Alright I finally watched this and it's a must see for the usual /ic faggot. This is what we want when we talk about education in the art field. Now I understand why Watts traveled to Russia, the guy knows what's up.

Proko's family and Watts traveled to Russia for art appreciation and fun. This was all when Proko was still a teacher at the atelier though.

Don't know how their relationship is now. Plan on asking Jeff what he thinks of Proko next friday night love.

You can go anywhere else in the world to express yourself, the point of this school is to teach what is not being taught around the world.

But if you did watch the video you would have seen, you can express yourself normally, just look at the wife of the asian guy, she did some very outside of the norm art, the catch is, you won't give those to be reviewed inside the classroom since in those classes they give you very specific assignments.

They take a more mechanical aproach to assignments, like other fields do, they ask for specific stuff who showcases specific skills to be appraised objectively like a math or physics assignment would. The deeper meaning of the subject is ignored, you're not trying to make statements, you're being taught a skill so later on you can apply whatever you want to it.

You go there go harness the skills, with the skills learned, you can apply any wacky self-expression bullshit you want and i'll guarantee it will look 500% better than art done by people from schools who only preach self expression.

tl:dr "Learn the rules before breaking it" the school.

Oh man, one of the two places near me is shut down. There's just one atelier left in my state. That's crazy considering there's only a couple dozen places on that map to begin with. Granted this is just "ARC approved" schools which is an umbrella I"m sure even a lot of desirable schools don't fit under for one reason or another. Calarts isn't there for example and I think a lot of people on /ic/ would love to go there (if they could afford it).

While this place seems amazing and all, for some reason I keep on getting this vibe of disconnect between this school and the world. It just seems to exist in a vacuum, with little relation to the outside world. (plus the way they romanticized the place made it seem more like a fantasy environment then a place in real life)
I suppose this appeals to some people, but I just don't know what you would do after you leave this place.
I guess this place just isn't for me personally.

I see what you're saying. But I think that's just how this kinda places are supposed to be. I'm sure most of the people would run outta this place back to home. It takes special people to shut down in a coold and silent place and just work, and work, and work. At the end that's what it takes to git gud.

I love art, but even I don't know if I could take a year of study in that place. Russia is insanely cold, that building must be freezing inside, it seems like you must know some degree of russian, and I don't think it's cheap to move and live there.
I think that most of the foreigners that finish their studies there will be greatly tempted by the school to stay and become teachers themselves, since they desperately need english speaking teachers and others.

If you come outta that place with a degree you could teach art anywhere in the world, I bet Europe art schools will catch you on the fly. I wouldn't stay in Russia certainly.

It's not a bad doc for showing students and the student life, but if you think this is unique; you're falling hard for the Reuters Russian propaganda.
There are fine arts schools preserving the classical painting/drawing techniques all across Europe and North America that look exactly the same if not better.
Just because the art school close to you is filled with pretentious hipsters who throw vaginal blood onto a canvas; it doesn't mean fine arts are dead.
Don't apply to them unless you actually want to work with fine arts.

unfortunately not. the 50s 60s and 70s were not kind to the heritage of art education in the west. many resources were purposely destroyed and burned as symbols of white cultural imperialism.

Your point is? If you have political or ideological issues take them somewhere else. We are talking about art here.
There's this guy Noah Bradley whoe got a degree from one of the most expensive art schools in america, the guy can't even draw people, and he got a degree... See what are we talking about?

I don't think those young people in the docu went to Russia far away from home if they could get the same education oportunity nearer.

Look at the Watts attelier, it only teach you a PART of what this russian academy offers. Those russians are giving a huge palace to acomodate all kind of shit, marble and stone to practice sculpture, horses, quality life modeling, tools, canvas, paint, mortar, miles or paper and shit. Make the numbers. someone is makeing a huge investment in education to have that academy working for mora than a century. I don't think you can get the same deal some where else, at least not at the same cost.

What they have that almost no other schools are the setting and resources. I still think Europe is a better place to learn, particularly Rome or Florence, because of the setting. Yet none of the schools so far as I know put as much effort into the teaching as much as what this Russian academy seems to offer.

In my view, however, none of the academies right now are as good as the ones in the previous centuries, and do not produce works as great.
