Can we have an /ic/ humor threads? Whether it's from bad cringe worthy art, stories, or laughably bad tutorials and advice like pic related here. Just the most ridiculous stuff.

At first I thought this was nothing more than a joke. Now that I've read the /ic/ recommended books for "beginners" it's just a slightly exaggerated genuine tutorial.

I found these cool art pencils a while back

>> No.2151143

>>2151104
It's because there isn't much a fucking book can tell you. The fundamental, mechanical skills necessary to draw can be summed up on a page. Technical ability is achieved only by an immense amount of focused practice. Everyone has this retarded idea that knowledge is the greater half of drawing. "If I read enough shit, I'll be a great artist!" Tutorials are the most significant hindrance in today's art culture. Art instruction has taken precedence over simple practice. The real instruction comes after practice. Tutorials need to be saved for people that already have the technical foundation to fucking apply them. Tuts aren't for newbs. And 99% of the art instruction media out there for self-teachers are just bloated fucking tutorials. Novice artists have this perception that tutorials are miraculous little shortcuts that allow you to skip the hard work. If you can't fill a page with consistant ellipses and planes, sphere and cubes and cylinders, don't fucking bother reading a tutorial on how to draw a face. You're wasting your time. Cuboid so, spheres and cylinders are the simplest fucking shapes. If you can't draw those, why the fuck do you think you can draw a human-goddamned-being.

Huh. I never thought about this. When I was in elementary/middle/high school, I just doodled shapes all over my notebooks. Never characters or anything, but just different volumes. I found it really easy to just start following tutorials, and I've watched my friends struggle to do the same. That explains a lot for me actually.

Vilppu and Peter Han and whoever he studied under (and I guess the Drawabox guy) are like the only niggas I know of that start out talking about the mechanical process of drawing. It's really annoying because without knowing that it's very hard for new people to follow along. I think most instructors like Loomis et al have been doing it so long they forget what it's like being a beginner which is why you get him in FWAP saying "just draw a circle fagget lol". I don't even think Proko talks about the mechanical skills at all. "Just draw a perfect circle and you can draw the human head guise lmao".

I'm back hello. While I'm here, I'll first address the guy saying that the technical ability "comes naturally" and thus knowledge is the most important half. You're retarded. For real. The key to improving is focused, directed and concerted practice. Believe it or not you have to be fucking mindful and shit while learning. You can't just "draw" and get better. If you just draw a face 100 godsamned times without making each mark on that paper significant, and being conscious of every fucking decision you make while drawing it, you're not going to improve. You gotta help yourself out, and make the most of out every fucking second you practice. Mindfulness is so lacking when I see people practicing. Thoughtless repetition isn't goof practice. And I'm so fucking frustrated that I even have to say this shit. You need to be mindful while developing your technical abilities. It will not come naturally, unless you've got low standards in regards to what "it" is.

For beginners, I'd recommend warming up every session doing ellipse and wide curves. They can be random at first. Skate the page. But then move on to actual practice. Lay down straight lines of random lengths and angles on your page. Those lines are going to be the major axes of your ellipses. Fill up a page or two like this. Shouldn't take more than 5 or 10 minutes. Next you can just spend a page drawing straight lines (to avoid future bias, don't avoid drawing angles that are difficult. Do them until they're easy). Also fill a page with c and s curves.

So with that, you've got a 15-20 warm up. Then move on to form, form intersections and perspective rules. I won't go over this, because there are a million resources out there that cover it. After how ever much practice you can manage (we're all busy, I get it) move on to a subject of your choice.

So that's the basic session format I'd recommend for a beginner. Start with a warm up, move on to form and perspective studies, then end with whatever.

>> No.2160644

>>2160640
I ran outta characters. so many typos. Anyway, what people need to practice has been said a billion fucking times. I hate hearing people say "everyone says practice, but what do I practice?" Are you living under a rock? Practice drawing what you see. Practice drawing smooth, fluid lines. Practice rendering the basic 3D forms in perspective. None of that shit is a secret to anybody.

I read Drawing on the right side of the brain and still couldn't draw shit. Then I smoked a joint with a friend and my drawings improved drastically, I finished Betty Edwards then I read Keys to drawing which is a really fucking good book and realized I was already applying stuff that was on it without realizing it (plump and level, proportions, sighting) and learned some others.

It's amazing, I just started drawing formally this month and I've been doing great, it feels like I skipped the whole help me my drawings look like complete shit phase. But of course there's always room for improvement, I plan to read more Loomis (read Fun with a pencil last week) and start Vilpu or Hampton, then move on to anatomy..

Beginners don't even know how to start practicing spheres cubes and cylinders. I'd love to grind fundamental shit, but how do I know that I'm not reinforcing bad habits and wasting my time?

Scott Robertson's How To Draw was the first book I found that actually treated me like I didn't know how to draw a straight line or an ellipse.

People recommend shit like Loomis where it's assumed you already know how a sphere works.

Procreate is fucking awesome. I own every drawing/painting app out there and procreate is seriously miles ahead of literally everything else. Plus, it's updated often with actual tangible updates, not just "performance improvements".

If they ported procreate to PC I'd pay $100 for it in a heartbeat. There is no desktop program that comes close to procreate's interface and brush engine.
