Started practicing random stuff from info-graphs. It's a lot more fun when I have a clear direction on what to practice. I keep telling myself to 'learn <anatomy perspective proportion other fundamentals>' but I'm usually just going in a vague direction of these and hoping I'm doing the right thing. Like always, progress is slow so I drop it

I understand you can't fit an entire life's guide to anatomy and fundamentals in a single image. I'm down for learning and struggling with these difficult subjects. What makes it fun is knowing that I'm doing something right

Going through chapter 3 of berts book. At the exercise where he says to draw a model sitting down or lounging. I tried to do this but this is my final result. I feel like every exercise takes longer than it should for me to finish and isnt up the standard it should be.I find myself redrawing parts over and making adjustments which takes up a lot of time. I haven't even inked this or shaded it and its taken me an hour. The whole exercise is supposed to be 30-40 minutes. Do I just keep grinding or is there some error in my approach? I feel like that 1 minute rough sketch you are supposed to do at the beginning is totally useless to me. It's always very wrong and doesnt help guide the rest of my drawing because its so rushed.

What the fuck kind of model is that man, just use a nude or at least someone in a bathing suit, good lord.

Here's the deal. Everyone says the exact same thing. It's going to take you longer on your first few times around with any exercise, and you're going to make tons of mistakes. You'll be lucky if you do something perfectly the 100th time you do it. Exercises aren't meant to be done once and thrown away, give them a few tries, go back to them later and see how much you've improved. Think of your first try as a warm up.

Every drawing you do you're going to be CONSTANTLY redrawing, making adjustments, etc. The only thing you can do is spend more time measuring things, going slowly and patiently. Even then you're still going to have to take a step back and fix things from time to time. You're going to be really bad at this for a long time. That's just the way it is.

Don't worry about the 1 minute shit. At this early of a stage you should be taking as much time as you need to do things.

Also, go to the thread with the deer in the OP because this beginner thread is a joke. >>2230141

Aside from style and technique you won't learn much from copying another artist's sketch. Anyways, keep in mind that female faces are generally rounder around the jawline and chin compared to males. The neck is also too wide making her look too masculine.

A tip when drawing eyes is to not heavily develop on one before you work on the other. What ends up happening is a ton of erasing and hours of trying to match the other eye. Try to sketch both of them out lightly before you develop on them to make sure they go where they are supposed to go. Work on them as one unified object instead of separate entities.

One last tip is to reflect the image with a mirror or photoshop and you will see every single mistake exposed to you very clearly. This is a great way to reveal what your drawing "really" looks like. It does not lie.

Good luck!

If you wanted it to look like a shitty cartoon, you succeeded. If you're trying to make it look remotely realistic (at least relatable to a human head) "small" line changes won't fix it, you need to redraw the whole thing.

If you just want it to look like a better version of that style of cartoon, better symmetry in the face would probably help, and those three circles on her forehead look weird, the color makes me assume that's hair, but nothing else indicates that, they're just three circles floating there.

>>2236441
Your entire torso looks like one solid block. The upper body is rotating too far, and the pelvis should be rotating with the movement of the legs, not the movement of the arms. The leg being raised would rotate the pelvis clockwise, opposite the rotation of the rib cage. The soft space of the abdomen is where the twisting would be exemplified.

You should just get to drawing a subject you're not familiar with, and/or to the levels of accuracy you would normally not.

This why, for anatomy especially, there are no particularly useful infographs. You just study everything of it. Because you need to understand how everything works so that it can coexist and make a functional final piece.

Get a close-up of a body part, draw it, including bone and muscles on different layers/sheet. Do it a few times until it becomes natural to a point where you can do a different angle on your own. There, you have literally learned anatomy.

It works like this for pretty much everything. You feel like you get lost because you are afraid to try. Try EVERYTHING. Even a piece of dog shit you find on the street.

tl;dr: That's good enough, don't worry about it.

Longer version: 2 point perspective is just an approximation and even when you're in the cone of vision not everything can be aligned perfectly. You could get a better results in 3 point perspective or something even more complex, but it would take much longer. Since it's a really minor defect nobody cares and you shouldn't care either.
That being said, it's still a pretty good way of constructing a grid, when vanishing points are off the page.

I'm having a really difficult time putting everything together for figure drawing from imagination. I can sketch out simple and not completely terrible gestures and skeletal mannequins, and I feel like I'm pretty good at drawing simple forms. But when I put it all together I feel like I'm missing a step or something. I feel completely hopeless when it comes to drawing figure from imagination, and I just don't know if I'm missing something or just need to do it a shitload more.

Are there any specific ways artists tackle figures, beginning to end, that you'd recommend? And when do the more specific features of anatomy come in? Like, gesture I can grasp. Mannequin, a-okay. Forms, not too terrible. But put them together and it falls apart. It just seems like such a monumental thing to try and tackle.

That being said, you chose a pretty terrible image to copy.
Unless you're painting, try avoiding abstract messes like that. It's fairly simple and relies on being trippy to be passable.
For you to get back into drawan, you should draw some models, work on anatomy n' shit until you get a feel for drawing again.

