Sometimes I dream about becoming a childrens book illustrator and just drawing the goofiest things like that and developing a style people hire me for that revolves completely around sillyness. Then you are a shitty artists and should do more studies yourself. The proportions are everything and from where I sit they are all jacked up. The artists needs to work on his eye and not whatever else it was that distracted him because that elongated leg was a careless oversight that threw the proportions of the rest of the figure off.

Sure you think it's minor and that's your right, but trying to defend what is a helpful critique because you like it does nothing but hurt that poster. Your input is irrelevant.

Don't scribble and slow down. Think about every mark you make. You're just slapping down any old line or stroke when it is somewhat close to what you want, then you put it down another 5 times and get a mess. Slow down and get it right the first time. If it is wrong either ctrl z it or paint over it and clean it up.

My guess is we have two separate light sources that are close to each other, but not perfectly parallel. If that is the case, the shadow from her arm is two separate shadows: one region is an area where her arm blocks light from light source A, one is an area where her arm blocks light from light source B, and the area in the middle is where the arm blocks light from both light source A and B (hence it's darker).

I'm not 100% this is the exact reason because you can't see a similar effect on the cast shadow from the chair leg onto the floor. The effect in question is most visible near her wrist and ankles, where near the wrist the two shadows practically overlap, then as you travel further away they diverge more.

The sketchbook comes with a little ribbon that tightens the pages a little bit, but still you're right it would eventually smudge

I don't know much about conserving artwork and how I would go about preserving something like this. I'm guessing putting white paper in between the two images when closing but I suppose that would still get smudged.

Although they are studies so I'm not too fussed about it, but it is still something I would need to figure out

For this one (and I think also the elephant from earlier) I only used the brush shown in pic related. It's from Jaime Jones's brush set.

Most if not all of the blending is done by using the eyedropper and painting lightly.

I usually get into phases where I'll stick with pretty much one universal brush that has some sort of texture, but I'll occasionally use many different brushes in a single piece if I really need the texture change.

Here's a 100% zoom of my messy brushwork. Next to it you can see how brush size affects the look of the brush. Again, I just happened to like that particular brush on that day - any textured brush with good coverage from Jaime, Ruan, or any of the other pro brush sets floating around will give you similar results. You can accomplish 90% of the same look with even a basic round brush if you adjust the settings to your liking.

Weird, I get different results with those brushes. Open up the brushes panel when you select a brush (using your tablet, not your mouse). Do you see things like Shape Dynamics, Transfer, Color Dynamics, etc activate or deactivate depending on which brush you select? From the brush selection window, do you have it set so that it shows you the stamp shape of the brush and a preview of the stroke like in here >>2174137 ? Do your brush strokes look like the preview?

Hard to say what's going wrong, but it looks like something in your settings is preventing each custom brush from taking on it's intended properties. For the first brush (the red one), in Shape Dynamics, under Angle Jitter, the drop down should get bound to Direction, but it looks like it isn't happening.

I'm guessing those locks on the right side of the Brush properties panel (shown in pic related) might be enabled on your end, and that might be blocking your brush from adjusting those settings as the brush creator intended. If that doesn't fix it, you may have to delete all of your preferences in photoshop (make back ups or take note of everything you'd need first).

Use a harder edged brush, and up your brush's opacity and flow. Whenever you need a hard edge, do it in as few strokes as possible. Many low opacity wobbly strokes on top of each other will give you a soft, hesitant edge; firm confident strokes will give you a hard edge if the brush settings are conducive to that.

I don't know what brush or settings you're using, but in places you're getting unnecessary artifacts (the edges of the mountains and the sand for example). Those look like too large of a brush spacing, so I'd try lowering that.

You might be a bit too concerned with capturing the texture ATM. The uniformity of the bumps in the skin between near and far parts of the elephant has a flattening effect.

