"Post all the pics that you look to for inspiration"
Your opinion is irrelevant and baseless. For one thing typical as it may be that doesn't change the fact that that very statement means it's top quality all the same which leads to my second point. His work inspires me and that's why I posted it in the inspirational art thread. Whether you agree with me or not does not matter because what inspires me wont inspire you.

TLDR I can like whatever the fuck I want bitch. Typical calarts student "stuff"... what a faggot.

My grandmother had a print of one of Monet's paintings, so I grew to like pictures of open fields of flowers that seem somewhat oddly silent and distant.

Generally I like to search for 'distant' pictures that seem slightly uncanny. Large and empty libraries, cathedrals, wires, rail tracks.

Im more into comics than single piece, so entertainment value>craftsmenship. But something like this (pic) is inspiring to me because the artist could have just try to spread the joke up into multiple panels. But instead, the artist compacts the gag into one image and is just as funny if not funnier, than making into a comic. It makes me realize I can make an image funny without turning it into a comic, so I can still be a d/ic/k, instead going full c/oc/k. If any anons have some pieces they find funny, or compacts a story into one, please post. Kim jung gi is really gud at this too.

She was very well known in the early days of digital art because she did some incredibly realistic paintings with very nice subtle things in them. Nowadays they are nice but nothing that special, but at the time they were a few steps ahead of what anybody had done in digital. She was very popular. Then it came about that for some of her paintings, in some sections, she had used photos and painted over it. She was decried as a fraud and went from very popular to extremely hated and many fans felt betrayed by her for lying about her paintings (she simply never mentioned the use of photos). There was major drama in which she was treated really horribly and even received death threats iirc and the police had to get involved. In the end she quit art entirely, left all online communities and went to live off in the countryside with family.

And yet now people use photos way more blatantly and it's industry standard and expected and recommended. In fact if you don't do this there are many jobs you simply won't get hired for. Basically she was witch hunted for being ahead of her time.

No one gives a fuck outside of other digital illustrators who think they're better than it. Early digital painting was a very different world, essentially it was nothing but a hobby and most professional art was still done traditionally. She got reamed for doing something the plebs thought was cheating when now they eat it up.

>> No.2240610

>>2240600
Well there is some controversy still with photobashers, but the hatred for them comes mostly from amateurs or is spoken about behind closed doors. The number of people who publicly criticize them can be counted on one hand.

And while some people don't like it, it has become industry standard. If you don't photobash you will have a lot of trouble getting certain jobs or finishing certain jobs in time. A lot of art directors specifically ask for photobashes because it is faster. And even in illustration work it is becoming more ubiquitous, and has taken over things like MtG, Applibot, and some book covers.

>> No.2240614

>>2240609
>Early digital painting was a very different world, essentially it was nothing but a hobby and most professional art was still done traditionally
I wouldn't call it a hobby, but it was more niche and more conservative in the opinions of the community then. It was being used professionally even very early on by a few pioneering individuals, and has gradually grown in popularity since. The Spectrum books are a great resource on seeing how digital has grown. In the first issues from the early 90's there are only one or two digital paintings, then each issue it gradually has a few more until the ones now where there is half or more of all art being done digitally.

>> No.2240616

>>2240589
Well, that explains why she isn't really active anymore. That's too bad. I was expecting that she was using photo reference pretty heavily and was looking for something stating that on her deviantart without luck. She probably should have stated it, but it still doesn't justify a negative response of that caliber.
I wonder what she's doing now?

Even if it's technically nothing impressive anymore. The two works of her I posted really grabs my attention and the setting is right up my alley. I also like the use of light.

>> No.2240625

>>2240616
I think a lot of the time she probably painted from reference. I'm not sure how much was actually painted directly over photos. You can probably find the comparison images from back then. I seem to recall some hair was done that way and maybe a hand or something. It wasn't even in all her work I don't think.

But yes, it was unnecessarily harsh on her. One of the more tragic pieces in digital art history.

