Nice man, very clean and controlled. It's a bit odd that you polished the face so much and neglected the rest of the head (not even blocked in!). I think too you went a bit hard on some edges and can do with a bit of softening of the form in places, maybe just glaze a bit over some areas with an airbrush carefully.

So yes, try to eyeball it even if you're not training your eye for color, you don't lose anything by doing so and you gain a lot.

>> No.2225023

>>2224869

There's no specific way you're "supposed" to study, it depends on your goals.
If your objective is "eyeballing colors" then obviously color picking won't help much.
If you're purely at the "identifying colors" point then it helps a lot. Obviously better to test your knowledge and try to eyeball it later, though.

thank you, that's because I literally have 0 technique as this is my second study ever. coming from Lineart type of drawings, I just can't for the life of me work with huge blocks of colors/values. It becomes way too much to handle for some reason, so I just work detail by detail until the part is finished and then I pass to an other.

Pic related was my first study a while back from the study thread here, and as you can see, I need to draw lines first. I also can't finish them, cause to me this is waaaay too time consuming and boring.

Your value hierarchy is a bit off. Speaking in terms of a binary light/shadow divide, a lot of your light shapes look like they belong to the darks. You've also darkened all of your lights except for some specular reflections that you added, which further hurts the light/shadow divide.

Some of your edges (especially around the eyes) are a lot harder than they need to be. Makes some areas look overmodeled.

Hm, not sure why it would be too much to handle. It's actually easier to keep all your values and such in check when you work the whole canvas at once since everything is relative.

Here's a demo I did for an anon like a year ago. It's a bit more structured an approach than I actually use (I tend to do several steps at once) but maybe it will help a bit?

holy shit, that's exactly how I want to do it, even though the way I did it works, it's fucking tiring and boring. always thought this method would be easier and faster, but when I tried it ended up being a huge shit fest and didn't really know what next thing to do. I actually saved this pic a while ago but never really looked at it, this is great, thx.

also, are you the one who did this one ? I also saved it cause this is exactly the part I struggle with.

Glad it helps then. Out of curiosity, how long did those studies take you? If I remember correctly that demo was done in around 45 minutes, including the making of it with the steps and writing. I think speed comes more with efficiency of thinking and markmaking more than a specific technique, but there are certain approaches that are typically faster, or are faster for certain things.

And no, that image you posted wasn't done by me.

the first one was around an hour, the new one was minimum 2/3 hours. And yeah, I know that's slow, that's because I literally can't move on unless I REALLY finish the eye for exemple.

Honestly, I am learning so much from these studies. This is the third one I've ever done and already I'm learning about the baffling amount of subtleties needed with painting skin. I'll probably finish this later but any advise is helpful. I am still very much new to this.

Question, is it considered a bad habit to use the top layer painting to correct garbage underlying linework or is that normal? Because I notice that I do it ALOT when I can't quite get my lines to go where I want them to and just sort of feel it out with colors.

nose is too thin around the middle. Her left cheek is too sharp.

sizing of right eye is too close to its eyebrow. Eyelashes on same eye could use re sizing

more diagonal angle in the right cheekbone. it goes too far upward, and makes her face look thinner/older, when you want round/young

the lips. yours is kinda restrained looking, and its cuz of the edges where the darkest shadows lie. the models lips are more straight and revealed, than tucked into shadow.

you might benefit from pushing your lights just a liiiitle bit further because the lighting in the breast area is muted in comparison. Also, you need to take care to watch the proportions of the figure. The flank area is a little too rounded. You need more of a slope. I do enjoy the rendering in blue though. it's aesthetically pleasing on the eyes

Tried again, half tracing this time to get it right. A bit better but I still don't know what I'm doing.

I feel you man. I'm in the same boat but trying to go monochrome first to break shitty habits I had in full color. But this looks alright so far. You doing this from a picture or from life?

I'm just learning how to mix colors in my painting class, but to do it digitally I would follow the method of using a palette to mix from ctrlpaint's mixing paint video: http://www.ctrlpaint.com/dp101-3

but in my class, he simply mixed the color with more and more white to get lighter and lighter values. he went through all of the paints we'd be using and make a 7 step value chart by starting with the color, and slowly adding more and more white.

pic is a value scale with many more steps but you don't have to go harder than 7 to start out

Spent about an hour fifteen on this. Meant to be a warm-up but got carried away.

Drawing is super off, I should have spent more time getting that right from the beginning. The light intensity change was intentional. Don't know if I'll continue.

This one was from a photo, I did one from real life the other day and it turned out pretty decent somehow.

Worked on an extra tiny canvas without realizing it. Anything I should focus more on?

very unfinished but i find rendering so tedious and time-consuming... I try to go from big to small but i feel my brush economy is awful. how do you cut down on strokes but still get smooth vaue transitions and blending and such?
