Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Do not forget to resize and crop your images before uploading them otherwise the autists will complain.

Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," consult the sticky: >>1579290

This thread's study theme is tiki, or to be more precise, subtracting forms from cylinders. don't worry about accurately rendering, just show you understand how to do the exercise. you can pick your own tiki if you want as long as its cylindrical.

Tried this after looking through another thread.

Damn it was hard, but it felt good to try and reach for something so extreme. I don't think I did a very good job. I also have some questions about foreshortening, especially for extreme views like this (worm's eye? I guess?). Is it the forms themselves that give us the feel of forshortening? Like how the lines of the various forms overlap as they come together? Is that how we explain to the viewer that an object is receding into the distance? Is it the subtle contours? The shading? I feel I sort of got some of the forms ok, but as a whole this doesn't look foreshortened to me at all and instead looks like I drew some person with some serious deformities. Any ideas / crit / directions you can point me towards? I'm also working through Dynamic Sketching and will have boxes in perspective to post up shortly. But those shapes are simple and easy to read... the human body is not. At least not for me.

Yeah, if you are drawing it from reference practice drawing it without looking at the reference as well. Lots of people can get to a level where they are reasonably good at drawing from observation... being able to draw from imagination, that's where the real masters are able to show off. So practice drawing the same thing, but without looking at any reference and doing it only from memory and logic.

I don't think I broke down the process far enough, but whatever.
Are you doing any sort of construction? If not you should be. Breaking down into basic shapes before building off on anything will get you results. The refining the base you build comes down to the knowledge of the subject you're drawing. The more you know, the farther you can take it.
Think about your shapes logically. Your drawing in perspective is not taking into account all the basic plains. Boxes are great, they'll help tons with keeping your angles consistent and figuring out what should be in view.
It looks like you're trying hard to keep your proportions consistent from body to body, but she looks short to me. If that's what your going for, then that's fine, and at least you're making conscious decisions. Just seems off to me for an averagely proportioned body.
Hope this helps.

Your basic lines are way off. I'd recommend starting with a basic outline sketch. Compare curves aor angles with ref as you're doing it. Only once you're happy with it start adding colours and value.
The body is too chunky, yet too short length ways.
The colours seem okay, but they are blended poorly.
Good effort.

well i've never done grid drawing once in my fucking life. ive heard of tracing having its advantages, especially in portrait/figure stuff.

and there really isnt much to say about negative space drawing. take a look at my pic (the left is mine and im the star destroyer guy from above, this is some of the stuff ive been working on instead of the other thing). you can use the space that in between the objects to check your forms and what not. you can see that mine is fairly close to ref.

anyways read loomis, i havent read fun with pencil but i did go through a lot of his head and hands book which would be helpful for you as youre obviously interest in portrait stuff. also read perspective made easy by norling. book of those are definitely within your abilities.

you need to work on your values big time too. i would just watch youtube videos explaining how they work and do exercises. its just something you need to practice and dont be afraid to push them

your lines seems good enough. but if you need more help check peter hans dynamic sketching video.

to practice values, chose portraits/figures with strong directional light from one direction, preferable in black and white for now. with that reference pic you dont have enough information to work with at your skill level. you need stronger contrasts to understand how it works though you seem to have the right idea

Your lines are off. Your face is jutting out forward. An easy thing I do is imagine lines going from one part of the face to another (shown here as red lines) the front tip of the hair is in line with the bottom of tip of the chin more or less, so use something like that as a basic starter point then you can work on the nose and mouth, again using a line for spacing relations.
I'm no pro, and I don't know if anyone else does this, but I do it and I can get fairly accurate proportions quickly. My sketch took me literally a minute and a half. It's not perfect, but It's close.

