And no, in the end if the finished image is too dependent on references and a trained eye can tell it is clearly referenced, the finished image is not the only thing that matters.
Kyle's main problem is that he uses photo mashups to construct his references (he claims the clients provide them, but I have some doubts about this statement) and then he just reproduces what he sees, with really small alterations. The result has the same flaws as the photo mashup has, because he doesn't take in account perspective inconsistency.
Have you seen the last wip he posted 2 or 3 threads ago? That shit was atrocious to look at. And it's the same with all his over-referenced pieces. You can exactly tell which parts of the illustration are referenced from photos and which ones are done by him (the faces for example).
Please stop repeating your mantra that using references is nothing bad. I know that. Kyle's problem is not using references, his problem is that he is TOO DEPENDENT on them. I hope this time you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Yes it does. It still hurts him because it extremely limits him as an artist. Meaning if called out on the spot to draw, anywhere, he'd fall flat on his face because he uses reference to point that it's a crutch. That's probably why he never streams his work. He doesn't have much freedom and that hurts every artist, which is why you should be working to get rid of those limiters by expanding your imaginative visual library.

But it does matter. You sound like a beginner. Referencing isn't bad, but when referencing, you should only be taking the general poses or concepts from the reference and reconstruct it via how you imagine it, not via how you see it verbatim in the image your referencing. Otherwise it's a study, not an original work.

Pic related is another one where it's obvious the image was mix-matched references. Just look at the perspective of the body, it's completely fucked. The only thing about Kyle I consider impressive is his rendering. Everything else isn't noteworthy.

in comics and animation, you'll have to draw things over and over again, to the point where reference won't save you if you're lacking too much skill.
but in this case, or even in the extreme case you stated, kyle could probably still look up refs and get the job done. it's only one image after all.

The arm feels short to me, if its supposed to be bent slightly you arent conveying it enough and the arm looks short rather than bent.
Also, the shirt is a little too wrinkled in the arm, wrinkles/creases where they dont have to be, etc. Take into consideration the where the fabric should crease in relation to how the arm is position.
