Why is it that most of those photorealistic oil paintings look so dull and lifeless?
Not talking about the subject matter (though I think it's mostly dull too), but the texture.
Is it because they don't varnish their canvas?
Or maybe it's just the photos, because I admittedly haver never seen such a painting live.

A lot of what makes a painting is the play with hard,soft and lost edges. That translation of edges is subjective and is the artist's interpretation of reality. If you remove that part of the painting it becomes photo-realistic and cold because there isn't an human interpretation anymore but a photographic one.

But photography is not as sterile all the time.
It is also the job of a photographer to achieve these contrasts and sensibilities.
I think the problem with those kinds of ilustrators is that they are obsessed with jamming the image with detail instead of making a impact-full composition, since in most photos, high contrast, specially black and white, is what makes it stand out from the rest.

This is just a bunk of black on a gray background but is more powerful than a HiFi-bathroom.

BUT I also know very little about hyperrealistic authors so if I say something stupid, disregard that I suck dicks.
