Artist from the image here, yeah it was really just lazyness. And I know where the reflection should have started, but making it closer to the surface would have blended it into the mouth section, whick looked not that good. So I decided to put it further done for the sake of the visibility of the head.

Anyway, thanks for the tips guys, I'll try to do it better next time.

welcome and keep drawing! you should resize pics, to improve things like that you should play with secondary color pen, so you can attempt to outline it softly and then do it again with your main pen, so you correct all things you didn't nail in the first place, the more you repeat this process, the better you'll do without being used at catching proportions

you have no shadows and barely any midtones. you should be drawing on a midtone paper with a white pencil and a soft dark pencil like a 2b or more. refer to scale. as you get comfortable with tones, you should have these memorized since you are working with graphite.

or just draw on computer paper with an hb pencil and stay pleb, idc.

Resize your work. ~3k for either height or width is pushing it.
Her side's right eye is too small compared to the other eye, and the face is awkwardly proportioned. Try lifting the mouth.
I personally like how you drew most of the hands. Good work. Her right lower hand looks somewhat sloppy compared to the rest, however.
The upper part is also awkward when compared to how carefully you've made some other parts of the drawing. Refine this.

The horns are too asymetrical at this head position, one is at the height of the ear the other one is behind the ear. Hands need some work, especially the thumbs. Where is the main light source? Looking at the face and some armor parts you see a light source from the right side. Looking at hands, boobs and other armor parts you see one from the left side. Light source for horns and shoulder plates is from above? Where is the root of the second pair of hands? Is it under the first one? In that case the gloves should be placed slightly further down (and maybe the whole arm?).
The image is of course still very sexy (although I prefer them without catears). Ty for sharing.

you should doing light cuts that way, it's awfull, that's not how it works, use layer effects as "soft light" and you'll see a difference between droping a opaque and too saturated color over your painting with making subtle hues of ambient light

don't use airbrush to make SHADING when it's CAST SHADOW, face for example should have clean linesof shadow due to the haircut

so it as you did the skin, but with focus and thinking where is the light source

skin seem lighted like she's outside
there should be one main light source: sun
then it's the sky, which also reflects residual light back, so darks made by main light are cut down by that secondary spreaded light source

materials have different properties against light, ones make textures, others make speculars (like wet skin), metal things are like close to mirrors, draw paralel lines with the direction of the light you want over your picture, hit the planes you think are more perpendicular to the main light source, that way you'll be able to think where it's gonna hit more bright, where less bright, and were it's gonna cast shadows

before painting any values on that picture, limit yourself just to draw small arrows and write down how you plan to put the lighting main source
secondary
shadows
cast shadows
reflected light affecting shadows
and so on

We're in the field of visual problem solving. What better way to solve others' problems than to do it visually as well?

When you take an art course, do you expect the instructor to only verbally describe what you should do, or do you expect to see visual examples. When it comes time to demo, do you expect words that describe a technique, or do you expect to see the technique in action?

Likewise, not all visual problems are easily and accurately described with only words. Unless you already know that everyone's on the same page, it's often easier/better/more practical to show instead of tell.

Not the anon you replied to, nor the anon who did the paintover.

You know, my professor never painted over my work (strawman argument, I know) never even pointed at what I was doing and said, "add warm lighting on this side, hitting the subject in this and that way." that would be a stupid way of explaining things since I would only know what to do, not understand why I was doing it.

He was always doing his own work, explaining things with simple shapes to understand the concept. Visual examples are key to understanding the medium but paintovers are spoonfeeding.

The problem good be a bad reference photo. Poor lighting or glaring lens distortion will doom you from the start unless you're skilled at portrait drawing.

It can also help to slightly exaggerate the notable features of the face for a 'stronger' likeness. Don't be afraid to let the model's personality affect how you approach the portrait.

light cut is correct, the path to grow as an artist you have ahead is aobut thinking what is gonna make that kind of lights, so you make them with meaning related to backgrounds or whatever

put the hand with the rose hit by the main lighting, you've choosed a very favorable light source for that composition

one thing i forgot to point is speculars (white dots formed when light bounces to the point of veiw), you might want to add these on the hair for example

You need a better understanding of gesture if you want to draw like Mucha. Draw large continuous lines but only put line weight on the leading edges of forms that are moving. If something isn't moving it should be invisible.

