a bit of that is important too.

This could be about taste of music, videogames etc. What I meant with ironic was the bitternes (read le salty xD) that the people who get buttmad about are showing. All you want is to break the anonymity to be able to pay back and when you realize you can't see the person or get justification through them proving to you that they're worth of giving you a reply in the first place, you take the easy route and go "you are just hiding behind anonymity because you're jealous of our skill and you're too afraid to admit it" which also comes out as "post your work" but again, the irony lies in the person posting that. They got hit under the belt and are too afraid to admit defeat too afraid to admit their mistakes, too afraid to look at their drawings and see all those innaccuracies that make them jump out as shit. This is incorrect. I myself was not a huge fan of this guy but check the archives and you'll see that he gets detailed about his opinions when asked. Ask him questions, I've seen him answer them and imho his posts aren't so bad once he actually starts talking. He is a bit inconsistent though - that's why as you said it's probably better if he focuses on a few that interest him and offer his opinions of those rather than whatever he does now. OR better yet go all out in the draw threads. but that's really up to him and he's not breaking any rules afaik.

I don't think you need to be a good artist to provide good critique, at least in theory. Obviously in practice a critic who is experienced with art will know better what to look for, but somebody who has viewed a lot of art can also have a say in what makes art appealing. Art isn't just made for other artists.

That said, the guy that plagues this thread does not have much to say in defence of his opinions, and his opinion has no inherent worth. The problem shouldn’t inherently be whether he can prove he's a better artist. The problem is he's unable or unwilling to validate his opinions with the reason he holds them. If he said why he didn't like art, an artist could decide whether to act on that and try to adjust what they're doing, or dismiss his criticism if they think his advice is wrong. In many cases, somebody inexperienced with art would clearly show their lack of knowledge at this stage, but somebody knowledgeable - even if bad at art in practice - could still provide useful advice.

In my experience, a lot of /ic/ is actually quite good at taking criticism when it's criticism, and not just "it's shit." Even when someone gives you a vague "it's good" that's a good cue to keep doing what you're doing, because it's working. If someone goes "it's shit" what do you do? Completely change everything you're doing? Pick a new medium? A new subject matter? No, you have no fucking clue what makes it shit. You don't know what you're doing wrong, you might change something you were doing well thinking it's the problem. All it tells you is you’re doing SOMETHING wrong, and nearly every artist is aware of this reality.

Positive and negative comments are not created equal, even though many on /ic/ delusionally believe that all negative criticism is useful. A positive comment with no substance is more useful than a negative comment with no substance, but a negative comment with substance is more useful than a positive comment with or without.

If I started drawing celebrities, would it make me a sell out?

I'm going to start up my own tumbler within the next month, but I'd like to have something separate and professional where I can just store 12~20 of my best stuff along with contact information to share with potential employees. The tumbler would be for general socializing/networking, and updating perpetually with sketches and doodles.

I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to setting up online portfolios/galleries.
I mean, I imagine an online portfolio works just like a physical portfolio in regards to what to put on it, but I'm completely unfamiliar with the sites for this stuff.

You can use several different services to build your portfolio. Behance, deviantart, artstation and many others IIRC grant you that functionality. Some might be a free service but you pay for more customization and your own domain name.

You can use tumblr to build one, change the domain name to one you purchase if you want it to look professional, pick an appropriate theme, and disable the visibility of comments, notes, share buttons, etc.

One of the more professional looking solutions is to just build the site on your own. Places like squarespace allow you to do it very easily with premade templates that are built to serve as portfolios.

Just do some research. Google the above services and the word "portfolio" to see what they offer. Google "best portfolio building sites". See what other artists are using for their portfolios. If they're custom made, does it look like something you could build using one of those services? If the browser has that dark gray cube next to the site name, then it was built in squarespace.

I thought DA was easy to get followers, but it's way harder than tumblr. Even with good pieces most people just hit the favorite button(that works as a Like button there) and it's done, rarely they will take their time to go trough the gallery and follow your work... I get the same feeling. I mostly just dump shit there and forget about it now, because if you want anything to get noticed (unless you're already popular) it requires you needing to submit it to a ton of groups... Which requires you to join those groups, wait for them to accept your application, then submit it and wait again. It's unintuitive and a headache for almost no benefit in most cases. I have like a third of the watchers on deviantart to tumblr and I started on deviantart earlier. It's a pretty shit site unless you're Sakimichan tier. Hell, going through the new submissions list I notice plenty of really, really good artists who hardly get noticed because they don't spend every hour of every minute whoring themselves as hard as possible in groups/the forums/anywhere else.

That said if followers matter that much to you, do what some people do and favorite / watch literally everything you see on the new submissions. The shittier the artist the better, they're more likely to notice. I think it's a pretty shallow tactic personally but as far as I can see it's effective.

Nah, I'm not that desperate! lol

But yeah, I've submitted some work to some groups, but even so people just don't put you on their watch. Mostly just fav a work and that's it.
I was looking trough some artists and I came to the same conclusion, there are some pretty skilled artists with just over 500 watchers.

I'll try to submit to daily deviation, but that's it... It's too time consuming to go around groups and trough the process you described.


Tumblr is way better in that regard. YOU CAN go after some art related tumblr, or fan tumblrs of some fanart you did and submit your work to that... but you can just post your work and if it's good it will be seen eventually.

Don't have "how to" books myself, but from what I gather - How to draw by Scott Robertson should be a good fit if you want to go into vehicle design. I have his artbooks, but somehow still fail to order that particular one.

Draw people and animals in a 3-D block manner. You know, when you learned how to draw forms. All in perspective, imperative.
Add mechanisms that would correspond with the muscles (i.e. piston/spring where calf is) that give a believable sense of something that is there for a reason.

Here's some thoughts: Try to vary your compositions a bit. The focal points are always at the same "1/3 point" and it's almost always a straight vertical element there.
I like minimalism too, and the "rule of thirds" is a good guideline for starting out, but in this case it looks like you have a pre-made template or something.

Try removing the vertical elements and just put more time into rendering the natural landscape that's there at the focal point.
Try having a secondary or tertiary focal point.
Try moving them around and experimenting with compositional rhythmics and focal point hierarchy.