>> No.2240626

>>2240614
Speaking specifically of digital painting as opposed to general digital illustration, I meant that it was a hobby in the sense that it wasn't being widely used professionally in the 90s or even the early 00s. You had a few very dedicated forums for it and some pioneers, but not on this level where I swear more people know how to do shitty conceptart 1-inch brush painting than simple color illustration.

I always found the transition very fascinating. The original community were a bunch of traditional artists and graphic designers with very conservative ideas and methods. Half the shit done now was shunned.

>> No.2240631

>>2240626
Ah okay. I too find it absolutely fascinating how things have changed. I wish there was someone keeping track of all the developments, you could have a whole course or book on the history of digital art even though it is so young. There have been so many talented people involved over the years, the technology has changed so much, the aesthetics, the techniques. And it's gone from extremely niche to extremely mainstream and oversaturated. Unfortunately nobody to my knowledge is keeping track of this and a lot of the information and images have been lost from the internet (eg all the old images on Sijun are broken, eatpoo doesn't exist anymore etc).

Also, I think VERY initially, digital art used a fair bit of photography. At that point nobody had realized that it could be used to "paint" things from scratch, so they used it more in a photomanipulation way with perhaps a few brushstrokes. It was only a bit later with the invention of tablets and some more sophisticated software that "pure" painting became the norm in digital art. The reason everything was so conservative and things shunned was probably in part due to the desire to have digital recognized as a legitimate tool that still takes skill and isn't the computer doing the work for you.

>> No.2240638

>>2240631
Forgot to mention that the reason that it was "a bunch of traditional artists and graphic designers with very conservative ideas and methods" as you call it was that for a long time the barrier of entry was pretty big. The cost of the software and a computer able to run it and a tablet were too much, so only people who were already established professional artists would buy it and use it. It was only in the early 2000's (I forget the exact date, maybe or 2005/6 or so) that the technology became cheap enough for hobbyists to pick up and start playing with. That's when CA really exploded and digital art began shifting more mainstream. I'm not sure what happened in the last like 3 years or whatever to make the community 50x bigger though. Possibly the community just opened up to the rest of the world instead of just US/EU?

>> No.2240710

>>2240638
It's all gone. I heard most of the history from various graphic designers who went through the transition or started on digital early, guys in or approaching their 40s now. You're right that no one used PS for painting and it wasn't really designed for it; it was almost purely photomanip and graphic design work. Painting has been attempted since the 80s, though. Bezinski was working on it before his death.

There have been affordable tablets since the early 90s, but photoshop and a computer were the biggest barrier, though no worse than any gaming pc (which was still twice as much as it is now). The biggest limitation was hard drive space. What made it blow up has been $70 tablets, rampant piracy, and alternatives to PS that aren't shit.

Around 2005 was when I noticed digital taking off as a medium. That was when broadband started spreading from major cities out into the sticks and when Apple was on top of their hipster graphic design game. I don't think the barrier was ever the cost, more that it needed the means to spread memetically and the critical mass to do so. Quite a few of my friends bought tablets, but I wasn't really into the digital look then.

I think it's grown so much recently because graphic design has grown massively as a field and there is, or was, a huge demand and a lot of empty chairs in the digital illustration field. People want those "easy" jobs but came too late.

>> No.2240731

>>2240710
I don't think it's all gone. It still exists as you say in the older generation of people who lived through the shifts. Mullins alone probably knows enough on the topic to write a book. Between him and other pioneers like Robh Ruppel and Sparth I bet you there could be a pretty comprehensive record made of the history of things.

And maybe you are right that the hard drive space and other physical limitations were what held things back. You look at early digital painting and it was all like 500x700 pixels at full resolution, and they painted with tiny brushes because the memory wasn't good enough to handle anything larger. Obviously this will impact the look of art compared to now where you can use sophisticated programs that run 200 layers on a canvas 20k pixels across.

Internet certainly has helped too like you say. I know without it I wouldn't have pursued art as a career. I never would have learned the things I know and I wouldn't have seen how it was possible to self-teach to a professional level.