If you want to retry this study (or for your next study), try using a non-textured brush for the whole thing. Maybe something that's a circle or oval as the tip shape, spacing around 10% or lower, size dynamics off, Transfer On with Opacity or Flow set to Pen Pressure. In the toolbar up top make sure opacity and flow are both at 100%. Don't lower either for any reason, and try to use as big a brush as possible throughout the whole thing. Whatever size you thing is the largest you can use for painting a specific shape, go another size larger. Get everything in place except the texture.

Focus on big shapes and big forms. Pay attention to the edges between shapes (ex: cast shadows might have a harder edge than form shadows). Once all of your big shapes are correct, with the right value, color and edges, refine down to smaller shapes while trying to maintain the relationships of the big shapes from earlier. Try to think about both form and shape as you go. Try to identify your light sources and which major planes of the elephant are lit by which source(s). The main lights in this example are the sun, the blue dome of the sky, and the upward warm bouncelight from the ground.

Oh, and another thing about blurriness:

You should be painting on a canvas much larger than what you end up posting online. When you're ready to post something, save a copy of the image. Flatten it, downsize it, duplicate the only layer that's there and put a sharpen filter over it. Lower the opacity of that sharpened layer to maybe 30% or so - whatever looks good. Better yet, at a layer mask to that sharpened layer, and brush using black or white to selectively sharpen what needs to be sharpened. The same trick can be done with a gaussian blur layer instead of a sharpen layer, and use a mask to selectively soften areas.

Those tips are really only for post processing before posting. Ideally your original file at 100, 50 or 25% zoom should already have the sharpness you want.

Try it again without tracing or having the ref and drawing stacked on the same document. You have to learn how to analyze and reproduce proportions manually if you want to improve your observational drawing skills.

Focus on painting the big forms that are present, and depicting the big plane changes accurately. Your cheeks for example look like they have a hard, pinched seam whereas on the model it's a rounded form just like on everybody else's face. Don't try to paint in extraneous detail like individual eyelashes - focus on overall form.

You also need to observe more accurately, especially for forms you aren't familiar with. For example, your value usage around the nose is way off model, and you've given the lips a creepy duck smile.

I'd stick to refs with a clear, single directional light source instead of soft frontal lighting. Better yet, go grab an apple and a lamp, light it up and paint that. That will teach you how to draw 3D forms accurately and how to paint light accurately. In fact, start off with an egg or a mug so you aren't distracted by the surface patterns on the apple's skin.

I look forward to see more from you, I studied a bunch of shit today too.

Does anyone have any tips on painting eyes and lips? I always feel like that they don't really look nice or don't go with the rest of the painting. Or is it just a case of doing more studies?

>Lips
Watch your edges, specifically the contour of the lips. Because of the local color change between skin and lips, it's common to associate that transition with a line or a hard edge among artists. However, upon close inspection the transition is a fairly soft one, so try to reflect that in your painting.

>Eyes
Edges and detail. Soften edges around eyelashes, and you can even try softening most of the edges present. Gurney has a great blog post about this called "softness in eyes" - look it up. As for detail, you gain a lot by cutting back on the amount of detail you include - especially things like texture in the iris. Paint like a painter - not like a camera. Doing master studies and painting portraits from life (mirror or friends and relatives) will teach you a lot more than relying solely on photos. Photographs will capture a lot of crisp edges and excessive detail that a painter will typically choose to omit as it is extraneous.

Your brush strokes are faint and hesitant. Use a harder edged brush with more opacity, and be deliberate with your strokes. Focus on getting major forms to read, then define smaller forms. Clean up your marks where necessary.

Thank you very much anon, this is exactly what I was looking for. I'll definitely take a look at that Gurney blog post - I downloaded his book about colour and light a little while ago and whilst I haven't read through it all yet it seems very informative so far. Thanks again.

Just make your own, it's easy.
First make a black shape on white background, select it then go to "edit" menu and select "define brush preset".
There, you made your own custom brush tip.
Now play around with it in the brush menu and save when happy.

Same way you study anything else. Focus on capturing the large forms and shapes - subdue or ignore extraneous detail.

You may find it helpful do to same landscape studies outdoors, from real life. Even trees in a backyard or a park will suffice.
