Yeah his line quality and general markmaking shows he has a lot of experience under his belt, but that drawing isn't anything special and looks pretty bad. I'm getting grossed out by all the Picasso around here lately. I think he's important, a very good artist. But he's like da vinci, it's become more about the icon of Picasso than the actual art of Picasso. His name is a cliche at this point. He's famous because he happened to become the face of a time period in the same way da vinci became the face of the renaissance. Just like the Mona Lisa, a vast majority of the stuff is extremely overrated. I'm not trying to downplay his achievements, just saying that all the gushing is largely baseless.

Also like Da Vinci, a huge percentage of the people infatuated with him actually know very little about art history. It's the guy everyone knows, it makes you look like you have a very limited and narrow knowledge of art history.

Remove the name picasso for a sec and actually analyze the work. Most of it's very boring stuff. It's uninspired, it doesn't have that drive of passion behind it like a lot of other famous artists. If I saw this without the signature, I'd think this was a very boring person. Maybe it was your selection here because he did kick out some work with powerful emotion (some of the blue paintings, Guernica) but I honestly think it was the exception to the rule.

Look at Rembrandt, Raphael, Titian, Cezanne, or Van Gogh. I think they all had more spirit and more lively personalities than Picasso

Look, I'm not denying the influence of name on people's love of art. I am always the first to admit that its of utmost importance. Picasso realized it too. (You can see it in the picture I quoted. He's perpetuating the myth of the artist as genius.) Just because art is branded does not make it worse. It does not mean you have to adjust how much you like it to 'compensate' for the brand. If its not to your taste, that's cool, but you should at least attempt to understand why people find him so interesting. Dismissing them as dumb or tasteless really doesn't help anyone.

I know what cubism is man, I took art history in high school and all through college. God do I know cubism, I got that shit pounded into me for years. In my drawing class the prof loved duchamp cezanne and picasso so he made us draw using there philosophies all the time.

Also having a massive output doesn't make you a better artist. Monet started that, he would kick out 3 paintings a day and then sold it to everyone like it made him some sort of creative genius. I bet that's why Picasso did it, he was aspiring to have the same reputation. The thing with picasso is (and I'm basically quoting my freshman teacher obsessed with cubism here) everything looks the same, just another picasso and then every once in a while he would stubble upon something. Another words, having a huge output doesn't mean having a huge output of good work. In the end Picasso had about the same amount of masterpieces as artists who worked at a slower pace. Vermeer was a notoriously slow artist with an extremely limited output but literally every piece is a jaw dropping masterpiece. Picasso shit out tons of work but a majority is unchanging garbage with masterpieces here and there.

But I disagree with you, he was a great artist, I love a lot of his work. I just think people go wayy overboard with it and only know him while ignoring a lot of other great modern artists. Not to mention a lot of the artists that made picasso's career even possible, without cezanne and certain impressionists he would have been a nobody. And a lot of his inspiration came from african art being shown in france as well. He basically just continued what they started. And he wasn't the only one doing it, matisse had his own version based on african art, picasso was just more fashionable.

It really bothers me when this happens to artists. Once you reach a certain level within pop culture (in art this is when stuff is plastered on mugs and umbrellas) you lose meaning and impact. This happens with Van Gogh, Mucha, Klimt, Hokusai, and plenty of others. It means that certain artworks can't really be fully appreciated anymore because it is so engrained in your conscious as an iconic thing that you can't look at it with fresh eyes or an objectivity. Now, let me give my completely unsolicited opinion with why I think Picasso is a fun artist to look at: he's an interesting decision maker. Let me quote the one I just talked about above.

-It is unclear what the man is wearing. His right arm appears to show the outline of a shirt sleeve, but there's no evidence of this elsewhere. Yet, it is the part of the man that is closest to us, so his attire or lack of it constantly changes with how you see it.
-What the fuck is he drawing? Its completely incomprehensible. The artist is transforming what he sees in front of him to a vision so inspired and genius, we can't even understand it. This is an admittedly very very arrogant boast, which Picasso was of course famous for.

Let me hear some thoughts! Post a masterpiece! Tell me why you don't think any of Picasso's works are interesting! I want to hear it! Spell it out for me! Help!
