I feel you are focussing too much on the rendering, and not enough on the point of your image. Like...yeah, you painted Venom. Cool. But he is just standing there next to a wall with a very stiff pose. Boring.

Ask yourself--what is it about the character that makes him, well, HIM? How can you show this through posing/body language? Is there a better viewpoint or composition you could have chosen? What is he doing? Why? Could you have exaggerated some parts of this image? How far can you push things before they start to fall apart? Could you have come up with a different or better arrangement using his shadow for a different composition or to be able to tell some other story? What is happening outside of the picture frame?

Small study for an indie film movie poster I got asked to work on. The final is going to be a Drew Struzan-esque compositon with all the characters.

this is oil on shitty canvas panel. critiques are welcome

I think you should just paint in greyscale at the moment. Make sure you have a good understanding of value and edges (yours has everything blurry) and painting, get all that under control. Then afterwards jump into colour. In my opinion you learn the most just painting straight in colour, but you can only do this if you know your values well.

>> No.2151295

>>2151218
You're totally right. I made a half-assed sketch as warm-up (procrastination) that I quickly got carried away with. I have a bad habit of letting pieces with a plan sit in WIP-limbo while I invest time into stuff like the OP. Thanks for calling me out before I poured more hours into it.

>> No.2151298

>>2151291
Looks quite nice actually! If you are doing a Struzan approach though, why not work closer to how he did? Like with acrylics and pencil crayons and stuff. I think it's a faster/easier way of achieving some of the level of detail and sharpness needed.

Have you figured out the entire composition yet? Is there a reason his portrait is viewed from the side? Also I assume you will do the ear fully in the final. It looks fine as a block-in for a study, but for a finished piece you will want it properly painted out.

Probably, but I can't remember specifics. Off the top of my head there's a basic primer here that talks a bit about stuff like that:
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm

There's also understanding how light works to an extent. This one is complex but worth revisiting many times:
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/

Gurney's Color and Light is also great. Lots of nuggets of info, but most can be found on his blog. I hear Robertson's How to Render is good, but I haven't checked that out yet.

All I'm trying to do is think about the direction of the light, how it affects basic forms that resemble what I need, and keeping major planes in mind.

As far as textures go, it's mostly a matter of knowing what you roughly want the end finish to look like, and playing around with tools to get what you want. I used some of the more basic Jaime Jones brushes for block-in and rendering, and some of his more speckled brushes for things like the highlights that I wanted to stand out. You can also do washes of color in different layer modes (overlay, multiply, etc) if you need to shift the hue, value or saturation but mostly preserve texture or brushwork.

Lastly, pay attention to marks and brushwork in pieces by artists you like, then try to incorporate them on your own.

Looks great at the moment, but you could do with pushing your values very slightly on the face. Just little pockets of near-black like in the ears and in the middle of eye and nose would really help create a bit of depth, and pushing your lights a little lighter too

It's kind of unclear what they are walking towards. It feels empty but there looks to be something there? Or are those more trees? It's not clear. I would make it an obvious destination (it can be subtle but obvious if you know what I mean). Maybe a building or somehting. Or another figure.

Also the trees are bland. Take a look at some reference of real trees and take note of how they grow. How to the branches split off the main trunk? Are there any interesting shapes of angles you didn't think of? Are there lots of tiny branches as well? Is the bark peeling off in places, or covered in lichen?

Hey, I'm going to give you some advice since I like this manga. Mostly about the hair.
But first the obvious stuff : the ear placement is wrong. You should study the skull. Even with the mask and the hair hiding most of the face, it becomes apparent that you need to work on the planes of it (look at how you shaded the upper part of the nose and the eye for example). This is also why the light source makes no sense. The chin and neck area is off.

The fall of the hair seems unnatural, probably also because you don't have the skull figured out well. Look at how hair works - you made it fall in this very regular way, it looks like a hat (especially because some of the edges are so hard - really take time to do proper edges, as of now you seem to arbitrarily make them either soft or hard, same for the lineart, you either erase it or leave it in random places), you should shade individual locks and not just make the whole form go from a lighter to a darker value. Think about where exactly the hair grows from and delineate large locks which flow in either the same or in opposite directions - this applies even to shorter hair. Shorter hair is generally more voluminous btw, Kaneki's hair especially has lots of volume going on, look at Ishida's paintings, it's fluffy. In your pic the hair is not painted in sections, plus the light source doesn't make sense yet again. The fall of the light and the colors are not so regular either when it comes to hair. Its form is a lot more complex than that of a flat surface and light scatters through it more easily. Hair as light as his would have a value range which would be a lot lighter. Where have you seen light hair which has such dark values which arent occlusion shadows in its value range? Another advice I have is don't just use brown for shadows, shadow tone depends on the surroundings.

Pic related to the whole hair talk; looking at canon is important when you do fanart.

you get tierd when you draw because you push too hard on the pencil. Let it slide across the paper.
Your pose is unnatural because you lack experience. Study real humans.
Your topic is generic because you didn't think about what you were drawing before you started, you didn't do research nor consider what you really wanted it to become.
Take a break from drawing from imagination for a while and focus on learning the fundamental rules of drawing and design.

You have a ways to go but that's not a bad start. A ignorant person might call you talented but it's clear that you've put in a bit of legwork considering your attention to functional details rather than adding belts and knives.

Not bad for a first attempt. You can use the lasso tool to select an area and move it around, for instance to fix the eye positions rather than repaint from scratch. You can also try using the mixer brush tool (right click the brush icon and select it). That will give you some blending more akin to oils if that's what you are used to.

Basically just experiment with the tools a bit as you do this.

Well if you're not profiting it's not a big deal then. But I would avoid putting these in a portfolio to get work, and if you do get work then don't use this process unless you took the photo.

Not trying to be mean man but you really need more understanding before trying to paint an imaginary environment. Your composition is poor with no real focal point or foreground. Because of your background my eye just shoots straight off your painting. It also appears that you don't really understand how basic forms and lighting work.

If I were you I would head back to fundamentals. But I know that's never the answer anyone wants to hear.. so if you really wanted to keep working on this, try looking up some real world references and incorporate them into your painting. Maybe add some real rocks or some bushes in the foreground or something. There's cool looking rock formations that can look alien and actually exist. Right now its all just like a golf course or something. If you are trying to draw ribs for your structure, look up some whale ribs or any ribs and draw those bad boys. It will help your painting a little bit at least.

Sorry if this sounds mean. Just keep at it.

okay I dont trust this new beginner thread so posting here. A thing crossed my mind while i was painting it, wouldn't painting animals be better than still life? I mean, even beginner already has most objects one can put in still life in his visual libary, but most of us never saw a bear, a crocodile and such, so animals are more abstract shapes for us, and so they break the symbol drawing better, am I right?

This took me like 10 hours or something.

New to using tablets and draing programs in general. Using Paint Tool Sai at the moment just because I feel the most comfortable with it.

I dont know, I feel im making progress but on the whole I still have such a hard time with learning pretty much everything, it just never stops.

Maybe the picture is hard to say anything about because its too cartoony and tthe composition and colors are all whack (I think?) but I'd love some feedback on what I should improve on.

Also: Drawing rain is hard.
