"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2159532

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

no, it was fairly dead before that already.
1. she has that thousand yard stare. try to cross her eyes a little to give of the feeling that she is actually looking at something and not just looking into the far distance.

2. the iris is also very big, not leaving much room for the whites. if you're going to keep it that way, you should look for ways to decorate the iris more. try more highlights, different shapes etc. irises, don't have to be perfectly round (or round at all), the eyes don't have to have a certain shape, these are all rules that exist to be broken.
(a small tip: where the highlight is is usually also where it is dark.
that's why a completely black eye seems more alive than others. but you can use it with colored eyes as well. just surround the highlight with darks to make it pop.)

3.your lines are not clean. try to be much, MUCH more deliberate with your shapes. clarity is important.
4. kind of related to shapes: vary between thick and thin lines, this is also important. you'd be surprised to see how much of a difference it makes. the difference between the lines can make a much more clear and strong impression.
(i didn't use any thin lines here out of laziness, but you can see certain places where i reinforced lines. again, be deliberate about it. this is actually generally true when it comes to inking)

also
-i suggest leaving a little more distance towards the eyebrows, if not much more.
-look up other artists and how they do things. other artists are constantly building on top of each other as well. this is why styles are getting more and more complicated/sophisticated. the eyes are a good example. just compare to 80 anime eyes.

I do completely agree with the line weights though but I needed to do this quickly and the thicker the lines the faster it is too draw for me and to try to hide stuff. I did do some stuff in the iris but I might exaggerate it if I have time if I can get an extension. I also appreciate your use of Miuna.

look at the shape of the eyes you drew (i don't mean the iris this time). they are almost a complete oval shape, and the iris has the same shape. this makes it very bland. i get that some manga artists have this style, but they usually use hatching or other line techniques to spice it up.

if you are going to color it with that kind of shape, you NEED to do something to spice it up and take away the blandness. preferrably with values.

otherwise, have another miuna. look at her eyes, they have character.

I'll try to fix it up if I get time bit I was suppose to have completed 5 of these. I get what you're saying about the eyes not having any character, but I was supposed to have different looking attributes for each girl and so I was having the donut as a super genki type so I though over the top big round eyed would work. The eyes are the only part that is a paint over anyway so I should be able to change them easily enough.

yes. i should have mentioned this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iris_%28anatomy%29
the iris has a shape like a plate. it is concave, and the pupil is merely a hole to let the light through, so it is usually the darkest.
the shadows are thrown onto this concave plate, while the highlights are reflecting on the convex outer side of the eye, this means that the highlight is usually where the shadow is.
if we simplify this it means the same as what i said in >>2174771 about surrounding the highlights with darks.
(this is a pretty rough explanation, someone else might be able to explain it better.)

>>2174791
i'm just giving out advice for eyes in general. you don't have to follow it, just use what you deem useful.

>so I though over the top big round eyed would work
you need to seperate the ideas from the visuals. calling it "round" doesn't literally mean it has to be super round. otherwise you are just limiting yourself.
look at other artists for comparison, often you'll find that what you thought as "big round" actually had a very distinct shape all along..

If I had to nitpick anything besides design inaccuracies (I assume artistic liberty?) the teardrop pendant looks like it's misshapen, and her right (our left) tit could be a bit more pronounced, it seems like it just ends at her shirt. even in stylization, not everything is allowed.
the ears can easily be above the eyes, but that depends on the angle.
same with the clavicle, from the front it should not look like that.

this will become a problem once you start doing different angles.
which is also why i suggested doing the other angles as well, to get a more thorough understanding for these proportions.

of course you have a point, there is some wriggle room. but i'm just giving my 2 cents.

Your proportions are so skewed it hurts me. The far eye is so tiny in comparison the the closer eye. The head in general is just far too big. Her left shoulder way too big. Her arms are way too tiny. Her breasts are too far up. Her neck doesn't look like it attaches to the rest of her body.
And then your color choices are just hideous. The teal thing you've got going for the body could actually be ok, but the weird puke green you've used for the intestines doesn't look good with it at all.
Also, why is your canvas so big? Why so much negative space on either side of the figure?

You can draw decently but have no idea how light or colour work. I think you can also think about the design more, they are pretty basic and uninteresting, especially on the right spider guy. Middle one is very generic, left one is kinda generic but I actually like it since it has a few interesting things going on.

I like the way the wrist wraps extend over the fingers, it makes it a little more interesting than just having straps on the wrist. The club too is very basic, but the way the handle is carved out is a nice detail, it adds interest without getting a complex design that wouldn't fit the character.

For the new designs you just posted: left is boring and generic and shows off boobs for no reason, middle has potential but also is a little boring/generic and the metal doesn't look metal, right one feels like you are keeping the design too "safe". Like the hammer is just a hammer, the goggles look like swim goggles, the pouches are as basic as you can get, the shoes are basic etc. Think a bit more about how you can improve each of those things. What would make the pouches more interesting? Maybe the way they attach to the belt is interesting, or the way they clasp shut. The proportions of the character are also unappealing.

>horn looks too smooth, how to make it more textured? Different brush?
>Should I smash the layers together? I have layers for: hair, horn, skin, scythe, bracelet things, and linework. Feel like its gonna get hard to render where the objects meet if they are on different layers

>How to render metal
They've got hard darks and soft lights, normally. the reflections on metal are very apparent and the values are normally going to be very sudden in shifts. do some study time on chrome or some polished metals and it'll make sense with a little practice. everything past that is adding the texture or dimming the reflections a bit based on whatever metal you're aiming for.