I tryed using my whole arm to draw some simple practise stuff but my shoulder couldn't handle the weight of my entire arm for more than 4 minutes. Then i continued with my uper arm almost pressed to my chest but that weird looking T-rex movement wasnt much comfortable either, my shoulder hurts now. The vertical lines i drew looked terrible, holding the weight of my arm and drawing a straight line at the same time seemed almost imposible. I serously hope that im doing it wrong, cause if that is what drawing with the whole arm is then i rather limmit it to my wrist.

When you are recoloring something greyscale, don't use a single color. You should be picking at least three colors; you get your base color, then you shift the hue of that color and lighten it to make your highlight color, and shift hue in the opposite direction and darken, for your shadow. This gives you a more natural image. Avoid dodge and burn, it's not an accurate representation of how light falls.

Don't smudge your colours together. Block in all your colours and then gradate edges as needed. Try mixing all of your colours beforehand, don't blend them in the painting. That way for the process you're just putting every colour where it needs to go, then smoothing transitions to other colours where necessary. Do a layer for midtones, then one for shading, and maybe a separate for highlights and glazes. Keep your colours simple and clean, if you want to go more complex make sure what you have is already satisfying as is.

Think of the picture as abstracted into simple areas of colour. Start with a clean impression of the areas of tone, and then work up to a more realistic rendering on top of that, cleaning/smoothing edges and gradations as needed while adding areas of colour. Don't try to sketch the colours with a thin brush, it looks awful unless you know what you're doing.

Simple areas of colour, clean gradated transitions, slowly build detail doing passes over your less realistic impression.

Both the eye lids and lips follow similar principles. They are both folds of skin wrapped around a spherical / cylindrical object. The eye lids, wrap around the eye ball, and the lips wrap around the teeth. The each open and close, so imagine them closed and fully surrounding the interior object. Then imagine them being spread open (like curtains) revealing the object beneath.

Practice wrapping some spheres and cylinders with "skin" then move to eyes and lips

Learning the muscles of the face isn't important really. At least not until you get rather advanced and want to understand facial expressions really well. The muscles in the face have almost no perceptible influence on the surface forms of the face (with the exception of the masseter). Most of the face is fat and cartilage. You are better off learning the skull and the planes of the face, then the individual features. Muscles of are the least important thing.

No. Because while you need to work on your line control the basic construction you have there works. The box is appropriately lined up to it's too vanishing points (assuming those lines go off to the left and right and connect to a single point on each side). The shadow, that's a tougher one. Where is your light source? Depending on where it is that shadow might be longer than the box, it might even warp and widen as it moves away from the box and lightsource, or it might be smaller than the box. It all depends. Is it even worth finishing? If it is I'll redo the mouth because i was getting really frustrated at that point. I am way too slow, it took me two hours to do that much because I always have to redraw lines over and over to get them to not be misplaced. The shadows confuse me.

If this took you two hours already you may want to finish it, but if it were me I'd try again.

Remember this anon, you can use your logic to help inform your decisions. The tiki head you are drawing is segment of a cylinder. Start with that shape. Simplify all the other shapes and then refine them from there.

Honestly what you have is looking all right so far. You are getting a good feeling of it being a 3 dimensional object. The depth in the eyes as they recede and curve away as well as the same depth in the mouth as it recedes and curves away is doing a good job of convincing me it's a 3d object. I think you are on the right track. The teeth need a bit of work but other than that I think it's coming along. But I do suggest taking a break and trying it again later with fresh eyes.

Practice using your arm instead of your wrist. Do super imposed lines (Check Peter Han's stuff or Proko how to control your pencil). Practice drawing straight lines between two arbitrary points on a page. It's gonna start out looking wobbly or not at all on target. But focus and practice and it will get better. Actual line weight and nice lines from sketching will come with practice. But getting to be able to do straight lines is a good stepping stone for a beginner. Straight lines require confidence, and practicing them will get you in the habit of drawing larger objects with your arm. You should only use your wrist for smaller stuff.

A few things anon. Despite what some people will tell you, the first stage of acquiring any skill is being bad at it. So yes it is possible to get good.