Your sails are fantastic, but the hull of the ship seems very poor and boxxy.
On a classic ship like that, there's a almost tulip shape to the boat, along with drains in the side, cannon slots, it varies in height with the back being the highest, front being half way, and the deck being the lowest. I can't see the large support of wood running from the bow to the stern. It also doesn't seem to connect to the figurehead. (pole attached to the front)
(pic related)
Your crows nest looks pretty fukken neato though.

If i wanted to get into this would getting one of those Intuos tablets be a good idea?

Wacom's branding is fucking retarded and (probably intentionally) confusing.

There are various Intuos tablets. They used to be their mid-higher end, but now they've also rebranded their lower end tablets to be called intuos.
Assuming you mean these, they're good to start with. Just don't cheap out and get a small. Get at least a medium.

A step up from them is the Intuos Pro, which has twice the pen sensitivity. Depending on who you ask that's an incredible upgrade or practically worthless, a lot depends on what you do.

The Best Buy has a Small, a Medium, then another Medium that costs more. Money isnt really an issue because the only expense i have is my phone and when were in town and i go out to buy shit/waste my money.

I ask because i live on a fishing boat but weve had a lot of free time lately and i was thinking of taking up drawing and figured using one of those drawing tablets was the best way to go about it.

id seriously just be starting so it would be really basic drawing. No photoshop stuff or whatever

As an anon that started digitally and has recently branched into traditional, I do think that starting with traditional could be a wise choice. Just to make sure you have a feel for it, and it forces you to be a little more deliberate.

That said, if you really want to start digital (I was the same way) then I say start with the Intuos Pen and Touch Medium or, if you're adventurous enough to spring about twice as much money, go for the Intuos Pro Medium.

The Intuos Pro - unless you drop it or something - should last you. You'll probably want to upgrade from the pen and touch after a while, but if you're not sure digital art is for you it might still be better to hedge your bets.

Boring in a sense that you should try to convey an element of story to what you draw. This keeps you from regurgitating what already has been done and makes it more appealing. You're able to say more with the characters expressions and how they interacting with the objects/environment around them. Almost as if you're condensing a comic into one scene. So instead just finding a reference and drawing a character based on that reference 1:1, write out what you will draw first so you aren't a slave to reference. Your writing should be as specific as possible.

And no, it isn't well drawn either. That's why you're in this thread remember?

It's okay; right arm needs a lot of work. The size of the shoulder implies that it's coming forward and should therefore be closer to the viewer than the breast. The hand needs more shade to look comfortable - initially I thought that the thumb was drawn on the wrong side. The elbow could use some definition - in contrast with the definition of her abdomen it looks flabby and out of place.

The head comes off as a teensy bit mannish but I can't quite place why. It's also quite flat and looks like it's a product of 'symbol drawing' which is something you should stray away from on /ic/

Given that the hair is hanging, the breasts are a bit off too. You've got the shape mostly right, but they're out of perspective.

Hips should also be a bit wider imo.

tl;dr
>Fix the arm
>Vary the shading more,
>Stop with that symbol thing
>Change the breasts
>Widen the hips a bit (maybe)

One section at a time. Read it, then try to put into practice what you've learned. Often it even helpful to draw while you read it. When you finished sketching, read it again and try to identify the main points the section is covering and if you got anything wrong.

Move on to the next section. The next day, do the first section exercises without referring to the from the book, then refer to it again to see if you can still get it right.

When you have the book always open people tend to just copy the images and not absorb the key points. Going through the whole thing at once is alot to commit to memory.

Read through fun with a pencil by Loomis, it's basically a beginner book on how to draw from your imagination by using construction. Learning construction can be really hard in the beginning so don't be discourage if you don't understand it at first just keep on going and then go trough the figure drawing book.
The figure drawing book will be a lot easier if you understand construction and you will be ably to apply it better to your drawings.

>don't draw contours
I actually start with a gesture in most cases and just assumed that the first step to adding form would be the shape of the form, only then followed by shading. But maybe I got that wrong, I'll try some stuff like silhouettes and drawing shading-only tomorrow to rectify that as well as try to incorporate more "shapes" into my drawing. Thanks m80

The most concerning problem is that it looks like you can't see or draw 'proportion'.

If you took a ruler and methodically measure 1/3 or 1/2 and places your features on that it will look better. Draw a head methodically and see if it looks better.

Practice freehand drawing squares, then divide it in half, quarters and thirds. Measure with a ruler to see how accurate you actually are.

Chicken scratch is short strokes without purpose while found lines tend to be longer and reiterative. Yours are more corrective; they suggest well and the weight is in the right place, but they are too thick and could be shaved off on either the inside or outside in different places.

You definitely have an eye for it, but could use more control. I like the way the form comes out of the inside of the line like where the foot meets the toe, but like me, you need more control with it. Get like a pentel hi-tec or a micron and practice with that. It's cleaned up my work immensely and made my strokes and line weight much more intentional. It makes you either get rid of erroneous lines or make them aesthetic.

The houses, castle and bridge all have different horizons. They don't converge on a single spot.

No, imagine if those were connected boxes.

Or a lego set.

They're all sitting on the same "ground". Some are just taller than the others. There's only one horizon.
