Wondering what else could spruce this composition up, of it just needs a complete re-do (more likely). The context is an abstracted war-torn land where the warlords cruelly remind those still alive who's the boss. They coat the remains of the dead in metal, and the soldiers have to feel the skulls of those who died every step of the way. The vast, collective metal surface also attracts a lot of lightning.

Nice job. Try simplifying your lines though. Lines like that of his traps (from neck into shoulder) is this weird noodle-y kind of line with all these lumps. The same goes for his lats. Just get it down with a simple curved or straight line. And show more overlapping form. You're doing it on the arm to the left, while his arm to the right (closest to us) looks off because there is nothing telling us that the muscles of the upper arm are infront of his deltoid.

>>2167393
Sweet colors and rendering. Maybe more defined planes would make it better, and (maybe you haven't got to it yet) but make the rimlight thicker and have it vary in thickness as the cheeks are plumper than the bridge of the nose etc.

Two things:
A. It's good, and I like the colors, but it looks a bit like it could be refined a bit more with the shading. Make it a bit smoother to ad a bit more depth. But It looks good.

B. It looks like something a fat feminist tumblcunt would draw for fat acceptance and feminist power, and other gay SJW bullshit, which makes me really hate it. That's not my critique. That's my opinion.

Shadows feel too heavy on both. You also went a little overboard on the bloom I think.

Are you thinking of level design too? Would these be easy to navigate? Does the placement of things make sense to walk around and through? Why are the waterfalls positioned like that and the water with the land--does this make sense to you? Ask yourself these questions and others as you work on it.

You're also choosing a weird angle. Why not just use isometric perspective?

And thanks for the laugh. I'm not any of those things, though I tried getting across the ideals of Pussy Riot. And I was hoping she'd read more "phat" than "fat" (hence the narrow waist). And the large hands are just for visual interest and connotate to more strength.

Artist of these concepts here. They're actually already exsisting levels from my client, he just wanted to see them put into an environment in the style I'm doing. These are merely for mood and impression of how the game would/could feel and look.
Also, we're not going for that slight perspective shift but more ortographic projection. This is really early developement so it's nothing to strict. Just playing around with the design and environment of the levels.

On the darkness of the shadows and bloom, it is my laptop screen messing with me. I can't seem to adjust it properly and it always fucks up my saturation and values. Getting a better monitor soon, though.

Too bogged up in surface look and separating light from shadow. Dont look at reilly stuff, or Jaime's drawings. Start with some basic form building. I was doing a bit of the same stuff like you, but it wont internalize form knowledge, its more akin to copying. Theres nothing wrong with pushing stuff graphicly - but you always do it with form in mind, even if that sounds weird.

Id lay down the shading for now, focus a lot less on making cool marks and transitions, and just how the masses and forms are put together.

Right I'm not saying do a 1 for 1 study, because that's obviously not your goal. But if you are looking at him for inspiration you might as well take some things from him and apply them in your image to both learn and strengthen your own painting. Right now maybe the colours sorta are sargent-y but not really and honestly a lot of portraiture from that time period would have similar palettes. Nothing else really shows me that you are learning or taking inspiration from him.

What is your goal with this painting? It honestly just looks like a 10 minute quick sketch. Do you plan on taking it further? What do you want from it? What are you trying to show?

all i did was scan the sketch and lay down some colours
i rendered the face a bit and liked how it was coming along
i don't intend to get rid of the sketch bc i like the feeling of the process being part of the painting - at least for this one it feels appropriate
the cheek/nose are is probably indicative of the level i'd like to get the rest of the painting to
i intend to toy more with the edges as you've recommended
the shirt in particular begs for more edge control - it's admittedly all to crisp imo atm
i'll probably keep the silhouette crisp - particularly in the face area since that's obv the focal point

I find that the image in my head of what I want a picture to be hinders on my color palette selection abilities.