Second thing, whatever it is that drives you it better be strong and powerful because being a skilled artist is not something you will achieve overnight. It will take years and then some, for a true master it will never end you spend the rest of your life striving to get better.

Lastly- It is good that you are going through those books. It is good that you are drawing. If you want to get better actually doing it is the one thing you have to do. I wouldn't worry too much about where you are at skill wise at this stage. In the beginning mileage and building up a habit of drawing often is the most important (read that again). Keep drawing. Draw another 10-50 drawings and come back. If you can stick with it that long you will be one step closer.

Anyone can become amazing at sketching and shit. It just takes a lot of practice. Try to allow like one hour everyday where you sketch and try to improve. You know? When you get better you can move on to more advanced shit. Have people pose for you and try to remember the blocking and stuff from the book. Like breaking things down into shapes and stuff. Keep going. Eventually you can put what YOU imagine onto a piece of paper or a canvas. I believe in you. You can do it. Don't give up. ALso, when being jealous thats cool, just try to ask questions to understand their process and shit. Maybe it would help you become better. :)

Get some objects with a flat color (not shiny). Get a single light source, or possibly two at most. Turn them on and use them to experiment on your own. You can buy these simple objects at a craft store. Get a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, cone, cylinder etc and whatever else strikes your fancy.

Trust me, I'm a CG artist. This is much better than trusting some computer algorithm to tell you about the real world. And if you want to try the "I'm poor" excuse you can construct these things out of thick paper and tape/glue so there's really no excuse.

When people say "Peter Han" are they just talking about those two half hour videos on sketching?

Or is there more stuff that I'm missing?

And on that same note, do I have to get all that bullshit he said, or is normal paper and a normal felttip pen fine?

Is learning to draw necessary to learn to paint digitally?
All I really want is to illustrate nudes for my smut novel in writing on my intuos pro large.

>>2165021
There's a series of classes he put out, you should buy all of that shit he suggested.
There's a guy who works draw a box dot com which is essentially a watered down version that you can use a sketch pad and felt tip with.
I started it but he has a paywall around the third lesson that requires a patreon account to watch his instructional videos on what is essentially "studying"

>>2165030
So you would think the best option is to buy all the Han shit and then do his 'series of classes' ? And if so, where the hell is that series?

Or is it basically the same thing if I do 'draw a box' and/or just use normal materials?

The guy who did box took the peter han class and watered down the course, I would advise going with peter han.

Sorry for shitty image.
Thoughts on this? I'm aware the shading is horrid, tried something new cause it's my weakest point by far.

I know that this isn't much, but would you guys think about this hand, mug and anime-ish girls I drew ?

Your criticism is welcome and I haven't bought a sketchpad yet (I will eventually).

Lastly, would it be a good idea to check out Mark Crilley's vids and books to get better at drawing anime ?

Or is there someone even better ?

its quite good, the only error I see is your top and bottom bulge out too far,
the top and bottom of the original are all defined within the cylinder.

What part of the book does he explain that? Still early into it, I guess he explains it later.

The ones on CG Peers is the workshop, not the class. Another anon not long ago uploaded the entire 8 week lecture on Peter Han's class in one of the "is draw a box good?" thread. The class goes more in-depth on how to do the exercises.

I don't have link, but I'm sure someone here has it.

oh so youre right, thanks ill download it out of interest.

it starts on 049 goes right through to the brewer method.
its that cone of vision stuff. on page 50, if your circle of vision is 30 degrees each way, and your vanishing points are like 45 each way, 2x45 = 90. or 60 /30 = 90.

I don't really understand it myself.

That's odd that the grid wasn't explained earlier in the book. I suppose I'll free hand and eyeball it as best as possible. I'm not far from the explanation, so maybe there's a reason why.

How is the posing?
What can I better? I used Filthy Frank as a model because, I watched a video of his beforehand.
Any artists I could look into?
