few things:
don't worry so much about getting the anatomy right besides your proportions, just make sure the limbs and masses of the body look 3 dimensional - imagine limbs as tubes and draw contour lines to make sure the direction of the limb is right
try to avoid using a totally grey background when painting in colour, this goes for the armour as well - even if its just the lightest little bit of saturation
if you can get values right, the colours will be very forgiving, so focus on that, especially for the armour
Also work bigger, dont worry about little details atm cos you're gonna have to paint over them again and again until colours and values are sorted - work from big to small

not done the most incredible paintover, but just a few little suggestions in there to work with

Is this from a mirror? The proportions seem a bit odd, like the features feel a bit small for the head, and the ears seem really big/sticking out a lot.

Overall it is fairly well painted, though some slight perspective issues (nose out of perspective, slight other features perspective issues). The painting looks a bit muddy too. I think it is the way the highlights are really desaturated, like it is a very white light despite the warm skintones and room. If the light was that cool then the whole painting would have a cool cast to it. Or it's more of a specular light that would be that more white colour, in which case it wouldn't be so spread out.

Edges are handles quite nicely overall, though a few places are a little too hard. The shirt collar has a razor edge on it, same with the jaw and the cast shadow on the neck. If they were just a tiny bit softer (but still hard) then I htink it would be much nicer.

It's got pretty nice control for a first attempt. That being said, it's by no means a great painting.

Not much point in giving a ton of advice now though since you are so new and still need to get used to working digitally. My advice is to just knock out a lot of paintings now, both quick ones and a couple long ones. Don't get too caught up in texture brushes but do experiment with them and other things as much as you can.

heavy fabric wrinkles less bc it's thick and is harder to crease
after that, how you color it is up to what kind of heavy fabric it is. eg:silk is more reflective than thick linen
right now you have two sets of dark curtains framing lighter areas, creating two focal points that are competing with each other.

There's just something wrong about the perspective on the torso in comparison with the rest of the body. The vagina and the breasts both have a perspective on them of looking up at them, while the torso looks like it remains straight on eye level. nice energy but I feel like there's some weird perspective on all of them. Like top-left, the hip and the shoulders are at an angle that doesn't look right. And the perspective on top-middle is weird too, or maybe the posing overall.

Ah you posted same time I did, missed your post. Uhm, I probably won't continue it to be honest. Usually I stop around this stage for personal work, I guess cause I don't like rendering and I end up doing that all day for work stuff so when I do my own things I just do speedpaints. And yeah, sloppy brushwork is my signature feature :P I guess I should slow down a bit and think through each mark more, it's a bad habit. Somehow I always struggle with it even if I am focusing on it (though I wasn't caring about brushwork this time).

Something about the atmosphere seems off. I'd add more atmosphere to the sphere area of the painting, and maybe make the spiral thin-out a little sooner, but maybe still go just as far... perhaps a little less actually. Also the rhythm with your jagged grass and sharp-ended curves in combination with the sphere shapes, in combination with the cave, all of which seems to be separated from each other thing, bothers me a lot. Like, there's rhythm, but for every different rhythm in the painting, there's a separate area, and they don't seem to really come together to form something truly... cogent?

Anyways, it's sorta cool at a glance. Love the foreground subject/person. Perhaps if you made it all more horizontal it might be easier to fix all of the weird composition problems, image related

I follow the logic, but I'm such a stickler for paintings to not look sloppy. I doubt it would even take that much of a time investment to clean up the messiest areas, and add a bit of refinement to points of interest. In an hour you might have this looking rough but finished instead of that unfinished feeling it currently has. I think that could be helpful for learning how to prioritize rendering and to also have a finished product for posting on a tumblr or something.

Full disclaimer: I've never been a fan of the speedpaint look - stray marks and scribbles with a small basic round that don't describe form or texture always looked like rushed noise.

Hm, I'm not sure I follow your logic. Wouldn't there be bounce light filling in the shadows, even if it is a weaker light source (the moon)? I think that coupled with the white painted walls would make it about the value I have. I'm hesitant to get much darker, I mean, it is a backlit nightscene so is already very dark. But feel free to do a paintover or something, I'd be curious how you would handle it.

>>2181334
Ah, well maybe I will work on it more then. I dunno. I think your point is very valid. It's a tough line to find though, like I personally am a fan of Mullins and loose speedpaints and stuff, so I can't tell when I leave it too sloppy. And I don't really mind posting sloppy stuff on my tumblr haha! I don't really post things for fans or for clients. I just post stuff when I like it. But maybe it is a good idea to spend just a bit longer and clean up the mess somewhat. But yeah again I dunno this stuff is partly too my breaking away from rendering because I spend my weekdays rendering and photobashing for work.

i think you need to get away from representational art for a while. try doing nothing but lines and curves for a few months. abstract shit.

your line quality is just not there. feels really weak. i think some concentrated line confidence and linework practice would do you better in the long run than putting it off and just doing photo studies.

it's really something you should do every few years, but I'd say now is a good time for you to get to it, I sense a plateau coming for you quickly.

Can't really tell what you're going for, a head being covered by flowing hair?
Go read the sticky and determine where you are, and pick up some books from the book thread
You should block out hair in big clumps before stroking in detail, don't go straight into hair strand by strand. It looks sort of like you're using the hair to hide bad face structure, Loomis's "Head and Hands" book can help with that. The neck looks a bit long and the shoulders a bit thin, as well. There are tons of anatomy/gesture books that can help you with stuff like that.