>> No.2240743

>>2240731
>I never would have learned the things I know and I wouldn't have seen how it was possible to self-teach to a professional level.
I think this here is it. Broadband gave us youtube and youtube gave us tutorials. Before that, dA was nothing but colored pencil and copics. The video game industry working directly in digital didn't hurt either. Neither did larger monitors. I feel like it was the confluence of everything that did it, but the cost was never the real issue. Now it may very well be with price of paint and sable brushes getting banned for import by progressives and driving the price up. Digital art being cheaper for the same results is almost a theory no longer.

I don't think it's time yet for a comprehensive history because digital has only made one major step in all this time and still doesn't have anything native to the medium or even something that it does better than the mediums it borrows from. Going back in the conversation, this is one of the major hurdles digital art has against being "legitimate". It is like the history of early 3D videogames. There's good shit and some of it is exceptional, but it is limited by the medium. We are headed towards the metaphorical Golden Age very soon though.

Also, writing history in the internet era is almost impossible. You can't really say who did what, there is little documentation, and it all moves so fast you have to view it on a different scale.

Literally anyone anywhere in the world can easily purchase a laptop and tablet capable of running incredibly powerful software and then reach a professional level in several years using one of the countless resources online. We went from an age where there was no information online and you needed to go to Art Center to make it in the industry (other than the rare forum post from a pro with some spare time there was nothing online). Now we can spend $3 on a gumroad for hours of content, or take entire courses led by industry leaders and get personalized feedback, or watch free videos that walk you through every step of every software or purchase a book like the ones by Gurney or Robertson that covers more than most courses at top art schools. The industry is run by a young generation of largely self taught people--most people in the industry are under 40, and many are even under 30. You're getting more and more people now in their late teens and early 20's who are working professionally at fairly high levels.

The inherent "illegitimacy" of digital has nothing to do with what it produces or the quality of it. It's just that it is a digital file that can be copied infinitely and doesn't exist in a physical form, so has no value. It's the same as how a woodblock print costs less than an oil painting, except the effect is magnified infinitely.

Software is also getting scarily good. The stuff possible in 3d realtime now is better than stuff that would take hours to render before. Take a look at what people like Jama Jurabaev (he talks of some things he is doing in his interview on Collective Podcast) or Maciej are doing with different programs. This shit is insane and only going to get easier to do. The skill level required and the time required for things now is getting lower and lower as software fills in the gaps.

This is the Golden Age man, don't let it slip by as you wait for it to come.

The illegitimacy I see isn't the usual case of it being easily copied, it's that it isn't its own thing yet. There is nothing you can do that can't be done better in another medium. It's changing, but as of yet there is no truly native technique, just those pulled from other mediums. Undo and photomanipulation tools and filters aren't it and the amalgamation of it all still hasn't found a native voice. I think VR will be the thing that changes that if a new program with a uniquely digital look doesn't come first. 3D animation already made that jump and can do what physical media cannot without being creepy stop motion.

This is why I say we aren't quite to the Golden Age. Everything is there or near enough, but the primordial soup of memes that is tumblr hasn't finished incubating what will herald it in. The industry is young, but those prodigies still need to mature and make something of value with focus instead of generic concept art with no inherent narrative. It's coming very soon, but there still hasn't been that landmark work. Illustration has only barely come out of the hole digital dug for comic books in the late 90s.

>There is nothing you can do that can't be done better in another medium
Sure there are. You can do 3d sculptures that couldn't physically exist. You can do paintings that utilize fractals or other computer generated imagery (think Android Jones). You can paint with very digital markmaking and cleanliness (think Sparth or Alberto Mielgo). You can utilize photos for collage on steroids like Maciej does. You can rework thing infinitely and experiment endlessly. You can use modular components for numerous design iterations. You have infinitely more control with things especially in 3d settings. Instead of doing a matte painting on glass and putting it behind, you can build the whole thing in 3d and have it look even more real and integrate much better and have things actually animated in it as well.

It's an infinitely flexible medium and a very fast one. No, it doesn't do "oil paint" as well as real oil paint. But it does its own things better than oils can.

I was talking specifically about painting and already said sculpture crossed the gap. I'll give you markmaking in part and I guess collage, but the rest is more the concern of design than art. The design iterations and reworking are also what I see as a flaw. Sometimes (usually), it's just better to start over from scratch. The work is made to be fixed instead of done right the first time. Watching most digital artists work is pig disgusting because of those things. There are fundamental flaws that need a clean sheet to fix and no amount of lasso tool will save it.