Then when you have that down try using one continuous line to draw a silhouette for everything WITHOUT DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN DIFFERENT MASSES. For example there should be no line clearly separating the hair and the face or the hands and the clothing. In your head you should imagine shining a laser pointer really fast around the silhouette of the entire figure in a clockwise loop. The silhouette line is completely flat and is only to help blockin the figure.

Did a sloppy paintover on this to demonstrate a couple of things.

Squint at your image and you should notice that you don't have a lot of value contrast going on. In a complex scene like a cityscape, grouping shapes by value is an extremely tool to make sure that your image is clear and makes a good impact on the viewer without overwhelming. One simple way to do this is by grouping based on depth - in the paintover I made all the foreground objects darker and the middle/background objects lighter. You could just as easily do the reverse.

Another important concept in all paintings but especially ones with a very large scale like this is atmospheric perspective. Without getting too verbose, the rule of thumb for atmospheric perspective is that everything reduces: contrast, saturation, edge definition. This results in a "washed out look" for distant objects.

Another thing you can benefit from is a stronger light source. It seemed to me like you wanted the light to be coming in from the upper left so I sought to emphasize that. In addition to lighter lights and darker darks, having a warm/cool disparity between lights and darks can really help to sell the lighting.

In the future it would be a good idea to plan out your values in black and white ahead of time in thumbnails - it only takes a few minutes and will drastically improve your results down the line as well as save time.

Hope this helps!

Ah okay. This is a very challenging study because you have a few things working against you. The proximity of the camera to the subject is creating a lot of distortion, in addition to this angle and facial expression being tricky in the first place. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but this is what you're working against.

Where your painting is having the most trouble right now is structure - it feels like you are trying to copy the shapes in the image without understanding the planes of the head. For instance your eye sockets are warped and kind of floating around. Also the key (primary) light in the photos is coming from the upper left but you lost that in the painting as it looks like the face is lit from all sides. Also your shadows are way too dark to the point of being black basically. The eyes are very symbolic right now, and you've made the common mistake of making the whites too light. Squint at the photo and you should see that the whites of the eyes aren't even noticably lighter than the shadows in the sockets.

Where to go from here? I think you could learn a lot by doing this same study again from scratch and focusing on a couple of things. There's no need to spend as much time on the rendering and finer details on the additional study so it shouldn't take a lot of time. Basically try to accomplish these two steps: the first and hardest part is draw out the structure of the head. If you feel lost here look up "planes of the head for artists" or something like that on google and you should find plenty of reference. Getting a smile right is pretty tough so don't get discouraged here. The next step is to squint at your photo and group the values into two large shapes. One is the light shape created by the key light, and the rest is the shadow. These are the most important parts of lighting - ambient light, reflected light, occlusion shadows, and specular highlights are all secondary to this.

Ran through this myself as a visual aid:

>> No.2229038

>>2228987
I think you could push your lights brighter. Also you have a lot of soft shadow edges where they should be hard, mainly in the dress area. Also if you did a quick pass on occlusion shadows using a multiply layer it would help sell the realism of the lighting as well. Oh and skin never has those really sharp specular highlights unless it's extremely oily; it's just a bad habit.

Overall I think it's pretty successful. If you upgrade your lighting to the same level of your drawing and rendering you'll be able to do some cool shit

only warm colors on your wip, except for ultra cold and saturated colors on the rose. You need to balance colors a bit, use color picker and compare the color position of the rose colors with rest of the color palette you made, it's so far, the contrast is too huge, make a better contrast, if you put a red or brown layer with 20-30% opacity over that rose, there you go, it's gonna get integrated and it will still read as purple and green (and look what happens on the color wheel so you can learn what is happening)

You've been too conservative with colors, but you've done it well