>>2181844
Hmm, maybe make one side of the central hill a bit darker than the rest, giving more volume to the whole shape?
Regarding the mountains, you could make them more varied (currently the whole left part have pretty much the same height). Also, you could add blueish atmospheric perspective, making them look even more distant - http://outrageousestates.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Austrian-Alps-1.jpg.pagespeed.ce_.KQ1lPWfbV5.jpg
For the trees, you could also add atmospheric perspective to the further parts and add some bigger dark patches to the nearer parts (holes between the leaves/tree trunks) - https://alarkinrovigo.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/italian-alps.jpg

I don't think galleries are looking for scenes like that

>>2181844
The warm green of the trees compared to the green of the middle hill push them forward. what you should do is use a colder green. With this you can give your whole composition more volume and size. Having a colder color does not only mean desaturating it or putting more blue in it, it's about how it interacts with the rest. There are desaturated blues that are warmer than some reds

It's hard to solve because your palette is pretty high (as is in most digital art) and any slight change could move your colors everywhere

Yeah that one is mine. Thanks for the comment on the figure (perhaps stiff because I based it loosely on a statue? or maybe that is an excuse :P). I wasn't so sure about the piece as a whole, it seemed weaker than the two nautical pieces I posted which seemed to also get a lot more attention. It's also a bit less thought out as an image/story.

To return the crit: your portraits seem...well, a bit boring. The facial features are not well defined and are generic and the lighting and colours on all of them is dull. I think you should be careful of getting "lazy" with the features. The eyes are just a couple strokes, sort of a shorthand for it. But you aren't showing the structure of the eye well, how the eye is a sphere with lids that wrap the form, and then the nuances within that like how the shape changes by the tear ducts, or how the upper lid interacts with the fat surrounding it and filling the socket, or how the iris bulges skilghts and will change the appearance of the lids depending where the eye looks. A lot of the noses too you just blurred the cast shadow with the nose. While this can be appropriate to use in some instances, when you are practicing like this I think it is a bit of a cop out from painting in the nostrils, wings, and general structure of the nose.

It would be good I think if you spent a few minutes finding some reference photos/paintings of faces in the same positions, then taking lessons form them and applying it. Maybe you will notice some structure to the head that you can use. Or they have a distinctive feature or proportions that you may want to incorporate. Maybe there is an interesting lighting on the face that has some subtle colours you want to use and some interesting shadow shape you would have never invented. How can you push these portraits further?

sorry, I have some trouble understanding you. Pushing the green of the trees to a warmer tone, so there is more distance between them and the trees on the hill? and regarding the cooler colour tone, i've no clear idea how to do that; what I tried was to replace the bright spot of the top further down and thus closer the spectator, I gave the top hill some darker green, which seem to me actually warm but quite cool in the image context?
anyway i appreciate your feedback.

I also added some elements, trying to bring in more depth and placed the mountains slightly higher.

Be more careful with values and edges on your atmospheric perspective. With the value range so dark on that walker and so limited on the guys next to it and the guy directly in front of it, they don't even look like they're in the same picture.

I thought it was one of those collagey things at first. Similarly, those super hard edges in the back but lost-and-found in the front.

I think the time to judge a piece is when it is unfinished, otherwise there won't be time to make changes to it.

And the character may mean a lot to you and have a backstory--but none of this is shown in your image. Can you somehow give a sense of who this character is and what their story is through your painting?

Well you can have things go behind other figures, like you don't have to draw it overlapping, you can instead have on in front of the other. Ramon Hurtado often does this in his drawings.

But if you look at your image, like, there are a few awkward points where they meet. Look at how the top three figures sort of meet all at that one point in a weird way--the head of one is up the ass of the other, the arm of the top right one is coming down into that same intersection and has been redrawn a few times os it is extra busy, and that same figure's head is tangent with the back of the top left one.

I would just try to have them overlap in more intentional looking ways rather than awkward conjoining. Or avoid overlapping altogether. I knew a guy once who would actually draw poses on different pages, and then switch between those pages when a pose would work compositionally well on a particular one. Maybe they created a cool graphic shape with another pose, or maybe they even interacted on the page somehow and he could tell a bit of a story.

I'm pretty ambivalent towards the painting, i found the name funny considering.

Oh. Well the meme is merc_wip, which is a different naming convention than I use since that wasn't the filename I uploaded it with. I would have named it MercWIP if I did.

Pay more attention to where the core of the shadow is before you start shading everywhere. Also, get the 3d shapes placed right in relation to themselves or else no amount of shading will make it look less flat.

Working on this. Does her right arm look broken? If so can I get a redline? I'm not sure what to do with that arm.

he said it is 'today's study' how is he wasting skill by practicing? how is he 'repainting' something if it is a photo study? you seem to be under the assumption that painting/drawing from reference equates to lack of skill

I would learn the insertion of muscles, so instead of just having a contour of the leg you can define how the calf muscles connect to the inner portion of the bottom of the femur and overlaps the bicep femoris/semitendinosus which connects to the top of the tibia and fibia

Any advice on the woman's body? I know the face is trash right now. I'm trying to make her riding/swiming along with the shark and I want her to look fluid and kind of effortless.

Also its on tracing paper so not the greatest photo
