dynamic lines.

USing line thickness depicting areas of the image that are in movement, or closer or more back in the back ground is what makes line art.

I use AutoHotkey to change Capslock to another Control key under Windows, as well as to change hotkeys for old games that don't support that feature natively. It's a very powerful program that can make macro scripts for just about anything. If there's a keyboard shortcut for something you want done in SAI, AutoHotkey will be able to change your mousewheel to that key combination.

>>2158233
Set a time limit, shut yourself off from all distractions, and work. Just work. You need to be more worried about your process than the finished piece. Enjoy what you're doing, have a goal in mind, and the finished piece will produce itself. I know that sounds very stupid, but I think you might be overthinking this.

>>2157381
Similar to the above answer: what exactly is "final line art" to you? I draw as a hobby and most of the drawings I make are for my own use, so I know a piece is done when it satisfies the requirement of letting me know what I'm trying to convey at some latter date. If you have some kind of goal in mind that you can't articulate for yourself, you're never going to reach it except by accident. When in doubt, just pick some arbitrary measure of success (i.e. I worked on this for 3 hours) and then move on to the next piece. Putting in enough mileage will get you to where you want to go eventually (if you're sensible about how you invest your time).

Unless you have a very good reason for needing to please the most autistic artist, you should worry about finding an approach to drawing that works for you and you alone.

It seems to me (a different anon than the one you quoted), that you're placing other people's perception of your work over the progression of your actual work. Look, friend, everyone makes bad pieces. Everyone messes up. The very "failure" that you're afraid of are going to show you your path to getting better. Make a bunch of "happy accidents" and get over yourself.

It wouldn't surprise me if you're correct. The reason I might do that is because to me everything I draw looks like garbage. I guess I see some progress in my trash but I'm still bothered by how shit it is. Also I have shit self esteem and I'm hyper hyper-critical of my stuff.

There is a distinct difference between eye level and the horizon line. Eye level is what the horizon line is on landscapes and cityscapes. But when dealing with forms not attached to the ground or that tilt, that form's horizon line shifts; take the tilt of a pelvis, for example, the front face of the bowl tilts downward raising the horizon line of the bowl or box. Then to rotate the box left or right, we just move the vanishing points along that firm's horizon line. If you want to rotate the front of the form left, you move the vanishing points right. And vice versa.

i don't know much about perspective books as i was taught in person for most of the more complicated bullshit, but what i have seen of most perspective books is they do a piss poor job of explaining what they are doing so when you look at the images you don't know if in your assumption or not.

whenever some asks about the scot robertson books i have to rely on what i already know about perspective to try and help explain what that page wants you to do, so reading comprehension isn't the key to what you need, what you need to go through those books is someone who already knows to explain the shit that they don't explain well...

i would say watch a video series, but the only one i know of has 90%+ padding in it to the point i consider it unwatchable, however, if you get stumped on the books, the video series will probably give you answers faster than a 4chan explanation will.

Hey, is there a rule of thumb when creating a new digital canvas? It always feels like it's too low in the resolution, but when I crank it up, it gets to about 100Mbs.... Is that normal? Should it be more?

>> No.2160151

>>2160141
I have things that typically range from 50MB to 200MB depending on number of layers. There's even one file that's at 600MB, but that's not the norm for me.

What matters is pixel dimensions. If it's a painting, 3000px on the shorter end is good. Shrink down as needed when you're ready to post it online. If it's intended for print, then you need to know the dpi the printer works at, and the dimensions of the final product in inches, and that will determine what file size you should be working at.

If storage space is a concern, make sure you're working at 8bit color mode instead of 16bit. For most purposes it won't have a visual difference for painters, but if you're doing lots of levels and other adjustments you will lose more data working in 8bit instead of 16bit. That's an oversimplification based on what I recall, but you can always google that stuff for more info.

There's no rule of thumb..

6x4k is about 100-200mb yea it'll be about that in PSD form.

