Are you shading with black and white? A cheat sheet to shading is to highlight warm and shade cool. It's basically what the dodge and burn tools do for you that noobs overuse. It's what happens in sunlight, but other scenes will have different lighting obviously.

I think I am capable of doing that in black and white, or maybe I just forgot. Need to re-learn things or try to approach this through a different way.

No, in your color drawings. Stop adding black and white to your colors to render. Look at real photos and use a color picker and see how much the color changes and how it gets warmer in the sun and cooler in the shade.
And stop pillow shading.

I stopped following their art long before Tumblr became a thing. Back when they only did Pokemon. But I ran into the tutorial a while back while trying to find a good example and I have to admit it's fairly straight to the point compared to the book and is better for visual learners with ADD. I don't like the artist but if the tutorial helps, it helps. Plus the tutorial in itself is from the pokemon days and is untainted with any tumblrina bs.

Don't worry buddy, this is not even an argument. Everybody knows PurpleKeckleon is fucking coo-coo crazy and rude as hell. From an artist's perspective, admittedly she used to be decent at form rendering, but now she does nothing but crybaby comics about her gender and "muh rights." Ignore at all costs.

Here's something from earlier in the same year as the tutorial. It's clearly more pleasing in the color choices than your current skills.
I agree she's insane and it's best to ignore her unless you like drama. But you shouldn't dismiss the knowledge just because she later went crazy imo. If it helps, it helps. But whatever, I don't really care about drama too much so you can choose to do what you want.
