"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2144672

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

I think I get what you're saying, but their drawing has the leg more forward than the other leg. I think it would help for them to show that the legs are connected to the same part of the body a bit more. but I'd say the direction isn't a problem, that position is sort of possible. I'd say the bigger issue is the perspective on her stomach is a bit off from the rest of her body, although that could just be due to the lack of rendering making the values seem off.

The way that I learned it is that if someone doesn't have something to say then they really just don't care. I attend an art school, and one of the profs was straight with us, saying that if anyone looks at your art and says things like "not bad, man," they aren't -really- praising you, they just don't care and are being polite. They either see that you're not really trying to improve any and therefore don't see any point in critiquing, or find your work bland and inoffensive.

>> No.2152607

>>2152583
I find its more of the second than the first. People can't really 'tell' at a glance if you're trying to improve, they can however tell something is boring and doesn't hold their interest, which if they were a good critique they'd straight up tell you its boring as shit.
But if its just a gallery or an image board and people are overlooking it, that's usually the case, its just boring.

Nah, being too shit at anything means you get grilled. Being in the limbo of not getting responses, positive or negative, means your work is competent but not striking. It means it's dull to most viewers. At that point, you should study perspective because that is the solution to making anything dull more dynamic. Kim Jung Gi can make anything look awesome because of his understanding of perspective.

There are loads of shitty art that does get praise because there is one striking element or gimmick to it. Gimmick free art doesn't hold much people, specially in regards to people deep in internet culture. Perspective is probably the best striking element in stylized art, but a lot of artists ignore it.

I'm a big fan of Natsumi Kei's works on her colored hairy eyelashes, that's where the whole thing come from. Beside, they looked pretty good on Mion's sprite I did before this one. To begin with, they have impossible natural color, so why not having the same color for the eyelashes like for some people IRL ?

If people took every biological and anatomical reality into account when drawing, you're left with realism (and hell, if you take it beyond any artistic license, basically human photocopying). You could just as easily say eyes aren't supposed to be that big and that's stupid.
You're not wrong, but it's pretty damn obvious the artist wasn't aiming to 100% mirror reality anyway.

Doing something like a RPG game on your own and designing custom sprites and worlds is a great thing to put in your portfolio. And if you're having fun doing it then its just an extra bonus.
since its a 4chan porn game you can also be fairly sure they're not exactly asking for the best of the best, its more of a fun thing.

Bingo, these are called basic forms and the more you work with these forms the better you may mold and shape them together until you realize that you may combine and fit them together that helps you draft whatever you want.

This is the essence of all good drawing, the closer you draw these forms in perspective the better the illusion of space and the more understanding of what compresses and what pulls the closer you'll get to reality.

>Should I push the values harder? Or is the flatness part of the pose I picked and / or a bad use of forms?
the problem is with the drawing. it's the proportions.
the figure is around 7/8 heads tall and the neck is too short considering that. you really needed to give the neck more space.
7 heads in general is pretty tall, and yours is 7 heads tall even though the body is bending. it feels even longer since the part that should be the neck is now distributed into the height or the rest of the body.
so all in all the body feels very elongated.

pic not related by the way. not a redline or anything, i just wanted to try it.

not really. it's about understanding it after all. you can't make a semi-realistic style without knowing realistic ones well. (we're only talking semi realistic here though)

the head wasn't on right.

try to imagine the spine when drawing the neck. you can see where it begins in pic related. it's somewhere behind the ears, between the both of them.
knowing that point can make you more aware of the headshape, and which side the character is facing. it also means it becomes easier to place eyes, ears and the the neck.
most importantly it gives us some consistency.

Well the whole thing looks very blurry because you use soft edges almost everywhere and your value range is very narrow (on any given part of the picture at least, obviously the hair is darker than the skin and so on, but there isn't much difference between the midtones and darkest shadows).
Values and edges are really important to seperate different planes when not using any linework.

Compared to that, the book has so much contrast (white lettering on black background) and an otherwise bright color that it's pretty much all I can look at. You probably want people to look at it since it's important to the joke here, but it shouldn't draw the attention away from everything else, like the face or cleavage - especially since the face looks very appealing. Mute the yellow of the book a bit and exchange the white lettering for a light grey and it won't hog the spotlight nearly as much as it does now.
Then again, the way she's holding the book doesn't seem very believable, I'd rework that part with the help of a reference first.

I'm not copying their artwork just because it looks good. I'm copying their work so I can learn how they did things the correct way. Kind of like how you do a painting study. For me, it's just learning how to draw anthromorphic faces in perspective, that's the hardest. I figured with the rest of the body I can just get reference from human figures.

I don't think there's anything wrong copying people's work for learning purposes. It's like if you're trying to learn piano for the first time. Do you start off by creating your own songs and music? Or do you start learning by playing someone's else work like Beethoven and grow from there?

>> No.2160706

In my opinion its better to study a real animal's head, and compare it to a human's You'll make better connections since you'll discover that there are a lot of similarities between the two and overall being able to draw in perspective of a human head should be applicable to an animal's head. Also, the style that comes with it, is usually what traits the artist's wants to include/omit. Large scale of how much "animal" you want your model to be.

I like it. But using the perspective of the body as a reference, the one of the arms doesn't fit, they're too small.

critique please. The figures lower torso seems really off, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

hmm, I'm not sure. But I think the weirdness is probably due to the positioning of the butt? We're being given a 3/4 view when it seems like a side view would make more sense.
Also the legs are out of proportion but it looks like that was done intentionally based on the style you've chosen.

This is an interesting setting+perspective and I'm looking forward to seeing it once its been polished a bit more.

Look up some poses of people doing back stretches/twists. Yoga or something.