You don't have to work in that high a res.. You can try to paint 1920x1080 if your PC can't handle it.. and if you need to get something REALLY tight you can take that peice out into a new document,(200 px face or something) Res it up to 1k Paint away, Size it down again, and plug it back in for _Much Tighter_ look.

>Hybrid
If you have a decent desktop, or see yourself getting one in the future, the hybrid can function as a cintiq 13HD - getting you more use in the long run. You can't do this with the companion 1.

>Older tablet pcs
There are lenovo thinkpad X-series, Fujitsu lifebooks, hp elitebooks(?), and many others out there that aren't that old and you could get for cheap on ebay. As long as you're doing painting, they could easily be powerful enough for your needs. I'd check out forum.tabletpcreview.com , and follow the instructions for making a recommendation thread based of your needs and budget.

>Newer slate tablet pcs
The surface pro (1-3) I hear are good, though 3 uses N-trig instead of wacom and I haven't done any recent research on how well it pans out for painting. I think I heard there were over-sampling issues that introduce a lot of jitter if you draw very slow lines.

________
Either way I'd do thorough research on the companion 1 - namely if the battery is replaceable and what the major common issues people have with the thing. I've heard the companion 2 has weirdly loud fans for example. For everything you're considering, look up the benchmarks of the CPU you'd be getting so that you have an idea of how much faster/slower any given machine might be.

When a light source is colored, like a room that is lit by candle or sunlight is shining through blue glass, what is the best technique for conveying that in digital painting? Do I lay down a "true" base color and paint a translucent blue/yellow over top it, or do I take the filter color and add a slight amount of the true color to it before painting?

Don't know if this is the place to ask, but how do I get back into art? College killed my love for it, although it was just a two year I met some of the most worthless teachers and yet at the same time I met a lot of talented people that didn't even need to be there. Should I just quit and keep it as a hobby for once in a blue moon or should I try and motivate myself to practice daily again?
I guess I should ask what inspires the people here to do what they do.

Is one study from a photo while the other is from life? If so that's the main issue.

Otherwise you just might be too reliant on digital shortcuts, tools and workflow. It could also be a scale issue, where you're used to drawing small on a tablet instead of drawing large on a huge sketchpad.

>> No.2162232

>>2162207
Have specific concrete goals. Do those goals necessitate gitting gud? Or can art just be a hobby as it doesn't relate to your greater goals in life?

The other thing is you probably forgot to have fun with your art. Why did you get into it in the first place? Probably because it was fun at some point. Do you like drawing Master Chief riding unicorns, but you don't have the skills to do it well yet? Draw it anyway. Experiment and have fun - constant study with no fun is a good way to kill a passion, especially when your skills aren't up to par yet.

It's also okay to take a break from art if it means you'll get back into it better than ever. You're only racing with yourself - you don't need to maximize your art gains and cut everything else out of your life if you won't enjoy the process. Art is all about enjoying the journey.

Both approaches can work - just depends on preference. What's more important is understanding the physics of color and light. For example, in the absence of all other light sources, a perfectly red ball lit by a perfectly blue light wouldn't be some purple color, but black. This is because a pure red object is one that only reflects red wavelengths of light - since blue light has no red wavelengths, no light is reflected by the red ball.

Likewise if you have a cyan ball (Blue+Green) lit by a yellow light (Red+Green), the object will look green, because that's the only wavelength of light that's both emitted and reflected in this scenario.

In real world examples you'll rarely have a pure R,G, or B light source, or an object that's super pure in color. Most instances of the above scenarios might have you see a darkening and greatly desaturating effect compared to what you might expect.

Read through http://www.huevaluechroma.com/ . It's dense, so revisit it periodically.

unless u have a strong internal idea of how u want ur painting to come out, it'll never get out of that 'my painting looks like shit' feel

to address this, if you're not pro-tier yet, every stage you take your image thru has to be 100% en pointe before u take it to the next stage (eg: rough sketch >> refined sketch >> lines >> flats >> rendering)

otherwise, something you let slip in one stage will totally screw with you for the rest of the process (eg: bad anatomy bc loose sketch, bad color choices during flats stage, etc)

>> No.2163298

>>2163294
Not this anon but to expand a bit more on what they said: Do several attempts before you settle on something to move forward with. Even pro artists will do sketches and studies before diving into something. Don't believe what you see on youtube and other stuff where they seem to just create something in a single go. It is possible, but you should not be afraid of trying to do something several times before settling for what you have and moving forward. If your initial sketches don't turn out well, do them again. If they still don't turn out well get some reference and try to use it to help with your sketches. Do this until your base is solid, then move onto the refining stage then the rest of it.

