I could be wrong, but I don't think that's true. Carpal tunnel is mostly about how you move your wrist, not how you move your fingers. As for arthritis, is that even a thing artists get? I hear of tons of artists wither carpal tunnel, but I never heard of one with finger arthritis and I never read that repetitive activity can cause it.

Nevertheless, that grip is still retarded though and you should fix it.

>> No.2141391

>>2141384
its not the repetitive activity, is muscle atrophy, not arthritis, he's gonna cling his hand for long times(see in my post >in the long run), also, is pretty difficult to NOT use your wrist with that grip.

Also tendinitis.

And my personal opinion is, it's dumb, dont use that, train diferent grips, you should never force your joints for long times in the same position, in any kind of exercise, ever.

You're probably hurting your muscles already. Do you squeeze too much? does your hand hurt after a while when drawing? If so, you are going to have problems in the long run. Stretch regularly, there are some exercises to do while you work that might help prevent injuries.

I doesn't matter as long you're drawing on medium/small papers. How you handle your pencils will only matter when you're drawing on big papers and by big i mean bigger than A3 papers, A2 and A1-like formats will generally require an easel, so you will have to change the grip since you will not be drawing horizontally anymore.

Mine did. And every year of primary school I was told I had a shitty grip and should change because I drag my entire hand on the paper while writing, which meant everything looked dirty.
But the thing is, it means I don't have to hold my entire hand aloft, so I don't get tired as easily.

I think maybe my grip explains that I love painting minis so much : I am much more precise and love working tiny surfaces, but as soon as I need to move the hand, I hate it coz I know I'm just gonna dirty everything.

I personally use this one most of the time. Only changing to do specific kinds of curves or because of discomfort. Basically, this one enables the most range of control and isolation of the tip.

When you press down, there is always resistence, so it's great to be able to isolate the wiggle of the tip. In addition, you add even further stability when pressing down by leveraging the pen on the top 2 fingers which are pressing down in the first place making the potential wiggle go to the back end of the pen which ends up pressing against your hand anyway. At the same time, it is easy to find the optimal angle at which your pen will glide by pushing it around rather than having to press down all the time. A lot of control with this one and not much fatigue.

I will actually slightly modify this grip as well when looking for a certain quality or if I am using a specific tool which calls for the alternate grip.

All in all though, it doesn't matter if you use an OP grip like this if you don't know why it's good or how to make the most use of it.

I change my grip all the time because I don't like to rotate the page to get better lines so I don't really have a grip that's specific, but I don't choke up on the pencil that much I keep it loose like your grandmother's cunt.

The point is you need finger nails. They're practical. Like getting tape, or leaving your marks on your significant others. They're a necessity, tbh

>> No.2152856

>>2152844
A convenience in a very specific scenario is not a necessity. A tiger needs to murder his meal with his teeth/nails to live another week that would define a need. If I can't pick up some change on a counter or open a pocket knife quickly big fucking deal. I always have my nails ground down to a nub and I've never not been able to get change I drop on a counter. I was joking around initially, but I think it's absurd to use a word like "need" for something as superfluous as a goddamn fingernail.

Lmao oranges? Seriously? Like when have I ever been in that tight of a situation where I'm dying of hunger and the only thing around me is oranges? "DAMN IF ONLY MY FINGERNAILS WERE LONGER"

cuz that shit really fucking happens.

Plus this thread is about what kind of grip you use to draw. Why in the fuck are we talking about how short my goddamn fingernails are? I don't NEED them by any means. I've lived a healthy long life without ever having to use fingernails. For Christ sakes.
