I have some problem with digital
first, I can't find a brush setting in Sai that gives me an absolutely defined line. everything just gets some tone shading on its edges apart the binary tool. second, I can't draw straight lines. meaning, the tablet is too sensible and reads the imperfections on its own surface, making any ample movement wobbly if not done fast enough. I tried already to change the sensivity settings but nothing .hope you guys can help me with these.

Still a little too big, aim for max. 1100px in height next time :D

Before approaching color work I suggest playing with greyscale values for a while, draw simple 3D objects, make up your own complex shapes, apply different sources of light to the same picture and play and understand the rules of shadows and how they affect the shapes. The next step would be to draw simple still lifes like pottery or something in grey scale and finally approach humans. To have a smooth transition at the start I would suggest to approach color by painting over your greyscale work on an overlaying layer set to multiply or anything else appropiate.

Starting to paint with color is quite a jump-start since there are tools and possibilites with working digitally that allow you an easy build-up

What the other anon said about tone, and you also need to be decisive about which direction the light comes from, your image suggest both from the left and front depending on what you look at. You can leave some parts in shade, not everything has to be lit up.

>Trying to simplify my workflow and not take as much time to add details too early.
You can go further in that sense. Try using a much larger brush (larger than you think you can use for a given area) and lay down flat, simple value shapes. Overlap your brush strokes to achieve smaller shapes if necessary. Also, try to limit the number of values you use - aim for a simple read.

Once you have that working, you can go in and refine your big shapes into slightly smaller shapes, and correct your edges as needed. Try not to destroy the initial shapes you made though. Assuming your initial value statement was solid, you want the thumbnail view of your refined painting to look pretty damn similar to the reduced value base.

I made a quick paintover to try to show what I mean. The image in the middle is a reduced value block-in, though I didn't really address any drawing issues (especially with the body). The image on the right is a few minutes of the initial refinement process. You'd theoretically keep refining, adding new values only where absolutely necessary and leaning towards subtlety as to not destroy your initial shapes.

It helps to mentally group all the lit shapes as one unit, and all the shadow shapes as one unit. That binary divide makes for an easy read.

use some vertical gradient layers to multiply bg and figures
don't tell me you're only in 1 layer
think about local contrasts, figures are going good, but bg need more of that soft shadows more spread, grass and flag need longer local value range, push contrast with color on grass and flag
that armour edges are awsome, but that face is meh, be carefull with the light bricks over his right shoulder, that should be dark, avoid that kind of unintentional coincidences

Painting every brick won't help. When you have that many repeating shapes it gets very boring to have them all rendered out, and even in this case it doesn't even make sense. It would A) draw a lot mroe attention to them for no real reason (they're not the focal point) and B) would make the image weaker because their perspective is wonky, and C) isn't what bricks on a structure that large and far away would look like anyhow.

I think it would be better handled if you had some different textures within that wall, maybe in some places the bricks are more obvious and in others it is more subtle.

Overall the image is alright but feels a bit heavy/muddy. There's a lot more light in scenes than most people realize, especially in the evening and morning. If you ever spend some time outside and take mental notes you will realize there's a lot of light, both direct and ambient (people usually forget how much fill light there is). Anyways, I brought more of that warm sunlight in and really bumped up the flag behind his head. You have it placed there nice and conveniently but aren't using it! Get some more contrast there--both in value and colour.

I would have liked to make more changes, but my computer is lagging out really bad and I am getting tired of waiting 3 seconds after each brushstroke for it to appear.

Think a bit more on function--how do the joints work? Where do we see out of it? What is the purpose of this particular mech (military, exploratory, public transport, garbage truck, construction etc)? How do you get in and out of it? Where does the engine sit? Is there an exhaust port? How is it built (are there panels?)? How will it be identified (stickers, numbers, decals, crests)? How many people can fit in it? Does it have weapons? Will it need communication things (satellite dish, antenna etc)? Is anything impractical about the design and how can you fix it? What is it made of? Is it new or rusted and worn down?

Just start asking yourself questions about the machine and then find the answers and figure out how to show it. I just listed some off the top of my head, but you can come up with more I'm sure.

As always, when completely stuck try to find some reference to get an idea of how they are constructed or what elements are often included.

I assume that's supposed to be a female because of the lips.If that's the case you should make note that when drawing females you generally need to soften the features. You generally want to use more subtle changes in values and softer edges in areas such as the lips for example.I'm not saying you have to take the image in the same direction as I did,but hopefully this gives you an idea of what it could look like if these issues were adressed.
I know I ended up changing the character quite a bit but I hope this helps.

Study up on anatomy, that jawline is pretty darn sloped. And it sort of seems like you're just symbol drawing with the eyes, mouth, etc. Also, it's hard to truly see your values with a pure white canvas; even bucketing it with slight gray will go a long way.

you shouldn't paint on a white canvas. start with a mid tone grey.

i also recommend trying not to add details so early, you should block out the basic values first and gradually start adding detail as you you're building the drawing.

your david study shows that you have a decent understanding of form and lighting (except in the hair. you need to construct the hair! construct everything), just keep practicing

I'd just continue to paint over it with any brush that has a small amount of texture. I'd stay clear of "hair texture" brushes, as you'll often get too much visual noise with fine strands everywhere. Study how people like Sargent and Leyendecker paint hair, and how most of the detail is implied.

I tried a paintover, mostly for myself to see how I'd approach the hair. Figured I might as well post it. I feel that the colors you used for the hair are too high in saturation (the lights, mids and darks). You also have too much contrast in value, which is more apparent in the grayscale version. I tried toning down both the saturation and the contrast, attempting to get the hair to read as one clear shape in terms of overall value.

I butchered the face in mine, but I'm procrastinating enough so I left it as is. Feel free to disregard that part.

the contrast thing i'd actually noticed, especially with the face so low contrast - the way i'm doing things now is tackling the big parts bit by bit rather than a whole, which ends up with a lot of contrast and color mismatches i've been fixing in the post-painting part of it. if you've got any advice on keeping the whole composition in mind while you polish, i'd love to hear it.

you won't gain anything from trying to make something out of this because what you need is some fundamental knowledge, and you can achieve this by doing some master studies, taking what you learn and doing another one.

There's a fuckton of things wrong with your piece and the only valid criticism is to take it back to fundamentals. Not only is the anatomy fucked but there is zero painting technique. Doing a few master studies where you can observe, lighting, form and structure in one exercise is an effective way to learn. Anatomy is only one of many problems with that. You need to start again from the beginning, if you get this fucking butthurt every time you receive criticism then you will never improve, don't act like it's me who has the problem though

his work lacks pretty much everything dude, he needs fundamentals and anatomy is only the start of a big list. when your this much of a beginner you cant have your work crit like that because the only way to fix it is to work on your fundamentals and start fresh

I agree with this anon. Lighting will only make sense when you understand form. It's pretty clear you do not understand form yet, since anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of the skull and basic understanding of forms would be able to make a better skull than that.

It's no shame to have difficulty with forms. It's tough. Everybody can benefit from a little more fundamentals every once in a while. No exceptions. Draw some boxes, mate.