Doing things several times will also result in valuable practice and allow you to attempt to solve the problem multiple times. Solving a problem once does not mean you can do it again. You need to tackle something multiple times in order to master it.

So this morning when i started up photoshop, ready to procastinate, i noticed that my zoom wasnt working properly.
It was in fact not working as yesterday.
Now instead of it just zooming in, it brings up a small box that i now have to drag over the area where i want to zoom in, and when i want to zoom out, i have to hold alt+Z and click away.
Tried looking for a solution on the old Google, and didnt find anything that really helped

Say, I think of drawing a nose and immediately I end up stuck, doing whatever. I don't have as much problems with eyes, but I tend to overfocus on making them to please me.

The only thing that I know, is that my best drawings (so far) seems to happen when I'm some kind of trance, where I completely lose track of shit and that my mind become rather silent. The problem is that I don't know what or how to trigger the damn thing.

Any suggestions?

"somehow landing yourself a job" isn't how it happens to people online, contrary to how it may seem. these people work their asses off, draw a lot more than what you see online, and focus on something to be good at. i know we all hate thinking about the future, but you have to visualize some sort of goal and work towards that. asking people with specific experience (the job you want) will give you a clearer picture of what steps to take, and maybe that'll help more than advice from some rando on 4chan.

just keep drawing, and put your stuff out there. get better, master those fundamentals, talk to other artists. surrounding yourself with people who are better than you at art is a damn good way to improve. but whatever works for you, man. there is no secret, you just need pencil mileage, networking, and maybe a little luck.

If so, stop doing that.
To get in the mood do warm ups, basic gesture drawing or just the lines, arches and elipses from peter hans class will work. 5-10 minutes of that will get the brain working, light hand stretching also helps a great deal.

Also, you should use a reference or two if you're drawing eyes and noses as a beginner. It's how you build up a visual library so that you're not just drawing an oval with eye lashes. You need to perceive the eye as a 3d object infront of you with your mind then draw the part that you could see from your perspective. If you're doing that it's no longer symbol drawing.

I don't believe there's a formula for "anime", it's too wide and it goes from generic bug eyes+pointy chin+big head+unhealthily small noses, etc. to more crazy realistic but abstract things like for example Pong-The Animation. You can go with a specific style of a specific manga artist or a specific series or a specific animation studio, for that just pick the one you like the most and study what makes them what they are. I don't know a whole lot about anime or japanese culture or whatever but if you asked me about Japan artists' style, I'd guess they almost automatically have an "anime" style in any shape or form thanks to the overexposition to anime and manga in a lot of media. Or something like that. It's like an accent... a visual accent maybe?

But don't mind me, that's just how I see it and how I would do it. Good luck though.

Although other anon is right that sweater is same (or almost same) value as the hair, there are many value changes in it that indicate the folds.

They are more significant than the pattern that you are focusing on. If you are going to treat the whole sweater with those strokes in >>2166887 it's not gonna turn out well imho.

Think more about how you will indicate the areas of shade and light on the sweater, otherwise it will turn out looking very flat and you will have wasted a lot of your time. Of course you can darken/lighten the shading after you apply the texture, but I think that's inefficient. Better to plan a bit more in the beginning what you want to do with the big values. I think the hair is nice.

Different people have different preferences, and even then the same artist can use different approaches depending on the end results they want. Try them all out for yourself and see what you enjoy and what consistently gives you good results.

I personally like to sketch>paint most of the time. A line art step takes tons of time and I don't enjoy working with lines digitally. You then have to invest more time getting rid of the lines for the most part if you want a painterly look. It can help solve complex forms early on though.