I have 18th century etchings and ukiyo-e woodblocks and they all posses an undeniable quality that a digital print does not. Some is the physical depth of ink on paper, but there is something else. This is what digital still lacks. I think VR will be able to provide it, if not with physical presence, then something else.

I will compromise and say we are coming into the golden age, it is here, but hasn't had the game changed from what came before it yet. It's too design focused and you end up with a nebulous product instead of art that can be sold. I expect illustration to make the breakthrough before painting, we're long overdue for a comic or even a children's book of mindblowing quality driven by the art, art which couldn't be done any other way.

>>2240837
Alright sounds like we actually agree on most things then. I think for illustration/design digital has opened up tons of things, but as far as expressive work or whatever that undefinable quality is that is present in ukiyo-e and etchings it still falls short, I agree. As for new advancements in art with aesthetics or whatever, it is on its way for sure, but I think is still too young a medium to have any game changing things in images in general. Oils techniques and styles have developed over centuries, digital is a few decades old, and came at a time when draftsmanship and art education were at an all time low. It's shifting now for sure though, and I feel within out lifetimes there will be some major steps forward in art history.

In his drawings and designs most importantly I like his shape language and lines. There's a kind of a waviness to it, for example his mecha's aren't rigid but instead very rounded and smooth.

Funnily enough the waviness in his sketches translates to his animation as well, if you look at the flames in this scene http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/15754/animated-creatures-dantalian_no_shoka-effects-fire The way his timing works in a lot of his movement is this constant easing in and out. It's flow-y, kinda.

>This is the Golden Age man

It's the beginning of the end actually. 25 years ago you could call yourself a graphic designer, beacuse your work was largely knowledge and skill based, with tools just being tools. Nowadays any inbred moron can call himself a graphic designer, and create work that is indistinguishable from that of other highly educated graphic designers. The tools are so powerful that a million crutches fill in those gaps.

Digital art is very close to that. No skill required. Already the level of skill necessary to produce impressive digital art is quite low, and in another 10 years the tools will do 90% of the work, and any moron will be able to produce mullins/ruanjia level work without a sweat or years (or decades) of training and practice.

This is why pros jump ship now. They know it's all fake bullshit. If you go into digital art trying to make it your profession you are a fucking idiot and will die poor, lonely and miserable.

If you spent the last 4 years studying art fundamentals and art principles religiously, thinking that this sacrifice will pay off and allow you to have a good career as a digital artist of some sorts... you'll fucking feel silly when five years from now the software is good enough to allow any imbecile to produce work at the level of yours, without them ever having to study anything. That's when you'll wish you had gone into ANY respectable career/field rather than this fake bullshit.

And this is coming from someone who is working professionally atm. Hurr.

Actually as someone who is "pro" your opinions are biased because you do have background knowledge.
Its easy enough to pretend tools do so much work when you're understanding what they do and how they do it. Naturally they do help a large amount and reduce the amount of learning you need to do, but you do need to still understand the tools and basic design principles.

Take hacking for example, once you have basic computer knowledge and understanding of architecture and basic programming knowledge, it becomes as simple as running a few scripts. In fact, once you know how to "hack" you're basically just clicking a few buttons while watching netflix.
But give the same tools to someone who has no idea what they're doing, its all just numbers and gibberish.
As someone who knows what to look for, its easy to say "oh look the tool is doing all the work, this is stupid and I'm going to lose my job" but seeing a new guy or someone inexperienced look at it, I quickly realize how stupid the average person is when not in their territory.

I just hate how digital feels. Its convenient as fuck but might as well be an office job. Tho >>2241899 is right. It took me ages to learn my baby knowledge of photoshop, before it got conveniently simple to use. That barrier is still there. I just realized after the fact that It felt like a soulless 9 to 5 job instead of something i liked to do.

Though i do agree that probably people who dont actually have a real ability can thrive now. They just have to learn a different approach and set of tools instead, and end up in the same place.
