Well he's not wrong. Her stuff does lack substance and feels somewhat generic-contemporary-fine-artist. Like a blend of portraits and abstract backgrounds. That being said, they are executed at a high level and are pretty nice to look at. But it's not something I would bother saving or look up to.

No matter the subject, it all depends on the artist. A great artist can paint two old shoes and makes it interesting.

Also there's nothing wrong with space marine portraits. But hatin' on a girl who's still studying? Let's draw space marines all we want and let her draw girls as much as she feels like it, she has the time to get it out of her body and move on to other things.

He's got some good info in his books, but I'm not sure if he's the best for beginners, and his stuff tends to either click or not work at all. Some of his info is a bit dated too. Overall they are pretty solid books though.

Not really. People namedrop Loomis because it's faster than to always go into detail whenever a beginner posts his work and wants advice. It's always the same basics they are lacking and they are all covered by Loomis' books, hence he kind of became a meme.

Like with the portrait you posted, it's pointless to go into a detailed crit because the very basic construction is just wrong and all over the place. Hence I'd recommend you to look at Loomis head construction. Not because I think he is some kind of incredible art god, but because he covers everything noobs like you suck at.

Nothing in his books are "outdated." A digital artist could use any of the techniques mentioned in Eye of the Painter or any of his other books.

I wouldn't call the entirety of his books outdated, but certain parts certainly are. Whether it's fashion stuff like the hairstyles or makeup, or the way he draws the waist, or if it is something more like how he talks about the industry of illustration. A lot has changed since he wrote those books. Obviously the more fundamental things like values and perspective will remain relevant, but there definitely are some sections that are a little dated.

Yeah, I went from Jack Hamm to Vilppu, then read Loomis' books after ending up here and he's just a tad bit more advanced/in depth than Hamm but somehow makes drawing feel like an esoteric chore while Hamm makes it super barebones and easy.

I feel Loomis really isn't good for begginger or advanced artists unless you're a turbonoob/kid, then FWAP is awesome.