Some people can just jump into paint well, but more often than not that leads me to drawing problems. It's also tricky to paint when you haven't established any framework on the canvas of what you're painting. A sketch solves some of the drawing problems, leaving you to think mostly about light, value, color and edges. Figuring out drawing with all of that simultaneously is difficult and inconsistent.

Observe and draw a variety of people - preferably from life if you can. It may help do do a slight caricature of each head you draw, or at the very least pay attention to what makes a given head unique compared to the idealized average model head you've developed internally. Draw people in parks, at bus stops, in coffee shops, etc.

You can also find a variety of faces online if you know where to look. You don't want photoshopped photos of models, or friends posing for facebook photos. Instead you want candid photos in natural lighting. I think you can find that on flickr. The photos I'm thinking of are like these:
http://oh-hi.info/2014_9-12/?from=B0039620-y600px.jpg
Not every photo is good of course, but skipping around you should be able to find plenty of faces for quick studies. Focus on shape and proportion - not lighting, color or rendering. Try to fill sketchbook pages with many heads. Try to invent new heads from memory based on what you studied previously - or go in a new direction altogether.

The gist is play around with shapes and proportions. Don't stick to a rigid construction model for the head, but instead morph and adapt it to suit your needs for any given head.

Resources that talk about color to varying extents:

>Color and Light by James Gurney
A lot of the material in this can be found on his blog as well. It's more so explaining light phenomenon and talking about color and palettes. It's not a step by step guide or anything.

This one is very dense and technical. You'll have to revisit it multiple times, as you'll learn something new each time.

_____

Here's a general approach I'd recommend for learning color. First, get some basic knowledge on how color and light works. Next comes practice observing color from life.

Color can be dividing into three dimensions: hue, value and chroma (or hue, brightness, saturation if you're thinking in terms of digital painting software). Value is the only component that can be represented well on it's own, and it goes a long way towards a good/believable picture. Study that first and gain some proficiency. Paint still lifes (from life, not photos), but do them in grayscale. What value does the lit portion of the red mug on your desk look like to you? What value is the shadow portion? It can help to think about (or physically hold in front of you) a square of pure white or pure black next to the object to try to place it accurately on the value scale.

>> No.2168165

>>2168109
>>2168163
(2/2)
Once you have that down moderately well, you can move into limited palettes. Here you want to focus on learning color temperature (warm vs cool). Most color shifts are often a temperature shift: Graying a yellow cools it, while adding a vibrant red warms it. If you're working traditionally, here you'd want to make your palette from blending black, white, a warm red, and a cool red (do some research on which pigments are warm and cool). Now paint still lifes like in the step before. Not only do you have control over value, but now also saturation and temperature. Ask yourself about temperature shifts: is the shadow side of the red mug only darker in value, or is it also a cooler temperature? Do this until you're proficient.

Next you can work in more expanded palettes. Gurney has a few posts on gamut masking that's relevant: http://pastebin.com/rQ2EVg4J . You can also opt to work without that limitation, as what you essentially have now that the previous step didn't is a wider hue range. The same principals of value and color temperature apply. Do a ton of still lifes until you become proficient.

Remember that color is relative - it's not so important that you get the absolute colors accurate, but instead get your color relationships accurate. Working with paints for example, you cannot get a white as bright as an actual light source in front of you, or a dark that's darker than your black pigment. You've always been working with a limited palette in a sense, but the successful studies likely got the color relationships correct.

>> No.2168168

>>2168109
>>2168163
>>2168165
(3/2)
_________

That should get you started with understanding color, observing it accurately, and reproducing it accurately. That said, you want to make sure that your drawing skills are up to par before worrying about value or color. Always focus on the most basal skill that needs work instead of jumping ahead.

Now if you wanted to learn color theory for inventing colors - there are a few resources out there but I don't recall any to recommend. Just pay attention to how colors operate in real life, and do a ton of master studies of paintings with strong color usage. Always think about contrast, not just in value but contrast in hue and in saturation. Think about how much contrast you're using, and where. A smart usage of contrast should yield a visually appealing picture.