>Hair
try being a little bit more solid with the hair. Also try to add some subtle gradients into it where it overlaps with the rest of the skin. the main problem is that it's just plastered on, not reflecting any ambient light. White hair like that is gonna pick up a lot of color from surroundings. You've got purple shading on the girl, but grey shading on the hair, which adds to it looking out of place on the image.

Also, I wouldn't paint it over her shoulder in the position that it is because it just makes it look like she's got it set up lopsided on her head. But maybe that's the intent, so take that with a grain of salt.

>Horn
A chalk brush or harder brush in general should help with that.

>Smash the layers
I only use one layer in the first place, so that's entirely up to your workflow. Some people use tons, some don't. It makes it easier to mix colors imo on one layer, but some programs allow you to pick up background colors, so that's entirely your preference.

>darken the nipples
If you want, you could probably just have a gradient towards them.

Depends what you want. Something a little more realistic but still stylised? Try Berserk by Kentaro Miura.

Something a little more typical, but still detailed and well drawn? Full Metal Alchemist (the manga) by Hiromu Arakawa (which I've no doubt you've already heard of).

There's plenty others, but those are the ones that come to mind for me and the ones I mainly use for inspiration when it comes to style.

You line quality and fabrics look fantastic, but your characters look sort of stiff and dead.
Play with angles, balance, weight, curves, and expressions in your characters. Gesture drawing is a good way to practice this, or just quick sketches where you focus less on the anatomy and more on expression and movement. A dynamic character in your style would look great.
The poses don't have to be like in pic, you can make a dynamic standing pose by putting the weight on one foot, or giving the back an interesting arch, etc. etc.

Short hair is hard to actually have wavy when it's thick like that.

But flowing hair really depends on the wind or character itself. (A character; say with no wind blowing with moving hair would have a more ominous look)

I drew an "Example". Not too accurate but enough to get a picture.

But it then depends on style.

Over all if you want nice flowing hair study human hair in the wind. or in a natural setting.
After that simple it to your liking.

You changed the story of the pose to sexy and flirty, which wasn't the impression I got at all from the original, where it looks just like an innocent, smug child.

Tilted hips is needed for contrapposto. Tilted shoulders, not so much. That can be much more subtle and should be if you're going for a casual idle pose.

From a traditional PoV, colouring/shading can be approached much the same way, wherein you start with your darkest areas & 'pull' them to create contrast, but this depends on your medium.
For digital, I imagine the quickest way would be to colour in blocks and add depth & lighting afterwards by manipulating the contrast of the original palette.

okay so i'm not sure if redlines are a thing, but it would be really awesome if anyone could do one to point out any errors with the anatomy/posing. personally i think the proportions in this are okay, but i need some help with the angle of the head and facial features, as well as the legs. the hand obviously needs to be fixed as well and i'd like input on that because it's been difficult to get it to look right(and this is the best i could do)

i only ever draw faces from a front, 3/4, or profile view, but never from above or below. that's why i'm not sure what to do to align the facial features with the head angle. i haven't been able to find a tutorial on this, mostly because it's hard for me to word exactly what i'm looking for. i hope this makes sense.
the thigh muscles are also going to throw me off in the final piece, i just know it. any tips for drawing thighs would be cool, particularly the muscles and from different angles.

also, messy lines are messy because it isn't the final lineart. i just colored the eyes to try and get an idea of how to position his irises. the main trouble i have with my anatomy stems from my lines being really stylized, making some features look off no matter what i do. kind of nervous about posting here cause /ic/ can be vicious, but i really want tips.

Not him, but the key to separation is in the value and saturation.

Whatever color palette you do choose, whether it be warm or cool, you can still get variation while keeping "harmony" by varying tints and shades.

EX:

>Pinks and yellows of skin tones
>dark sepia coloration of buildings

Both of these are radically different, but still "harmonize" because they are derived from an "orange, red-orange, red" analogous color scheme.

as the other annon said about light set up, now to nail it you need to clarify your main light with directional lines which you have to cut these to the forms and 3d shapes of your drawing to locate where shadows start (the girl needs minor fix as that annon pointed on his small value thumbnail), but background needs a lot, a lot of buildings have his light inverted, take care of it and you'll make wonders of improvement

Thanks heaps, will definitely try and work a better color palette and define the light source and shadows better.

Would like to know if you think this design is appealing, it's pretty inspired by psychonauts

I think if the ears were just a touch smaller, it would all fit a lot better. She's cute in the creepy way you were going, definitely.

earsize doesnt matter, it's wrong because of position
>>2180784

solution: even doing that style, use a fucking reference so you dont mess it
you want it to look appealing? then construct the form, if it's flat it wont be cute, there are only straight lines on the face

to copy paste faces for expresions is a must no, don't be vague

Okay, just for clarity, what you are saying is that the basic forms are lacking and therefore it looks flat? If so then I'll redraw her being more careful about the construction.

Also, no more copy pasting for expressions, I don't usually do it anyway, pic related.

Well... Yeah pretty much but I'm more concerned that it will get in the way of practice and study, also thanks for the video I actually learned something more today.