"naturalism" has always been my sort of thing so I just matched the colors to what I saw in references- maybe oranged or blued it up or less saturation for the environment

but now that I'm trying to get into simpler art, I'm struggling with my lack of experience in choosing simpler color palettes

I've heard things like "triangle" or "arrow" selection color palettes but I'm not quite sure how to apply them, especially in pictures where the image in my head is more "naturalistic"

try and avoid just using the darker shade of your base color, thats what ends up making work look muddy
also try using a bigger brush like that anon said, and block out your colors first. only go in with the low opacity when blending. aanatomy wise, it isnt bad. the base of the skull should be bigger and maybe work on the mouth a little more. I think it could be quite cool if you spent a bit longer on it, especially the hair

just avoid the smudge tool and dont be afraid to go at it with a thick, high opacity brush. something that helped me build up confidence with coloring is making the base color something really dark, like a dark brown, then building up the highlights and different tones. sinix explains it better here: https://youtu.be/cYRJYIWrOWs?t=165

I would really work on faces/heads in general. There's something about it that seems too cartoony, the head might be a tad too big and he seems a bit too short. Did you draw the figure first before adding in the detailing? The base of a drawing is the most important thing

There's also some parts of the linework that looks a little too chicken scratch-y. If you're purposefully trying to make it look a bit sketchy, if this wasn't your plan in the first place, I would keep going in with some blocks of darker values while also keeping some lines clean and maybe even slightly thick. Try working on line confidence and going in with bigger strokes rather than a few shaky ones. Pic related is what I have in mind kind of

If I do the pencil and I draw the figure and do all that, my pictures come out okay, but I am just coming off a long period of not drawing anything (3 to 4 months) and I am just getting back into the swing of things you know? Trying not to give myself the opportunity to hate my own work and just erase it every 5 second and get pissed and go back to video games.

That being said, line confidence is a huge issue with me that I am trying to work on, and why I am particularly proud of the legs which have a lot of smoother lines. I'm not a huge fan of the head either. Plus his mouth is too big.

Yeah iktf about getting back into the groove of art things, honestly just doodle some really simple shit like cubes, flowers, circles, stars, whatever. Fuck around with the lines and crosshatching and see how fast you can make them while keeping them as smooth as possible. Even scribble around some lines. I do it a lot when I'm on the phone or at work and it's really helped me build up that confidence. Another thing is something you've probably heard before, using your whole arm when drawing rather than just your wrist.

Only using pen is a really good idea too. Keep on keeping on

>>2168390
pencil rendering would be a great idea, one thing you should practice with is getting those sharper edges in as you blend other things together, like pic related. Not a regular poster but figured I would share something I have been trying.
When I start painting for the day I do a painting in someone elses style.
It's a study but it loosens me up and then when I feel ballsy I introduce the pallet and some solutions from another persons painting.
Also, When you are trying to paint like someone else it takes a whole bunch of that starting pressure off which is great for getting going.

Stopped this one here because I'm trying to improve my shape language, brush strokes and how I form things with my values so time to start another.

Is there something I'm not getting about this show/art style? Because to me it seems like something people like for the same reason "Young adult" books became popular (and replaced a lot of mandatory reading lists around the country for high school students. That's right, no more reading the great gatsby, or animal farm (too controversial), and now it's been replaced with maze runner, twilight, and the hunger games. I shit you not.)

It looks good because it's super simple, there's not a whole lot too it, nothing to read into, it's not too difficult to make and get good at (Hence why everybody loved MLP because even autistic kids were artists at that point), and people like to hold onto as much of it as they can because it makes them feel cultured when really it's just kid shit to entertain snotty little kids.

This isn't me saying I hate your art, I mean it does look good, I'm not even going to lie. This is more a rant about how much I hate modern views on literature as a whole, but I give the art world a bit more credit, however I assume I'm missing the whole 'Pizaz'

I'm going to echo what other anons have been saying for a while now: Push your values. I tried a quick mock-up of that - emphasizing the girl's head. Note that I didn't take lighting into account at all, but only tried to make distinct value shapes. Compare mine with the original zoomed out, and there should be a clear difference in both punch and readability.

My advice is to take this back to the thumbnail stages. Chances are you can preserve your drawing for the most part, but you need to figure out your values and in turn your lighting. For these thumbnails, keep them about an inch or two tall on your computer screen or in your sketchbook, and stick to as few values as possible (2-5). Make them solid, sharp edged shapes with no gradients. Try out about a dozen of these, then iterate on the best ones until you have a clear plan for your big value shapes. Note that my mock-up isn't even that good because I didn't go through the whole thumbnail process to arrive at the best possible design solution - that's for you to figure out. After you have the best value thumb you can clarify the lighting, and even repeat the same process to figure out the best colors to go with your best value thumb.

