Does anyone have a nice collection of crosshatched drawings? this is pretty basic but something really dope? I wanna start studying crosshatch so I can do nicer pen drawings that have shading

Honestly I don't think your lines are confident enough to start hatching.

It looks like it's easy but you just need time, but it's quite a challenge and mentally demanding.

You need to first understand very well what you're hatching to make it look right and I think it's a good practice for anyone who draws, but I suggest you start first doing gesture drawings directly with a pen. Take your time and try to make the pose as accurate as you can and using fewer lines than you normally would, with confident strokes defining the form. Do that exercise as a warm-up and it'll make your lines gradually better and more confident, I guarantee it. :)

the hatching is great but the anatomy looks all busted. Like, wtf is up with the nose? And the part where the bridge of the nose attaches to the brow is clearly wrong. I think it's very important for portrait drawing to get the feel of the form of that particular part of the head; you can get away with fudging things like the ears or the cranium, but that part is what people stare at during conversation so it's pretty important to get it right. IMO.

Am I the only one who thinks the intense use of black ink in american comics clashes badly with the colors? Cause in pixel art that's considered pretty much a cardinal sin. So why is it cool for comics to do it? It looks pretty bad imo. To be clear, I think it looks great in monochrome. Just not with color. Like, it would look better if the inner outlines where a very dark shade of the fill color.

>> No.2235770

>>2235758
It used to be that comics were printed on cheap-as-shit newsprint, so bright saturated colors where pretty much a requirement to not have everything look muddy, and the deep blacks helped to define forms.

Now you've got people doing that same shit, but since it's not printed on newsprint it looks completely different and a lot shittier.

>> No.2235772

>> No.2235786

So would it be feasible now, with a reasonable cost, to print comics with subtler darks? Cuz look at the pink of the face, it really clashes with the black hatching. It would probably look better if the hatching could be an arbitrary color, but I wonder if it would be possible to print something like that.

>> No.2235796

>>2235786
>So would it be feasible now, with a reasonable cost, to print comics with subtler darks?
You can basically color however the fuck you like in comics now, they print them on nice glossy paper with much better printers(which is why a 28 page book with 8 pages of ads costs $4).

>> No.2235887

I think with cross hatching, what people tend to neglect is the actual contours and line weight, including where lines taper. A great deal of the effect of good cross hatching is not only in the hatching, but in the contours especially with regards to short hands which, having a good enough control and judicious variety, the work looks to be rather more on the effortless side than on labored, which many people working with cross hatching now tend to do.

It seems many think that the appeal of cross hatching, being made up of individual strokes rather than masses of shades, is in the viewer's sense of the patience it must have taken, like with drawing a whole picture with tiny dots. Keep in mind that working with hatches arose out of sketches and for quickly putting to paper ideas. It's a natural way to draw, and the drawings should look natural, excepting for cases of finished prints, which were historically to be produced by mass so more effort naturally were assigned to them. However the same principles of good hatching in sketches can be seen still in more patient prints.

Hatching in general has been my go-to as of late. I've been too busy to sit down and do digital so I've done a lot more pencil work. It looks way better than unshaded or solid shading imo.

To be honest, a critique coming from someone who can't draw a stickman for shit to me is not valuable, even if you're "knowledgeable". But that's just me, many argue against it. You can only speak from a spectator view, and say I like this or I don't, but don't start correcting people on stuff you can't do. the only thing you can critique on this is the chibi art, the anatomy, but what's interesting in it is the technique, not the subject.

and i'm not implying that you can't draw a stickman, i'm just using a generalizing "you".
