leyendecker has really solid draftsmanship and color. you can study his color theory or his draftsmanship, or both.

what makes him especially great to study is how he simplifies the body's curves into harder lines and edges, and that you can oftentimes see the separate brush strokes in his work, which cues you into his process.

That's lazy symbol drawing. Noses are very complex and should be learnt correctly prior to stylisation and abstraction.

Same here, but with hair. It just goes straight into detailed rendering without laying down solid forms and base values. Think of hair as planes just like any other part of an image, then detail it once the forms are believable, otherwise it looks like a flat mess.

I think once you understand the complexity of the human body, you will learn that everything is just as hard. You have to analyse so much and learn so much about anatomy and perspective, it's fucking unbelievable.

Even straight up copying is extremely hard once the angles go beyond full frontal and 3/4, everything after that, you need to either measure the shit out of, or know the anatomy and see what the face is made of.

>> No.2187403

>>2184950

That's part of the problem. We look at faces all the fucking time. It's very easy for somebody to notice when something is off about a portrait because we're wired for facial recognition.

Nothing against you anon, but I fucking hate the term 'shading'. It's become a blanket that covers everything from value gradation to texture to edge control.

The correct word for what you're talking about is rendering. When you first draw the basic construction lines of a subject, that's sketching. Going from a sketch to a finished drawing is done by rendering the detail, which is a multi step process that involves a lot of variables you have to keep in mind. These variables include but are not limited to, light source direction and intensity, reflectivity levels of the subject and surrounding areas, the different steps for achieving texture, etc.

When one draws a fully rendered piece, they make a blueprint of sketch, they work out the variables, and they build up the image with layers of details and markings until the desired effects are achieved. In the same way you have to lay the foundation of a house before you build walls, and the walls come before the roof trusses, and the roof itself comes even later, with the wiring and plumbing and drywall being the last considerations, you have to be the architect of your artwork for every step, make sure the walls fit the foundation, don't build a roof then try to fit the foundation underneath, and so on.

To do this you practice intensely with every step. You start with getting your blueprint making process so it's comfortable and fast. Then you work on getting confident laying a foundation. Once you can make a sketch and build up the basic forms and values, you can move upwards and begin making more and more finished pieces until you can efficiently and happily draw finished pieces in one sitting, you can identify future errors based on tiny mistakes you make in the foundation, and your finished product not only satisfies you but also anyone you may happen to be selling it to.

This goes way beyond your casual word choice of course, just felt like ranting a bit. Have a good day anon.