You seem to be afraid to make drastic changes. Save this current version as a separate file and set it aside. Do all of your thumbnails, and once you have a plan, see what can be salvaged from your original. Don't be afraid to butcher it - nothing that's already on the canvas has intrinsic value just because you invested time painting it. If you're too hesitant to make drastic changes - especially if you didn't have a solid plan going in for every element of the painting - then chances are you'll end up with a lackluster product out of fear or laziness.

Forgot to mention:
When designing your values, you want to lead the viewer's eye to what you decide is the most important element of the piece. My edit aimed at establishing the girl's head as the primary focal point, but you might instead want to emphasize the dragon's head, or maybe something else entirely. Maybe you want multiple focal points, but even then you need a clear hierarchy.

Contrast in value, color, edges, detail, etc will guide the eye to the focal point. Let the mood you want to convey dictate your values and colors.

Also as an aside, the values on your version that you posted and your version that I posted shifted because I changed the Mode from grayscale to RGB. I noticed that your image looked different in Chrome than it did in photoshop.

So I'm doing this mongol-inspired lancer dude. Goddamn, I spent a long time wondering why it looked like shit, and it just turns out I was just lazy with the values. >>2169773
Your studies are halfhearted and sloppy, and the drawing part of your paintings tend to be rushed. That's what it looks like to me, at least. You can render just fine, and the values in the "dawn" painting tend to be pretty good. Just be a little more careful with your approach and also: stop noodling away at shit too much. Just repaint it instead -- with reference if you feel like giving up.

Glad you are trying to keep my earlier comment in mind, though I think this one still falls very short of the mark design-wise. Painting-wise I like this one more, I think your painting skills are excellent. But the design is disappointing.

Try thinking of function more. What would his lance be for? Battle? Jousting tourney stuff? Would it be on horseback? Because then he'd need a longer lance, different armor etc. Would he maybe need a shield? How is he protected? Will he have layers of thick cloth? Chainmail? Plate mail? Lamellar? Would there be patterns of designs on the cloth for show or identification? How will things be layered? How do they attach (straps, ties, buttons, buckles, sewn etc)?

Tied in with all this is the actual character part. Think of him as a human being, with emotions, preferences, a life, a history, a family. how would these things be reflected in his design? Would his armor be worn out? Would it be new? Would he get hot and roll up a sleeve? How does he carry himself? With confidence and strength? Or is he more timid and shy? Is he reliant on his speed and agility or his strength and power? How would this be reflected in his pose and design? How can you show his personality through design? You want to make him an individual, make him interesting. Not just a generic "soldier number 468 mixing with mongol influence and a lance".

Please explain how the gesture is fucked. I'm not happy with the face myself but that's not my main issue right now.
Tits on the shoulder is her costume, I don't care if you don't like. Boob highlight, I've already got rid of.
I dunno what bit you're talking about about the vagina bit, bit If you're just gonna critisize, please atleast make it constructive. If you think it's so bad a redline would be appreciated.
Dunno why everyone here has to be so negative and insulting damn.
>>2170301
Alright, so the line down the middle, I'll get rid off, but I'm using a ref for the stomach anatomy. And no, no colour picking, just alot of blending with alt-click colouring.

it's not just the black line, the paint itself is too deep on that zone, it's as dark as hips shadow when close to the skirt, that's all wrong, soft all edges inside belly, invert your canvas to really see what you did there

If you want to stylice face, use reference as you need

So today is the day I decided I will stop asking myself "how do they do that" and try to paint something myself.
Used reference but drew the face from imagination (probably the reason why its the shittiest part of the painting)

I think what they meant about her tits is that they're reeeeaally high up, seriously use some reference

>> No.2170413

boobs are so ball-alike, that rock on the ground is rendered with a total different light source, face is so flat, noise, eyes and mouth are like pasted things, think of features as parts, they flow, smoothly, think as a single unit.
right arm drappery might be too repetitive
neck goes from tin to big , that's wierd, keep it thin

legs and hands are going awsome

Hey, thanks for the detailed critique.I kind of wanted to just make a faceless mook, though. Implying history is fine if you're designing a specific character, I'm more or less just painting a cavalryman. I guess I'm a pretty boring person.

I worked a bit more on it, trying to add a bit of personality or something, but I've spent most of that time redoing that hand. You know which one I mean. Still an overworked mess. Bah, whatever, I'll move on to something else soon.

>>2170836
I have no idea what I'm looking at here, so it's pretty hard to tell. Vagina-hairdryer legs? On a person? Idk, man, some clarity with variations in local value and stuff might make it clearer, until then I just don't know.