If it's freelancing you might want to check out Art of Freelancing, but I highly recommend listening to related episodes of the Seanwes podcast. I believe Clint Cearley should have a video on breaking into the art industry as well.

For freelance work, you want to put your work out there and market yourself, but you also want to send out your portfolio to the big name clients - namely the art directors. Note that it can months before you even hear back from any of them assuming your work is good. If you do get hired, then it's a matter of being a pleasure to work with, doing a good job, doing it on time or early, and being a professional. That will secure more work in the future.

Again, I can't give better specifics than that as I myself am still on the polishing the portfolio stage, but I'm probably delusional about my skill level as well. Just in case, be sure to compare your work side by side with what your prospective client publishes, and be honest whether you match that caliber of work (close probably won't cut it).

Probably a stupid question here. Recently I've really got into oil painting, but whenever I want to make something really good I have to sketch on the canvas first with greylead to get it right. Obviously painting over the lead fucks up the colour of the paint and smudges the lead around. What should I be doing instead to avoid this?

Is it cheating or bad practice to try to understand something by drawing over it. I feel like it is ok but I don't want to develop bad habits and this can really only be done in digital so I'm curious.

This is a hobby for me btw.

Not at all. It'd only be bad practice if that's literally all the practice you ever do.

It's called tracing and it can be done with tracing paper. The way you're using it is a pretty common technique for understanding 3d space and is mostly used on people. Like >>2168621 says, don't rely entirely on it and never construct dynamic things that way.

I've been taught in the past to sketch with paint. If you're painting from imagination, you could sketch it out on paper and use that for reference.

Whatchu do dawg is figure out the rotation of the box by placing its 2 vanishing points
Then draw a vertical line that intersects the left most vp
Somewhere on that vertical line, place a point...a vp3. In this case, vp3 will be below the horizon.
Now connect any lines that would travel away from you to vp3 and create the tilted box

Tl;dr rotate the box on the X,Y axis then tilt along the Z axis by using an auxiliary vanishing point.

I just upgraded form a Bamboo to a Huion h610. I installed the drivers , started to use it and noticed the lines came out sort of jitterish (Both in SAI and Photoshop). did I fucked up during installation? anything you recommend me to do to fix this?

make sure windows ink is off. Also make sure that you uninstalled the other drivers you're not using, and also make sure flicks is off.

Good luck

already done, maybe I just have to charge the pen some more time, as it says in the manual
"if the line is unstable it means you have to charge"
i should´ve probably read that thing before making a post here...
oh well,Thanks btw!

I'm not trying to literally "rip off" Sycras style. I'm indeed influenced by him, because I'm watching him for some years now, and I like his messy/sharp style. Also I never analyzed any of his drawings to apply his style on my drawings. I just happen to like sharp and messy stuff.

Once I get to this point, I'm not really how to go further. I know it looks unfinished because of it's lack of detail, but I just don't know where to start

Why not go for squid details? Take a peek at the texture and coloration of squids. right now everything looks really doughey, primarily from the texture you've got going on with the brush.

> I just don't know where to start
This is basically just a lack of a visual library. keep at it, and make sure to do some texture studies, since that and light bounce/light scattering seem to be your biggest blocks right now.

Don't be afraid to cross reference and work with other brushes,as well.

i doubt this exists but im wondering if there's such a tool or function in photoshop that does this.

lets say im painting a spherical object and i have all the hue/values/saturation down but i need to paint a repeating design/pattern on it thats going to go all the way around, and obviously through all the different colors/values.

is there such a tool that can 'pull values from up ahead' continuously so you dont have to keep painstaking picking the values that are darker/lighter than the area youre painting on?

>> No.2170232

>>2170224
yeah but it's hard to get it right without a lot of layering. It also messes with the shading a bit with a grayscale, but I'd play around with it a bit. Overlay's better for coloring grayscale, since it doesn't mess with the values as much.
